Saints Row The Third |OT| Oscar Worthy Gameplay

So for the most part, the main story (the only story, I guess) in this game is just regular open world sidemission type stuff with some funny cut scenes that are not very well directed?
Or are there more interesting missions like the deckers.die one?

Don't get me wrong, the character customization is awesome, the goofy hijinks you can randomly partake in (outside of missions) are occasionally neat, but so far I'm a little underwhelmed and very surprised at all of the GOTY talk (from what I've played thus far).

I'm in the UK, I have the game on Steam and I have a Season Pass.

Will I be able to download the DLC when I get home?

If other people have more important questions, ignore this one. I'll find out in 2 hours.
I'm in the same situation (bought it on sale from THQ.co.uk) and the game is updating right now on Steam. No changelog posted in the Steam news feed yet but I guess this is the DLC.

I'm super disappointed in Genkibowl so far. It's just activities, and two of them are just new variants on Super Ethical Reality Climax and Escort.

Only one cutscene so far, too. Maybe it'll end with something cool?

I'm not sure this game can be appreciated as well when you go into it affected by the hype that those of us love it spread around. It very much either hits you or it doesn't, and if you're expecting the kinds of things you usually associate with brilliance, you're likely to be disappointed.

This game basically came out of left field for me, and aside from the middle part where the missions are filled up with activity tutorials, it surprised me time and time again. If you're not like me and into doing wacky physics sandbox stuff while blowing shit up for hours, 75% of the game is going to seem pretty lame to you.

I'm fully behind most of the criticisms of this game, but it just clicks with me, and I love it.

Ah, also the boss in the deckers.die mission is glitched for me and I can't continue the game because he just disappears and never comes back.. :/

edit:
Uh, goofy-random question, but I played the hell out of the Saints Row 2 demo (it's all you need from the game really) and remembered that you could drink and do drugs. Can you not do that in SR3?

PC Patch:

- Added in Genkibowl VII DLC Pack
- Added in CheapyD Homie.
- Added in Team Fortress 2 over-sized masks.

For all new DLC, you need to have made it past the assault on the armory (“We’re Going to Need Guns”) and have unlocked “Shaundi’s ex-boyfriend’s apartment” crib.

General Fixes

- Performance improvement for the “High” ambient occlusion display option.
- Fixed an issue where some of the quick-time event keys could cover up some subtitles.
- Fixed an issue where the player vehicle could become “grainy” when at high speeds.
- Applied a fix for the “Love/Hate Relationship” achievement which may have not unlocked after performing 50 taunts/compliments of gang members.

Co-Op Specific

- Fixed an issue where Notoriety would fail to drop in a store owned by the host when both players entered the store in co-op.
- Fixed an issue where the host player could lose the ability to call in vehicle deliveries if the player connecting did not have the specific homie.
- Fixed an issue where some cutscenes could not be skipped properly in co-op.
- LAN games are now able to be played without an internet connection.

Do you mean System link? Because you can't do Co-op on the same xbox..

Yea I found that out after installing the game. Oh well. Lack of real local co-op on a bunch of 360 games is really disappointing.

So instead I decided to at least play the game for a few hours. Is the game really short? Because at 2 hours played I'm already at 25% completed. Liking most of what I've played so far, I'll be picking the game up next time I see it on sale.

Pretty much. It seems to me the people that get turned off by SR3 being so over the top are mostly people who took the first two games way too seriously. IMO the Saints Row franchise clearly started off as a another wannabe gangsta GTA game, and didn't really find it's voice until SR3.

SR2 gave us great cutscenes and dialogue moments that fleshed out the story and characters at a good pace while you were playing it. My motivation for playing the game was to move the story along. Cutscene direction in SR3 is poor in comparison, and I think that's why some of us are left cold-not because we "took the game too seriously". 3 plays leagues better than 2, but without the fun story I really can't be arsed to play it.

I agree with all of this.

For those asking about time frames for release, we don't handle those, it's all on Microsoft, Sony, and Steam. Normally, Microsoft is early in the morning, around 2AM PST, Steam is around 10AM PST, and Sony is a few hours after that. We play the same waiting game as all of you and just try to keep everyone updated as the various launches occur throughout the day.

Lyphen - Thanks for posting my patch notes about the PC version. The patch should be live now (or going through the servers as we speak). I assume the actual DLC on the store will follow it very shortly.

Just bought the Season Pass and am downloading Genki right now.
I initially didn't plan on getting the pass and didn't really care about the Genki pack. Also, there is the possibility that future packs could suck.
But after 1000/1000 the game over the weekend and doing everything in it, I need more. I'll still probably buy a GOTY edition if one comes out, because I like owning the dlc, but I'll go ahead and grab the packs now I suppose (not any BS weapon or costume stuff though, that shoulda been in the Season Pass).

I was afraid of the Genki DLC being all activities, so I guess I'm not disappointed because of the low standards.

I just want races. What's so hard about programing in a GPS location and scripting in a timer and finish line? :( Can't makeshift it very easily in co-op because GPS doesn't sync, even when in the same vehicle (which sucked for missions where I planned on being a co-pilot and gunner).

After playing a lot of SR3, I fired up Saint's Row 2 just to compare them. I hadn't played SR2 since it came out, and in my mind the games were pretty similar. Man was I ever wrong. SR2 looks like total garbage now with vacant streets and some real fugly character designs. The car handling is terrible too... but the story and characters are better overall, and there's some real impact to the shooting in SR2 that feels lacking in the Third. It could be the lack of Gat, but I feel like the new Saint's Row lost something at its core when it went in this wacky direction. I wish they had kept the main story at least somewhat grounded in reality. In particular, I found all the Zemos missions with the sex slave stuff really distasteful.

