Saints Row The Third |OT| Oscar Worthy Gameplay

NervousXtian

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
Picked this up from the Steam sale.. and took a break from Skyrim to test it out.

Holy shit this game is nuts. Just played through the the armory but damn.. crazy.

Never played a SR game before (though I have SR2 sitting on the PS3 waiting to play).

I asked about this earlier, but got no response - what's the deal with the partially capsized container vessel next to Magarac Island that you can see in the background of your image there.

Probably an unused scenario of some sort that didn't make the cut.

Or planned DLC.

Or just something arbitrary scenery.

Yea, I think it's just for scenery. If I remember correctly, my sister found two of those sexdolls in that one Titanic pose on that boat. A likely easter egg.

I've done nothing with my life except eat and fap
playing this with a friend and shooting is very unsatisfying. No kick to it at all, no tactic, enemies are bullet sponges.

Upgrading weapons helps a bit. Automatics never feel good, but the handguns with explosive bullets and rocket launcher feel nice.

Best sense of impact in the game I think is really crashing a plane into traffic. :p

Nothing really tactical about this game. Most missions are the equivalent of crashing someone's paintball game with a firehose. Play, pray, and spray. I adore this game, but I won't defend its glaring flaws.

Just picked this up and put about 5 hours in. IDK, it's okay, but I'm not being blown away by anything. It's a good wacky break I needed after Sleeping Dogs which is more serious in comparison, but this feels like a junk food game. Gunplay is super weak and I can already tell I'll be fed up with it later on due to the spongy nature of the enemies. I wanna say I enjoyed Saints Row 2 more in the first 5 hours. The takedown attacks are really good though.

I hate the amount of wave based gameplay though. It just gets ridiculous after a while and the shooting mechanics aren't good or fun enough to keep it exciting.

gunplay weak? huh..that's a weird complaint imo.

Gunplay is very weak until you start leveling stuff up. The base shotgun often didn't even knock people down past a foot in front of you. And even with explosive ammo dual pistols (which are by far my favorite standard weapon) I still have to deal with these brute enemies who don't react to anything. I really don't like the inclusion of these huge enemy types, period. They do nothing but make combat annoying. I think "weak" is the right word for it. Aiming controls are well enough, but shooting isn't satisfying. Both visual and audio feedback.

I AM having more fun than the first few hours though. The last mission I did, in particular, was very enjoyable and surprisingly long.

Wrapped up the main missions at around 28 hours. Almost maxed out, a few activities left, all stores and properties purchased, lots of clothes bought, vehicles customized, etc. etc. The game became more enjoyable as missions became more elaborate and the protagonist became more of a tank. Infinite explosive dual pistols and a super character made dealing with the large enemies less of an annoyance. I also ended up enjoying the wave based encounters more because of being near invincible. Me ripping enemies to shreds, Oleg flipping cars, and 2 homies with RPGs never ceases to be an entertaining mess.

BUT, I'm not sure if I can say it was a better experience than Saints Row 2. Though that game was also over the top, it was more grounded than this game's complete goofiness so the dramatic story points had more impact. I never felt anything for any of the characters in this game, and situations were just happening as self contained WaCkInEsS but not much else. It's good that this game wants to be the crazy counterpart to GTA's super serious tone, but they went overboard here. Saints Row The Third has no heart. Johnny Gat and Shaundi were very likable characters in SR2, and you really felt like the relationship between them and the protagonist was well done. In SR3 though, every big mission just felt like a self contained effort to top the previous one in zaniness. A lot of it was funny, but it's all junk food. They lost all the substance that made SR2 feel like an actual story. And killing
________Johnny Gat
off screen was TERRIBLE. Saints camaraderie was really lacking throughout because of that decision and it was a HUGE missed opportunity to add some weight to the story.

I also dislike how early main missions were just tutorials of side activities. It blew my mind when I checked the stats and I was 20 missions into a 47 mission campaign and maybe 5 of them were actually good missions. The game felt about 10 "big missions" and 15 "small missions" short. Combine that with the totally flat narrative and it's a recipe that made the game feel more like a carnival than a story of the Saints in Steelport. I really hope Saints Row 4 goes back to what made Saints Row 2 so good, and dials back on the "try hard" insanity. And it's funny that for all the crazy stuff that happens in the missions, the city itself is a BORE. What happened to pimp fights, civilian criminals, random cop chases, random fights, and all the other weird stuff from the first 2 games? The city has no character. No real day/night cycle was weak as well.

