I think that for me, it was Lunar: Eternal Blue.
Lucia was dedicated to her duty of seeing the revival of the Blue Star, so she could not give up her immortality to be with Hiro like Athena/Luna did for Alex. So, even though it was a happy ending and Hiro went to be with Lucia on the Blue Star, she would still remain immortal and outlive him there. I just thought that was so sad.

Some other ones that were really sad to me were Disgaea (the bad ending), Conker's Bad Furday, Secret of Mana and Lufia 2...

What was the saddest ending to a videogame that you have played?

Final Fantasy Tactics:
Ramza risks his life throughout the game for his ideals and beliefs and to honor the Beoulve name, only to save the world and not even be remembered for it. Well, until Olan's journal was found years and years later.

Ramza was the most selfless character in any game, IMO. Anybody who can kill their half brothers and not be psychologically changed afterwards is respectable.

Ew, like, get your emotions and shit off the games forum.

I'm too manly man to cry or anything, but the ending to Metal Gear Solid 3 was really sad!

Also,
in b4 Mejilan says he cried at the end of Wind Waker

Hell, i cried too. I sat there thinking to myself, "that's it?!?! you've gotta be f'ing kidding me?!?! The art direction aside LoZ:WW had so much potential to be a great great game, it fell way short IMO because of it's length and difficulty level.

Back on topic though, FFX wasn't so much sad as it was tragic i thought.

After all Yuna went through, to have Tidus dissappear once she finally found happiness is the definition of tragedy i think.

Of course,

FFX-2 spoiler
As much general hate as there is for this game, getting the "good" Tidus endings easily made it worth the price of admission and time spent imo. Of course then they have to throw in another open ended ending suggesting that Tidus could dissappear again.....

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Seeing Azel searching for Edge at the end was so sad cause you know hes not coming back.

I'm not easily swayed by entertainment, but the Silent Hill 2 ending I got had me kinda misty-eyed.

It's the one where it's strongly implied, but not shown, that James carries Mary's dead body to the car and runs them both into the lake. There was a cut in all the trailers of James carrying someone's shadowed body...I'm assuming that was part of this ending, but back then it was said Sony wouldn't allow graphic suicide, but games like XIII have people shooting themselves in the face and stuff so I dunno.

In Eternal Blue, I thought it was more sad
to see the old and long gone Luna
.

As for endings

FFIX -
Realizing VIVI is dead on the second viewing of the ending = :(.

FFX -
They did a really good job on Yuna's expressions in that final moment on the airship.

I felt the 100% ending was a little more upbeat than some other fans do. It does introduce the possibility of Tidus disappearing again, yes... but listening to his dialogue, it also seems to be implying that as long as Yuna's feelings for him remain strong, that'll be enough to keep him 'real', which I thought was pretty damn romantic. :)

Actually, most of the FF games have pulled the "tragedy" approach in some way during the ending:
FFVI - Shadow
FFVII - The last glimpse of Aeris to remind the player that it was her sacrifice that ultimately saved the world was pretty disheartening the first time around
FFVIII - Suggesting that Squall dies, right up until the last scene, was very sad

FFVI and FFVIII though both of those characters reappear so while technically it's sad for the moment it doesn't actually end that way. Some of these other instances leave you with a "man that sucks" feeling lol.

The only thing i found sad in MGS3 was all the attempts i made trying to shoot those GD frogs from the motorcycle #$%^&*.
I was actually glad when Eva took the shrapnel after the hell she put me through
. The ending of MGS3 falls into that tragic category for me as well, but you should have been prepared for it.
Knowing Snake/Big Boss' fate through the previous games i'm not sure how anyone could have expected the happily ever after ending heh
. The only scene in any MGS i thought could have been sad was in MGS2 when
Emma died
. It had potential to be sad but man take about your overacted/dramatized scene.

