Samsung Galaxy S III (new flagship Android phone from Samsung)

What are the major differences (if any) between the S3 and the Evo LTE 4G?

Touchwiz versus Sense (minor differences). Evo has a dedicated camera button and a fantastic screen. IMO its better than the GS3 screen. Jesus its gorgeous. You know that tech everyone is raving about that the iPhone 5 has where the icons appear to float on the screen? The EVOLTE has that same laminated screen tech. Its bright and vivid too, no pentile.

Look:

Now of course thats a screen under a microscope (literally) and the S3 does have a better screen by far than the nexus, but you can see the differences in the whites and how crisp it is. Its great. Honestly it a tough choice between the EVO-LTE and the S3. The Evo adds a Micro SD slot and a larger battery which takes away the S3's benefits over the OneX, And the Evo has a better feel and build quality too. Especially if you can find the white one:

On the flipside, the Galaxy S3 is rolling out Jellybean as we speak to like, all of its devices released in the last 14-15 months or so. I have no clue when HTC is set to push Jellybean to their devices.

hey now, at least HTC is on the road to Jellybean, people are still waiting on ICS updates from LG!

oh, and while the EVO LTE does have a larger battery than the One X, it's still not removable.

Yep, you go into the app or widget's settings and you'll find the options there. A couple of examples: -

Weather widget - You might use a clock widget that also displays the weather, or a weather forecast widget. This will update at a set interval and you can change how often this happens, which will usually include a "manual" option where you have to tap a refresh button to force an update.

Flipboard - Again, you have options for setting the update frequency including a manual option. On the widget itself is a little refresh button that you can tap to pull in the latest data. There is also a "read later" option in Flipboard, so you can cache articles to read where you have no connection - also useful for saving mobile data.

If you wanna get really crazy with it, you can use an app called Tasker, which allows you to automate tasks. If you Google it, you'll get an idea of the things you can do with it, but for instance, you could set it to automatically change Flipboard's update frequency to every hour when you're connected to Wi-Fi, but set it to manual when you're not - things like that.

Also, if you check my edit to my last post, you'll see that I mentioned the Data Usage feature, so once you have the phone set up how you like you can monitor things to see how much data is being used, then make adjustments as necessary if you find that you're using too much. When I got my first Android phone I filled the screens with all kinds of widgets, all set to pull in data every 15 minutes - not a good idea for either battery life nor data usage, lol.

Thanks Surly! All my questions answered and more! Tasker is exactly what I was looking for, and the "data disable when reaching a set cap" is also what I was looking for, but did not know how to ask.

I thought Apple's key to that was to have the display fused to the glass?

http://www.stuff-review.com/tag/htc-one-x/

The HTC One X’s screen is optically laminated to the glass, eliminating any gap between them

The EVO LTE is the One X with a slightly different shell, it uses the same screen lamination. We were all sort of going nuts about this earlier this year when HTC dropped the One X, but it got sort of drowned out by the Galaxy S3 hype. But HTC really did deliver an amazing phone with a brilliant screen.

hey now, at least HTC is on the road to Jellybean, people are still waiting on ICS updates from LG!

OOOoooo I forgot about that. Yeah no removable battery on the EVO-LTE. And it might have less accessory support from third parties. The S3 is uniform in shape and size worldwide, third party accessory makers can design one case or dock, and have the entire worlds worth of S3 owners to sell too. The EVO LTE doesnt share the exact same dimensions with the OneX fragmenting the accessory market for the phone.

So, I'll be grabbing an S3 once my contract is up for renewal on Oct. 5. I planned to get the Blue version of the phone. Anyone recommend a good case for it? I seen one of amazon that looks like the old school gameboy that I kinda like.

I bought it but that case is seriously ghetto - the holes for the buttons and ports are molded quite poorly. I switched to one of the Cruzerlite cases instead.

You have a link for it? I know the gameboy one is only like two dollars but if I can use it for a case that works much better I will.

My god the Netflix Android app is atrocious. Please tell me there's an alternative to this.

Is that the one that they juuuuust pushed out and updated today?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoTGW8QMuPA&feature=player_embedded

If it sucks thats a goddamn shame. I thought it looked great in the vids.

Bro that isn't even an Android phone.

Dude,

Not an apple or android fanboy ( I own and use both) , but I find it hilarious at all of the people in the iPhone thread being wowed by LTE. Welcome to 2010.

Who the hell said anything about it being just Android except you? Not only was LTE tech live in the US in 2010, but there were phones out that used it back then also. So yeah.... his statement stands, and it makes sense. Even if Android and Apple were late to the party. The planet doesn't revolve around Google and Apple.