In the end, I'm left disappointed, but I don't regret playing it. Some of the missions were legitimately good fun, and I still really enjoy building up the character's stats and messing with customization. I just hope they regain the narrative cohesion and impact they lost in the transition from 2 to 3.

I just started the preliminary stuff off of the free weekend and I want to know what exactly makes everyone like this game more than GTAIV? From what I gather it goes more in the direction accommodating the way people usually play GTA - by fucking shit up. I actually never finished GTAIV and in that game mostly just did missions. My favorite open-world action game and the only one where I messed around a lot has actually been Red Faction Guerrilla. Are the action missions in this game more open-ended in terms of what you can do, like RFG or Just Cause 2? Or are they more scripted like GTAIV?

I've beaten the game on PS3, and I traded it in awhile back. Playing the free weekend on Steam, I was surprised by how well it ran on my PC. Thinking about jumping on the sale price and some DLC.

Just curious. Does the Season Pass just give you the three bonus mission packs and the Nightblade pack?

Just finished the campaign. This game is stupid, ridiculous, over the top and juvenile and I fucking love it. So much fun, this game has put a smile on my face so many times. Lots of games this gen seem to be going for a more mature direction and its so refreshing and fun to see a game just go in the other direction with balls to the wall fun. It has its problems but they are easy enough to live with.

Been wanting to play this forever, finally snagged it last night from Gamefly for $12.99 used (with online pass). Can't wait for it to show up! :D

Just beat the game last week and I completely agree with you. The game was more about just blowing things up and doing what you want than providing a real challenge.

I do think the game got a bit repetitive with the side missions and assassination attempts etc.

A sign of just how fun this game is, is that when you have all gangs after you along with stag and the police, rather than go 'aww shit' you just smile and laugh at how insane the whole thing is and start shooting and blowing shit up.

Started to play this game after having in the library for a few months. But I can't play it because of the bad performance. The game is too slow to play. Sometimes the game runs barely fine.
Any idea what's wrong?
I got a laptop, with i5 processor, geforce 540m and 6gb ram

Wow, I can't believe they STILL haven't fixed the Saints Row 3 website. I've changed my password twice now and I still can't log in. I remember I had this same problem when the character creator demo came out. What a piece of shit.

Looks like the performance for multi-GPU ATI users STILL hasn't been fixed, either. Seems that their last update regarding the issue was Julyish, nothing since.

Incompetent. I think they're just stalling for the next game.

Can someone give me the link to the Gentlemen of Steelport mod? It's suppose to make the game a whole lot better. I just bought the game from the Amazon sale and going to play it on Monday.

So I got the Gentlemen of Steelport mod now where do I install it?
Bumped again. So I tried to install it via the instructions included with the mod but the game failed to start and I didn't backup the original files so I had to reinstall the game again. Anybody want to give me a hand?

Edit: The mod version is V1.0 Beta 3.

Alright, I finally picked this up, and it ran at a steady 60fps+ on max settings UNTIL I got into a car. Then I had occasional graphics 'freezes' for a second or two (audio didn't stutter at all), but it got worse and worse as I kept driving until I finally had to just exit out to the main menu. Audio never stuttered or slowed down or anything.

I'm not using AMD, not using the x58 or whatever intel mobo they say has problems, so not sure what it is. It definitely seems related to driving but the official forums were no help. Anyone else have suggestions? I could try changing the core affinity to single but like I said, not using AMD, on an Intel i7, so didn't sound like that was the problem.

Also, a gameplay question... is there a way to customize your character physically after you're in the game? For some reason I thought you played multiple characters so I didn't spend much time customizing mine before I dove in >.>

You can go to any "Image As Designed" store and re-design them anytime for a trifling $400.

Thanks, that's perfect!

For my performance issues, it has something to do with being on Ultra actually. I'll have to see which setting specifically it is. Game is tons of fun though

i've been begging for over 5 years.
Quick question regarding saints row 3. I just the humble bundle and got done downloading it there are no voice-overs in cut scenes. I'm using headphones but don't have a problem with them in other games.

