Sad Videogame Endings

Guess I'll throw in some votes...

Klonoa 1 and 2 (especially 1), MGS3, and ICO. I'd say that MGS3's ending is quite possibly my favorite ending of all time. Absolutely amazing. It is a true reward for finishing the game (not that the game wasn't already rewarding enough).

StarFox Assault had the makings of a good sad ending, but they blew their opportunities, TWICE.

Ha, that's right. They really f*cked that up. Perhaps Namco simply wasn't allowed to go that route with Nintendo-brand characters or something? I dunno, but they shouldn't have shown so much weakness after all the setup.

I don't believe I saw Disaster Report mentioned yet, a game designed around sad endings as much as Silent Hill 2 is.

totally.

the the first time i played through it and got the ending where
the main characters realize there is no escape from the island, and they hug while the building sinks into the ocean as the camera is panning out, and the credits start to roll.
WHAT THE FUCK!

though i did enjoy the 'bad endings' where you can
leave the island in the middle of the game, and leave everyone else there.
:lol

I'll bite. There was an interview with Chris Seavor (creator and voice of Conker) that mentioned that he had a different idea of an ending where
after walking out of the bar, Conker killed himself.
I hope it was okay to mention that.

Personally, I really thought it would've been a nice and bold move if they
actually killed off Peppy and Pepper. Especially Peppy, since he is pratically retired and old anyway, and I would've liked a rememberence scene too. But Nintendo seems to have a "no deaths" habit in their games. Like in Paper Mario 2 where (also spoilers) all of the bad guys live after being blown into space/zapped into oblivion.

Haha that would have been hilarious going through all the game just so that'll happen :lol

Ah, if that's where he got it from, no problem then.

I hope Namco actually decides to release that early PSX collection one day (the one that also includes Tekken and such), so I can play Klonoa 1 and see this sad ending people are talking about. I've only beaten Lunatea's Veil so far (and the first GBA game), and that had an excellent bittersweet ending.

Speaking moogle to moogle, the impact of Klonoa 1 wasn't nearly as great as most people say, but I did play K2 first. It is, however, worth seeing just to illustrate what Klonoa is in relation to all of the games thereafter.

I shake my fist at Namco for how criminally underused Klonoa is on home consoles. I'd trade in every entry of Rayman, Tak, Jak, and Ratchet for a real deal Klonoa 3 and 4.

Terranigma, fucking case closed.

Just to find out you're going to cease to exist after doing so much work is just so horrible. COME ON I created and then saved the Universe for godsake!

Yep. This is the winner.

Illusion of Gaia: Loved this game. Don't remember much about the ending, just that I thought it was sad.

Really? Wasn't
everyone, even Eric in the last scene?
I though that
the world changed into a modern day world and all the kids were back at school together.

The game was rubbish, but the ending of Unreal 2 was kind of sad.

All your chums had been killed when your spaceship gets blown up. After you kill the bad guy and blow up his ship, the final cutscene is you drifting alone in an escape pod listening to an audio message from your dead companions.

Not sure if most of you guys know this, but for most adventure gamers I know of Amber: Journeys Beyond had an incredibly sad ending (1996 PC game)

Just finished Conker. That shit was harsh. Not so much sad as... tragic. The grass isn't always greener...

In recent memory, I'd say the most sad video game ending I can think of was Final Fantasy X.

When it looks like Yuna and Tidus will finally be together, Tidus literally fades away as him and Yuna try to embrace one another. Talk about a tear jerker.

The first one that comes to mind is Final Fantasy 8

I just beat it again today and got a little teary eyed at the Laguna visiting Raines grave scene.

Having your wife die in the final battle, and then having to sacrifice yourself to save everyone, knowing that your child will now have to grow up without you would fucking suck!

After all this talk, I got somewhat curious...and found the Klonoa ending, in slideshow format, at VGMuseum.com

I've only played a little of the Klonoa games -- is there any sort of storyline continuity between them? Do the rest of the games take place in "the real world"?

My vote for one of the saddest endings goes to FFX, depending on if you wanna count the after-credit shot of Tidus rising from the depths.

Taken just as what you see till the credits, it's one of the handful of storytelling moments in a videogame that has caused true sorrow in me, and possibly the only one that has managed to make my eyes wet. Absolute, classic tragedy played out to perfection.

Ogre Battle 64, because I tried my best, spent dozens of hours, and got a shitty-ass ending that made me look like a creep anyway.

Of course, it did force me to play it again....
