Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' opens to a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes

What do they like? Anytime I see people post their videos it's always about stuff they don't like or hated.
Mike tends to like movies where characters think logically through problems. He gets miffed when they don't think of things he does and gets hung up on stuff like that.

Jay likes weirdo violent pervert movies.

They both tend to be apathetic/ambivalent towards big budget tentpoles movies.

I watch it yesterday. It was a good movie. Just suffer from what all movies I think suffer now days. Just to long, cut out bout 20mins of the fluff in some of the beginning. Could had been amazing.

Saw it yesterday

Good movie, but not great imo.

It's hard to classify it as horror, cause its not scary at all. But I wouldnt consider it an action flick either. Its "fun horror", I guess.

The atmosphere and soundtrack were excellent. That musical scene in particular was amazing.

The movie is built in a strange way, tho. There's way too much world and character building in the 1/2nd acts, but it doesnt seem to do much with them. 3rd act was fun, but it was way too rushed.

Its definitely better than your average movie, but seems like its very overrated, imo

Just saw this today, and I really liked it a lot! I literally knew nothing about this movie before I watched it. Imagine my surprise when the movie suddenly turned into a fuckin vampire movie! What the hell?? 😂 I'm sure most people going into the movie already knew that, but I had no idea.

Anyway, awesome movie. Not at all what I expected, but I really enjoyed it. The cinematography was great, too.

That second trailer unfortunately spoiled it. I would have loved to see this completely blind.

That's awesome you went into it not knowing that aspect. Getting that reveal must have been a great moment.

I'm glad I was pretty unplugged. I did not see that coming at all! Really cool idea and setting for that kind of movie. I really loved the scenes where the vampires are just talking at the door, and trying to convince them to let them in. They're just chatting like normal people. Reminded me of how I played a vampire D&D game with some friends one time, and how most of us just spoke like average people, not like you'd usually imagine a "vampire" would lol.

Good movie but I couldn't help but compare it to From Dusk Til Dawn in both the structure (deadly serious non-vampire drama turns into campy vampire movie 2/3rds of the way through) and the subject matter of the third act (vampires, obviously). And ultimately, I'd rather watch FDTD again than Sinners because the Tarantino-esque escapades are far more interesting to me than the first half of Sinners.

Sinners had some good laughs, though. Dude with the Biggie voice had that married chick singing her ass off after she got eaten out lmao. And when the strippers showed up to twerk... holy shit I laughed so hard

??? They both praised it.

Saw it last night.

I enjoyed it and i would recommend it if u´re into terror/vampires movies but its not an amazing movie by any strech of imagination.

1st & 2nd act drag a bit to be honest although there is some tension from time to time but the 3rd act is really solid and really takes the movie home in the right way.

1st post credit scene is also pretty great. 2nd is just there...

All cast was pretty great , specially Michael B. Jordan and Miles Caton(sammie).

The 2 big musical scenes were good specially the irish one.

oh and Hailee Steinfeld is just dropdead gorgeus...

Hailee's maternal grandfather was Filipino/black. Had no idea. I thought her heritage was JUST white and Asian. But it mirrors the movie character, a bit.

Curious if that throw-away line was added due to her specific distant heritage, if she was cast because it sorta fit, or if it was just a coincidence.

Probably a coincidence. Her character, from what I've read, is a quarter black and she was raised in the black parts of the Mississippi Delta... But she's white passing which is why she makes some of the decisions she makes. She forgot the fear she should have had.

I liked Mickey 17 more than this. Sinners is all concept with poor execution. At least Mickey 17 has some consistency. 🤷‍♂️
Funnily enough I think Mickey 17 is a flip complaints wise, where as most people think Sinners starts slow but the third act saves it, I thought Mickey 17 started strong but the third act sucked.

NotMyProblemAnymoreCunt NotMyProblemAnymoreCunt John Marston John Marston you guys should go see this movie, especially if you don't already know the "twist". After sitting with it for a day, I definitely really liked this movie.

Loved the movie, saw it in true IMAX and then again in a regular theater.

A lot of little problems throughout, especially in the second half of the movie, but the the first half the movie setting everything up was great. The set-up kept me hooked and I was really invested in wanting to know where the story was going. The production values are insane throughout. There is great sets, costumes, acting, music, dialogue, etc... Everything feels on another level to most movies out there. I had some issues with the story once the conflict started but everything else obscures those issues for the most part.

I inadvertently read about it being horror and having vampires so that was a big negative in the experience (would have preferred to go in blind), but I can't fault the movie for having the twist of being a vampire movie spoiled. The biggest problem was that it had way too many endings.
There was a perfect moment to end the film where two main characters are sort of embracing after having killed off the vampires. Nothing more needed to be said or shown. But then we get a church scene, a KKK shootout, and a decades-later encounter.
So we basically get three endings after the first one. They aren't necessarily bad and there is some payoff in each of them, but instead of ending on a high note the movie starts to overstay its welcome.