Is there a quick fix for this? I already set the voice volume to 100 in options.

Sound settings in windows is set to 24 bit (Studio Quality). Could that be an issue?

Thanks for any help.

I'm getting pretty lousy performance and I'm guessing it's due to the fact that I'm using an AMD GPU from my quick search. It's playable, it hasn't dipped below 30fps but I'm disappointed. There doesn't seem to be much that can be done about it. Have I missed something?

Nope. Volition claims they've been working with AMD to improve performance. That was over a year ago...

I assume you're playing on DX10/11 mode?

Game ran fine for me on a 7850 (though I didn't check the FPS). Crashed during a couple missions but once I switched to DX9 it fixed the problem.

It's a blast to play, but I have a few quibbles.

1. Nothing really changes. During one mission
your penthouse gets shot up but you can still access it and you're not "forced into hiding" that the storyline would have you believe. I would've liked to see buildings destroyed/upgraded (properties look the same after you buy them) and maybe have the gangs fight over your property. Aside from the zombie area and the raised bridges the endgame environment is still the same.

2. Lack of exploration. Everything is mapped out and easily accessible, which is nice, but if you decide to walk instead of flying there's really no incentive to. Not much hidden stuff on the ground. I mean, it's not like the overworld is empty (there are people and cars) but at the same time they're all generic. Heck, some of the most fun I had was being stranded in the middle of the airport and driving away in a baggage cart.

3. Even though the story is supposed to be ridiculous it still wasn't that good.
Loren died pretty early despite being Gat's killer. I never cared for Killbane and I thought the Senator would be the big bad rather than the STAG grunts Temple and Kia.

I ran it well on high settings DX 11 using

AMD Phenom II 955 Black @3.2ghz
HD 5770 1GB
8 GB Ram
Installed on 7200RPM drive

It runs like butter on Ultra now that I swapped my 5770 for a 7950 I've never had a crash or stutter.

Hmmmmm... That is not my experience at all. The framerate fluctuates wildly. 60 much of the time but with many drops as low as the 30s and often the drops are sustained for some time and some strange stuttering after playing for a while. I've read about many other AMD card users in my same situation. I don't know what the difference is but I would not characterize my experience as butter smooth.

Maybe the AMD card and Intel processor not playing nice?

I'm using Catalyst 12.10 Windows 7 64bit drivers, BTW.

ATI card doesn't play well with anything afaik. I thought it was a Crossfire thing, but I'm pretty sure ATI cards across the board run like shit with this game.

It should say "Almost Impossible" because you have to chain hits in adrenaline mode to get the score, which means the drivers have to keep driving, which they don't. Some stop after hitting you, which gets them into crashes, which blocks traffic, which stops all progress for the mission. Sometimes they even get out of their car and leave, so you have to move it out of the way yourself. Developers: Never ever, ever, EVER create a mission that completely relies on AI.

Those missions get pretty tricky but once you get the hang of it it's fun, imo. You can use the triggers and the jump button, iirc, To really launch yourself in the air to get higher combos.

Okay I learned that one, but it's still really annoying to find a good spot and then juggle yourself with cars. However, I found a mission that's much worse!

It's a snatch mission with a bunch of people to save but the deckers notoriety maxes out. Here is how it went:

1) I go to pick people up, but after (if it goes smoothly) just one pickup there are at least 3 cars of deckers and a chopper. I clear the deckers near the people I'm picking up and whistle but because there are still any deckers at all, they are busy freaking out and ducking instead of GETTING IN THE DAMN CAR.
2) I can get out of the car to kill the deckers no problem, but there reaches a point where there will always be deckers, so the people I'm picking up need to stop being chickenshit and get in the car. On one run I actually did manage to get a good pause before more deckers showed up, but despite my whistling, they were ducking NOTHING for like 20-30 seconds and got in just before more deckers arrived.
3) If I am out fighting deckers they won't get in the car, yet if I just try to stay in the car so maybe the guys will get in, SOME decker will manage to carjack me. While they are running up to do that, they don't do animations for being shot, they just plow through.
4) I could do what I normally do when I get a mass of enemies and blow up the cars, but then the guys I'm picking up would get hurt.
5) I try this anyway, and by time they recover there are more deckers and it has all started over again.
6) I try various clever methods and I can get further in the level, but you have to pick so many people that things get bad and specialists show up. So add brutes, shock hammers, and flamethrowers into the mix and it's waaaay worse.
7) If this were it, I may have actually kept at it and seen if I could eventually save enough people, but with the time limit and no ability to call backup homies, I was convinced it is impossible.

