Sandisk or Sony MS for PSP?

I'm getting a PSP in a week (Japanese value pak... 1.50? maybe), and I'm planning to get an additional memory stick for it to store media on. I do have an Iriver with 10 gigs of music, so MP3s are pretty much useless to have on it. What I'm looking for is picture storage and possibly videos. While I don't feel a need right now, I guess it will be nice to have the option to put a good movie on it for a longer trip. Is 512 MB enough to store a 2 hour movie without having to clear out a permanent set of pictures, say 50 MB? Or should I just go for the 1024 MB while I'm at it? It's pretty much twice the price.

Right now the options are Sandisk or Sony, and 512 or 1024 MB. Sony sticks are _slightly_ more expensive overall, but I can afford any of them. From some earlier threads I heard that there was some trouble with Sandisk sticks though, so should I pay extra for Sony sticks just in case?

Also, some interface questions.

* Can I have any folder structure on the stick, say PICTURES/OWN/B&W and PICTURES/OWN/COLOR, or is it a limited structure like on Iriver (only two folder levels)?

* If I format my pictures to exactly twice the PSP screen size, will they show up pixel perfect on the screen and still be zoomable, or will they be zoomed in to begin with so I have to zoom out on each one?

* Is there a quick and easy way to convert a DVD movie directly to MP4, or will I have to do a lot of ripping and resizing?

* Slightly unrelated: can I use the Pro Duo (with adapter) in my old Sony digicam which usually uses regular memory sticks? I wouldn't need to save stuff from the camera, just use it as a card reader through USB. Or must I format it on the PSP before I can use it at all?

Still need advice on this. I think I'll go for a bigger card (there's certainly stuff I could fill it up with, I just got PSP Video 9), but Sony or Sandisk?

- I would say you would be pushing, I would go with a gig

-no, Sandisk is fine

-only one folder level

-you can zoom in and move around with the analog stick

- yes many programs out there.(ipsp, pspvideo9, 3gp converter)

you need to have the correct folders so the psp with recgonize it

Ok, thanks.

"-only one folder level"

Does that mean that all pictures must be in a single folder, or that I can have one level of folders to sort them in?

If you wanna have a two hour movie and 50 MB of pics, you need to get a 1 gb mem stick. Unless you can live with really lousy image quality for the movie.

Concerning picture size...if you get a 1.50 PSP you can use Jpeg viewer, which makes it possible to adjust pictures to make them fit either vertically or horizontally. With jpeg viewer, you don't have to worry about folder levels either.

And don't pay extra for Sony mem sticks, that's pointless IMO.

No, you can have multiple folders in psp/photo. But no subfolders in those folders (ie: psp/photo/pr0nbuttsecks/xxx)

Accept no substitutes

Got damn I need to clean my screen! :lol

I've been using a SanDisk 256 MB Memory Stick Pro Duo for over a month now. I'm very much satisfied with my purchase!

In terms of performance, SanDisk's "gaming" Memory Stick Pro Duos work in the same way as the "ordinary" ones. The only real difference is that the "gaming" versions have translucent colored cases, and each capacity has a distinct color. Also, the "gaming" version doesn't include an adapter to use it with the full-size Memory Stick slot, which a lot of the other ones do.

I've noticed some of SanDisk's "ordinary" Memory Stick Duos (similar to the one in The Faceless Master's post above) now have a sticker on the package stating that it is compatible with the PSP. Compatibility was never in question--it's just there to make it easier for the less technically inclined consumer to pick out the proper memory card among the multitude of formats.