EDIT: Just googled and apparently there is a post-credit scene I missed. I go to the movies by myself 90% of the times but both these times I didn't. I like to stay behind even when I know there isn't a post-credits scene but out of deference I left during the regular credits both times. Ugh, guess I can look for it on Youtube later.

As long as you saw the ending with Sammy at the bar, you didn't miss much.

Just a 30 second clip of Sammy playing guitar in the church.

Went to see it on 70mm in BFI IMAX. Projector broke down on the scene where the three musicians sit outside the barn. We finished the film on digital. 70mm definitely is much higher resolution, and crucially, handles shadows way better than digital. That said, I was surprised that for all the 70mm hype, vast majority of the film was in Cinemascope ratio.

Fun film, especially since I knew nothing about it at all going in.

This film is doing insane numbers domestically. To the point where it has overtaken Thunderbolts worldwide.

Worldwide gross:

Thunderbolts: 286 million
Sinners: 303 million

not surrpised. The movie is very good, and it has the cat lady vampire fandom in floods for an irish vampire lad.

Saw this yesterday in IMAX. Hype does not match what I watched at all. Has serious pacing issues and I found the dialogue/script to be pretty bad. Way too much unnecessary exposition. Visually it's a gorgeous looking film. Especially in IMAX. Really enjoyed the soundtrack too. Aside from that though, nothing about this movie worked for me.

Watched it yesterday. When the first trailer came out, it looked amazing, and from the second i've seen it, it was the movie i wanted to see most. Now that i've seen it, it was very disappointing, and no what i hoped it'd be. I don't know why but i thought/hoped it would be more of a movie with interesting dialogue similar to Tatantino's stuff, where it's interesting to just see actors talk about random shit, but intead it was pretty darn shallow and forgettable.

Warfare, tho, now that was some good shit.

That film needs to be talked about more, for sure.

And since i am new here and have no idea what was popular on gaf in 2024, everyone who hasn't seen it should watch The Substance. Best movie last year 100%

The Substance was my pick for the best film of last year—a storytelling experience so powerful, it reignited my passion for cinema.

Funny enough, some people are having a similar experience with Sinners.

Just finished this, by far the best film of the year so far, I managed to go in blind and avoid all spoilers so as you can imagine watching it had made up my made up my mind how this flick was going to evolve only to be surprised how it all turned out and boy did I love every single minute of it, Michael B Jordan is quite simply one of the best actors in Hollywood, hell the entire cast where brilliant, I especially loved the wee bit of Irish folk and southern blues fusion, Ryan Coogler just made an incredible movie that just fuses so many genres and styles so perfectly that I fail to see how anyone could have a negative thing to say about it

I'd classify it as a "From Dusk till Dawn-like"

Same pacing where the 1st/2nd Act is world/character building and then the 3rd act is batshit crazy action.

Solid 8/10 movie for me. Good but not great.

Hailee Steinfeld remains a solid 10/10 for me.

I really don't get the love for The Substance. Wasn't even in my top 5 horror movies for 2024.

What about it did you not like?

Rewatched Sinners, and it is indeed great and rewatchable.

It will likely receive a lot of Oscar nominations.
Tbh I don't remember all the reasons, but I really didn't care for the super over the top ending. But I did like the practical effects and acting.

Sinners was good. Simple but great film. I know it was horror/mystery too but I thought once the whole vampire bit kicks off in the final third being much weaker than the start.

Watched it last night.
I thought it had amazing "vibe". The cinematography and soundtrack were great.
Action was good.
If it didn't have the black slavery symbolism it would not be as good IMHO.
I felt the movie had the potential to be really good if they pushed more towards the horror or suspense side.
Would recommend but it's just a good not great for me

This was a really creep scene indeed. Whoever worked on the film really did their homework with Irish folklore and the vibes from it. When I stayed in a remote part of Northern Ireland, County Antrim to be exact, we were drinking in a very quiet village pub late at night and the barman was humming that tune. We were later told that it may have been a warning to fuck off, since the remote Irish really do not like the English :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Finally saw it on HBO Max... I watched the BASL version (apart from the regular version). It was really good. I understood the scene some on here didn't seem to understand... Sammie's song in the Juke Joint scene. Every scene was great. Great cast. Miles Canton was amazing! The woman doing the BASL (I've seen her before on social media) and she did great!

The mid-credit scene was cool and seeing where the survivors ended up was really good. The end credits scene was sweet. Ryan Coogler made an Oscar worthy film, IMO