So yeah, I used that bonus thing to 100% complete that hood. No regrets since I got 100% on the other hoods without it. I'm glad they included such a thing. Now all that is left is collectables, saintsbook missions, and the rest of the story missions. Aside from these complaints (which are just two missions) I must say the controls on this with the 360 controller are fantastic. The driving is perfect for this kind of game and the 3rd person aiming/movement is some of the best I've ever played.

GamerSoul

Yea it does take a bit of luck to find a good spot, but once you get the hang of the weird "flight" controls it's possible. For the Snatch mission, it can get a bit chaotic but I had the most success when trying to stay in the car and calling them over. You have to keep moving so you won't get car-jacked, iirc been awhile since I played the actual missions lol and I'm actually trying some now. They usually give you more people than you actually need so there's room for error.

Edit: I just did a hard snatch mission now, beat it on my second try. I was lucky because I jumped out of my burning car and quickly hopped into another one with two of them with me. lol

I also agree about the controls for the 360, it plays great and driving feels good. After play the second one, I'm really surprised they didn't add racing missions in this one too. Either way, it's one of my most favorite games this gen.

Just finished this myself (360, agreed on the fantastic controls), didn't realize I had played it for nearly 3 weeks and 40 hours already. Absolutely loved the game from start to finish, it was a blast. The game knows it's a game and fucking runs with it, with so many absurd and crazy things I was smiling so often. I just wish there was more Zimos in the campaign, him and the Boss conversing was already great.

Ended up 100%'ing (1300/1300) it, doing all the side missions, territories, assassinations, thefts, and challenges. Some of the challenges were a bit grindy but not bad, and the only only side mission I had real trouble with was the Hard Trail Blazing (atv version) on the Luchadores island. Fucking impossible, so I used the Takeover bonus on that area. I enjoyed the dlc more than I expected from the reception I'd read, they all were short but fun.

Here's hoping Volition makes it out alive to properly release Saints Row 4. Such a fantastic series.

For Insurance fraud just go to a freeway, don't worry about the bonus areas. For Snatch missions, you can use a Bear. Just drive to the mission start and get out and leave it near there, then grab it and shoot up fools. I think you can use the phone to get a gang wanted removal too during the mission.

I definitely can relate to your experience, even with the hard trail blazing. Still haven't played the DLC though :/. I'm probably going to get the Full Package edition soon since my copy is in such a bad shape anyways. And same, hopefully Volition is getting all the resources it needs to really build on this game. The potential can be seen from a mile away. I wouldn't mind those super powers we could've gotten in the Enter the Dominatrix. Hell, it would even be a cool reward for reaching the Max level.

wow, why didn't I think of using a Bear? heh. And the gang/police wanted removal really does come in handy for those pesky high wanted level missions.

Can someone give me some help in fixing this damn game?

A few months back SR3 started crashing out of the blue when I tried to load a save game, start a new game or play whored mode (I did not try the other modes), I had been able to play the game fine for 6 months before hand.

I get no error what so ever.

Now today I go and install it on my brother's PC as I had got him a copy as a gift for X mas.

On his PC it crashes at start up before ever even showing the starting logos (also no error).
I have tried every fix I could find for both our problems, but none work.

Has anyone had the errors I have had?
This is driving me fucking crazy!

This is a fabulous game. Toss-up with Dragon's Dogma for my most enjoyable title this year.

I found GTA4 miserable to get halfway finished with. Kudos to Volition for the difficulty settings and cheats.

Not sure why I took so long to getting around to playing this, but I've enjoyed it so far. Suitably over the top, yet fantastically funny too. Car ride with a Sublime 'What I Got' sing-a-long? Yes please!