I think the worst of it was that misson where you had to 'rescue' the women locked in cargo containers then you had to decide whether to make them work for you in your brothels or deliver them back to the gang you just stole them from for a reward.

Then after the misson you hear on the radio how shit and piss where coming out of the containers while you were flying them over the city.

Delightful.

The worst part about that mission was that they did the "sex toy in the container" gag like... 4 or 5 times. Having it one container? That's a little funny, but in like all of them (aside from the one's with ho's) was just lazy.

I beat SR3 last week and a good portion of the activities. I'm just not interested in the remaining activities and saw that Amazon is offering $37 of credit to trade in the PS3 version, so I am going to trade it in. It was totally worth the time I put into it to beat the campaign and activities that were fun though.

I'm fine with the DLCs being a dozen or so instances of 3-5 new activities as long as the activities are unique, creative, and fun.

no sore attitude at all. but once the upgrades are made and items are found...i lost interest.

only thing i wish was more area to explore. the map feels small when youre in a VTOL flying around.

I am only like 15 hours in and the world does feel small, especially compared to GTA San Andreas. Also, the separate islands don't feel very unique aside from the middle one having the majority of skyscrapers.

In Saints Row 2 there was a poop-spraying minigame. Just saying.

WRONG. That was the best part, thanks to the character's reactions.
Nah. It was basically the protagonist saying "Whoa.. I don't even want to know" or "Whoa.. what goes on here?" Actually I feel like a lot of gags in this game are showing or hinting at something odd and sexual and then the characters going "Whoa.. that's weird".

I'm 20 hours in and I don't even know what the difference is between the areas. Middle city is skyscraper city district in the middle, upper left is power plant, upper right is airport, rest is all just a blur of housing and commercial buildings and some refinery islands between. Definitely could have used something to make each island a bit more individual.

If you have questions about the new Genkibowl DLC, I'll try to answer them.

Here's our new trailer from this morning to give you more of a taste than the small teaser from last week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fpeh-fFChs

It's available on 360 right now (We just made an adjustment that fixed the issue from the poster above), and it'll be hitting Steam and PSN within the next bunch of hours. Hopefully OnLive as well.

Enjoy!

I have the Season pass, on Steam. I see the Genki DLC in the store, I've received the CheapyD patch. Is there some extra step that must be taken?

Yeah... Is the DLC on the disc? I'm playing on PS3 and the download was suspiciously small. Just curios.

The thing I'm a bit disappointed in (so far) is the lack of missions of the same calibre as the intro. The intro mission had some pretty good humor, great 'oscar worthy gameplay' (I went 'holy shit' quite a few times!) and was just fun all around. It had quite some length too.

I just finished the ho boat mission and that almost felt like an activity. Although now
STAG
is coming into play so hopefully it'll get more interesting now.

Genkibowl VII was all off-disc content. We did release an early compatibility patch a week or two ago on PS3 though, which made the final download of the pack much lighter than if it had been a single download. That way, even if your co-op partner doesn't have the DLC, you can still play together.

I have the season pass, and Steam tells me I already own the DLC, but it's not available in the mission list. Is it, like, a new area or something?

Oh, as an aside, I just remembered that, even though I unlocked the VTOL Homie, it's also not available in my cell phone. Anyone got any ideas as to why?

DLC bought, will download tonight.

Anyway, where the impressions at, yo??? I was hoping the thread would be full of impressions/DLC chatter. :(

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarity!

So I finished Genkibowl. I got all the achievements, which was a fucking nightmare, but even disregarding how stupid the achievements were I'm disappointed.

All these activities are just variants on existing ones. Apocalypse Genki is just a new environment for Super Ethical Reality Climax, PR Opportunity is just Escort, and Yarngasm is Mayhem but with terrible controls. Skyblazing is the most unique one, but even it takes elements from the regular Trailblazing and just transports it all to the sky.

Also, out of the two cutscenes you get, neither of them has your character's voice. There are some pretty funny lines in the end cutscene, but it's ruined since you're speaking through a voice modulator and it doesn't actually sound like my guy.

Well, it didn't take long to finish Genkibowl with all 10 trophies.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ended up being the most challenging one, since I kept being unintentionally fired from cannons when I tried to kill a mascot near one.
I wish they had at least included hard versions of each activity instead of just easy and medium ones.
Oh well, now I can go back to the real DLC .... finding as many ways to kill CheapyD as possible.
I think I'll start by throwing a satchel charge onto his bald head.

My guess is that they couldn't justify the cost/time constraints of bringing in all the voice actors in again to record the lines and get this thing out. I was actually surprised they actually let the main character talk at all to be honest!

I enjoyed this dlc. I love me some SRC and I thought the ball of yarn was different enough to be enjoyable. You're a gigantic ball of yarn dammit! Sad Panda Skyblazing is the best mission set though. I'm having a blast with it. The highlight of this dlc for me is the great commentary that happens while you're on the missions. Great stuff.

On the downside, I didn't really like the escort missions. There wasn't the constant hilarious commentary (which I understand based on the mission design), and quite honestly, I just really didn't find it funny or really all that fun. Car is amusing though and having Genki chilling in the back seat made me smile.

You do get a lot of Homies and new vehicles though. I'm going to start a new character soon, so I think I'll enjoy this part.

I would recommend a purchase, but it's a hard sell at $7. $5 would have been a better price point in my opinion. I would recommend people wait for the eventual sale unless you're a SR3 fan in which case you quite possibly bought the season's pass (which I did).

Fake edit: As I was typing this, I played the escort mission again to make sure there wasn't constant commentary. There isn't. However, the Lone Ranger music was playing while I was driving around frying people for the achievement and that made me crack up.