Wind Waker wasn't really a 'sad' ending by definition, but you have to admit it definitely had a unique feel to it, one different from all other Zeldas before it. Definitely more of a depressing finale than a "Hero saves the day again!" type deal.

Majora's Mask.
The Deku Butler crying after finding his lost son turned into a life-less tree. Or Link still not finding fricking Navi after returning to Hyrule.

KoTOR II...
Could have been sooooo good... but I had to fight flying light sabers as the final boss... just plain sad! ...oh I think you mean the other kind of sad..my bad

Suikoden II
I actually don't like the "real" ending; I think it's just too Scooby-Doo and not all that believable. I much prefer the one where Jowy dies and you become the head of a new nation -- it's a much more powerful statement, the idea that nothing ever really changes despite all your efforts. Or maybe I'm overthinking it.

God I'm racking my brain trying to think of a game that I finished with a legitimately sad ending...

ToS was semi-sad, especially with what happens to Mithos.

One game I can remember that I actually cried at the ending was Golden Sun book 2. But that was out of happiness or something. It really got to me. *sniff*

There's no reason why Jowy would have died. In the final dungeon the last guy you meet explains that Jowy and his wife have fled the castle. It's very realistic that Jowy would've survived and lived in hiding the rest of his life.

The bad ending of Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber. And then the "Chaos Frame 0" score I got just added insult to injury.

Ultima Online.

true.

The ending to Thief:Deadly Shadows wasn't sad in itself but the fact it was perfect and reflected back to the previous games and that this was definately the end of the series made it so.

Tales of Rebirth
Agarte (after turning good after being a villain for half the game, as it turns out she was only being manipulated by her chancellor) dies, and Milhaust confesses his love for her.

Did you do the part where you go back to that mountain near Kyaro and meet Jowy again? If you go there, Jowy will fight a duel with you. If you have all 108 stars, all you have to do is block until Leknaat comes in. Otherwise you kill his ass.

God that was a such a crappy ending :P
So Agarte finally does something decent and then she dies and they make sad faces and the credits roll. Ughh, battle system was great but otherwise I really hated that game

Hmm, I did the 108 stars on the mountain thing the first time. So I just assumed the 'bad' non-108 star ending was no-mountain scene. Hmm...I think I'll forget what you just told me and keep on believing that the non-108 ending has no mountain :P

This is the ending what I was talking about.
You get all 108 stars, meet up on the mountain, kill off Jowy (not "on purpose", of course), and then you sort of become the Nelson Mandela of your time. I didn't check any FAQs about endings, so I thought this was the "real" ending for quite a long time.

I'm sorry, but the hero isn't going to give up all that stuff he's fought for just to live with his best bud in the woods. I thought it made the story a great deal less powerful and more FF-like.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out gets me all the time.

When Mike tells me I am the best, and to keep at it. Well if I dont just reach for the kleenex right then and there.... :D

Terranigma, fucking case closed.

Just to find out you're going to cease to exist after doing so much work is just so horrible. COME ON I created and then saved the Universe for godsake!

just awesome end, that i never expected at this time. really good sci-fi story.

Whoa, another person who played Dreamweb. Absolutely fantastic RPG.

As for other sad endings:

- that Zelda game where everything is a dream (for GameBoy Color) not only it was sad but WTF?!? weird also. I know, Link's Awakening!

- Tracer Tong Deus Ex 1 Ending (MUSIC!!!)

- every Metroidvania (SotN, AoS, CotM, SoD). I was so sad that it had to end. Brilliant games.

- Fallout - you fucking Overseer. How could you...?

- Final Fantasy series. All the dark ones.

- Ultima 8: Pagan - intro! Talk about one bad-ass motherfucker (Guardian). I felt sorry for The Avatar.

Shadows of the Empire- that was one of the first games I can remember where your character actually died at the end.

It's Star Wars. He's still alive and kicking, for whatever it's worth (for reference, he works with you in one level of X-Wing: Alliance among other things).
