Haaaaaate the character designs. Ugh ugh ugh. Might look closer to the manga, but that isn't always a good route to take with anime.

Would love to have either seen a really modern or very retro take on the visual design. This just feels cheap and lame.

I like that they included Venus' chain and Mercury's costume not having sleeves, that's definitely a plus, especially the sleeveless look for Mercury, I always liked that on her and Pluto.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
wow that artstyle looks cheap and ugly :( so disappointing, like something off of a deviantart account. A massive downgrade from both the manga and the anime. Maybe it'll look better in motion? *sigh*

Something about the way those designs look is extremely familiar...

Anyway, for comparison:

Yeah the design sensibility here is clearly a very intentional attempt to be very faithful to the original manga. Whether that will actually translate to something that works well in animated form... I guess we'll find out. Really wish they put out a trailer with this today.

I appreciate that they're sticking close to the manga but if the animation is cheap, this will collapse on them. I think that this art style can look very good with proper animation. At least they aren't trying to change the manga to appeal to a certain audience. The biweekly episodes is a deal breaker for me. I'd rather just wait until its all over. The weirdest thing out of all of this is the fact that this isn't airing on TV. niconico sucks ass.

The official site has updated. There are lots of full body artwork for the characters there too.

For those too lazy to click (or that might miss the post, or not read the now edited OP):

Designs are OK but there's something about those drawings that I don't like. The outline looks very rough. It looks as if it was drawn traditionally, scanned and left that way without too much cleaning.

After all that delay I'm glad to finally see the designs. However, they feel pretty generic and uninspired when you compare it to the original manga (even the original anime). Seems like they are just phoning it in and not trying to go above and beyond. Won't judge it till I see it animated though.

Maybe I've just been spoiled after watching Kill La Kill and it's amazing animation/art style.

I also wonder what is wrong with their breasts:

It is like their upper body just consists of breasts.

There's a padded layer that slightly form-fitting in the front, and then wraps all the way around the back.

It's deceptive, and implies boobs, regardless of actual boobage. Same with the panty shots. Most panty shots in Sailor Moon aren't panty shots, they're leotards. The base of the costume is a giant lie.

The chest padding is just drawn weird in the new art.

I was hoping for a new aesthetic. This looks like the 90s version, which makes me feel like there was a lack of inspiration and imagination or lack of desire to actually go for it and make a new Sailor Moon for a new decade.

I've never watched Sailor Moon but it's never too late to start I guess.

And this why I love the design. While simplist, it does look a lot mature than the original series.

As for the voice actors, I'm happy to see Kotono Mitsuishi returning.

In alternate universe GAF we're complaining about the new moe 2010s designs so rest assured you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

This looks to be the first time the manga has been adapted faithfully. I'm not one for purism myself, but after three entirely different iterations on the concept I'm open to something uncreative!

Gonna wait until I see the designs in motion before I judge them. As for the bi-weekly thing, I think I'll just watch the first episode and then wait for the full series/cour to be finished to dive in. I'd rather have a backlog than have the experience broken up to episodes a month.

I'm glad the design is classic.

Do we know how different this is supposed to be from the original anime/manga ? Surely they're shooting for a reimagining and the show will differ somewhat from its source material ? Or else what would be the point.

I think every other show has been that. This is translating the source material in TV form.