Yeah that's it. Only difference is that it runs at a super low framerate on my S3.

edit: cleared my applications/memory. Seems better now.

It would be really nice to have some bandwidth settings.

Not good enough IMO :( That sucks man I was hoping they would deliver on this.

LOL!

Probably talkback or driving mode.

Go through Settings, Accessibility, then Talkback and turn it off, or go through Language then through Text/Speech and turn off driving mode.

thanks I checked the notification bar and the driving mode was turned on even though I havent used it recently, must have hit it by accident.

Asked this earlier but didn't get a response and I think the question has been buried under the Apex Launcher debacle.

Anyone have a recommendation for an exercise armband for the S3?

Remember starting Today S3 owners on T-Mobile's network can download an HD version of the Avengers for free via Samsung's Media Hub.

Apparently this only works if you open a link via a QR Code, NFC or WAP push message and you're using the stock browser. Still a serious issue though IMO, because a lot of people will be using the stock browser.

And a lot of people don't associate QR codes with a malicious attack...

PSA for Samsung Galaxy owners running TouchWiz:

http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/25/3403928/samsung-touchwiz-reset-vulnerability

Samsung is finding itself in a spot of bother this morning, as a particular piece of HTML code has emerged that, when clicked, instantly resets the Galaxy S II — and potentially other Android devices running the TouchWiz UI. Posted by Pau Oliva earlier today, the code was initially thought to affect the current flagship Galaxy S III model, however multiple negative reports and our own testing have shown that it only brings up the phone's dialer, failing to execute the full reset without user intervention. The latter is really the issue here: Samsung's software changes atop stock Android are allowing the GS II to automatically dial the hard reset code, taking away a critical aspect of user control.

The Galaxy S II is the only device we're certain is affected by the problem so far, though Tweakers.net reports successfully recreating it on the Galaxy S Advance as well. We're in touch with Samsung to get a better idea of the full scale and depth of this vulnerability.

Update: we have now managed to test this on an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III and have confirmed it works on the device. Samsung tells us it's "looking into" the reports.

Best idea at this point is to DL Chrome or Firefox or Opera and not use the stock browser.

In fact, that's the best idea at any point.

So about the JellyBean update: How long does it usually take until google updates are available on all the deivces? Is it like Microsoft where you can just hope that you'll get the update or is it just a matter of days?

It depends on the device. Samsung is notoriously slow at getting out Updates even on the flagships. The fact that some people in Poland are getting 4.1.1 already is pretty astounding. Jelly Bean itself was released to developers a few months ago.

I imagine lot of android haters printing out QR codes and spreading them all over city.

But here is one way to prevent it:
http://dylanreeve.posterous.com/remote-ussd-attack

Thankfully Android allows for alternate dialers to be installed. I picked a popular one from Google Play - Dialer One - and installed it. Even with out making it the default phone dialer I have prevented the threat. A tel: URL will now prompt me for the application to use.

when Samsung updates teh S3 to JB.... are they going to just remove new Google voice search because of S-Voice?
Edit: Was wrong.

S Voice is still there, but Google Voice Search I believe is now just integrated into Google Now which is activated by holding down the Menu button, or pressing the Google Now button in the recent apps list

That's interesting... so they developed it as an interim solution until Now was released? Or they realized Now was better and most would prefer it??

Edit OH

I tried a link that used the "exploit" to dial the *#06# code but it didn't work. It was auto-placed in dialer but not auto-dialed.

Tried in both Chrome and stock browser with stock dialer.

Got it in glorious HD, Thanks.

2.65GB if anyone cares.

Can someone upload the media hub app? Sprint doesn't have it on here, can't find it in Samsung apps, and I can't download it from the store

Sadly this is only available for T-Mo customers. There will probably eventually be a workaround for this, but currently there is not.

Not sure if I'm just stupid or looking in the wrong place, but the S Voice settings cannot be accessed from anywhere but the S Voice application, I figured they would have put them in the system settings. But enabling double tap to activate S Voice makes the home button lag, so I disabled it, but then the only other way to activate it would be to either make a behavioral shortcut in Apex launcher, or select the app from a home screen or the app drawer, which would somewhat defeat the purpose.

Another annoying thing is that I can't activate Google Now from the lock screen, so I have to unlock my phone every time I want to use it. I wish it would activate and then if it needed to unlock to access a feature prompt for whatever method of unlock is being used.

I don't care about the movie, I just want access to all the entertainment!

SwiftKey and Chrome always had problems. Minor flaws when you look at SwiftKey and Firefox.

force hardware acceleration and restart the app.

devs are too slow to update shit for ics and jb, so unless something is broken by it, leave it on by default and enjoy a nice increase in framerate.
