I'm disgusted by the people defending this guy saying he has the right to ask her out of the car and so forth. Even defending the use of a tazer. When is pointing a tazer at someones face through a car window and threatening to 'light them up' a responsible way to behave? Officer of the law is a position of respect, you should act like a person worth respecting, not some low-life bully with a hard-on for power. If I were in his position, if I stopped someone and they were giving me sass or being aggressive - I would explain myself succinctly and ask why they're being so belligerent when I'm only trying to do my job. Speak softly and try not to alienate the person I'm talking to, who as far as I know - is not guilty of any crime. I'd also know that smoking is an addiction and that smokers have a reputation to be ratty about their choice of habit. Well trained people know how to speak to people. This guy wasn't using his training nor was he just trying to do his job: like so many - his actions are determined by the desire to use his state sanctioned power to bend people to his will. To make them bark on command. Do as I say, smoker, or I will get angry with you and threaten to hurt you. That isn't assertiveness, its stupidity.

Having been detained(abused) many times myself I can tell you that I would do you a disservice by not letting you see the anger and rage that this abuse has instilled in me. It is the very essence of the language of the unheard. Just like the righteous anger in Bland's voice when dealing with that officer. The fire flowing through my veins every time I have to watch someone die literally for no good reason or just have their dignity stomped upon must surely be the stuff of which riots are born. It surely overwhelms the rational mind looking for cathartic release.
I don't read comment sections after videos. I think you'll find that most sane people don't.
And how does this give insight into her as a person? She seems distressed after an auto accident. Every second of video she was ever in isn't important. What matters is what happened that night between her and the police officer and what happened the next few days in the jail.

You seem angry for what I posted. I post these things to built up more discussion for Sandra. Basically, what type of person she was before she "supposedly" killed herself. As we can see she's a caring person of others and has faith in God. If you don't like what I post on this thread then simply just ignore!
I tried really hard to stay out of this thread all day because it's gotten nasty and off-topic, and both sides are at fault. I should have trusted that instinct.

1. She believes in a god. 2. Shes happy to be alive. 3. Shes distressed but sees the positive side about it. 4. She cares about other people as shown through her empathy to the motor cycle driver.
It seems as if you're just kind of posing a questions about context to get attention. Does it really matter if it has direct context to the incident? I think having Sandra in it is enough.
It's just a video, and it does say a lot about her faith in God. Not sure what you're on about, tbh.
There is so much inconsistencies in this story.

She was depressed? The audio released showed her telling a friend she was going to sue.
The trooper was racist and the witness in the cell is white.
Whole thing is like an episode of Law and Order.

He legally has the right to ask her out of the car, also he pulled the taser not through the window but had the door wide open and pulled it after repeatedly trying to ask her out, then remove her, the taser was the last thing he pulled before she got out. I think he escalated it all too fast, should have waited for backup, and talked her out, but what you wrote is wrong.
Just because something bad can happen from doing the right thing is still no excuse to do the wrong thing.
In the end, you can't control police, you can control yourself. This started as a discussion of the Sandra Bland stop, what I was discussing this whole time is what she could have done to make this situation not end the way it did.
Are you going to argue that just because there are shit cops, you have no control over the encounter so how you, yourself, act makes zero difference on outcome?

All you social justice warriors here need to wise up. If a cop stops you for a traffic violation and tells you to get out of the car, then get out of the car. Only bad things can happen if you engage with a cop and extend the encounter time by being difficult because all you are doing is giving them more time to go fishing or giving yourself the chance to do something stupid and incriminate yourself. Cops are trained for this so just shut your mouth, get your damn ticket and ask if you are free to go.

There are two parts of this event:
1. The arrest
2. The death
Sandra refused a police officer's legal order, resisted his attempts to remove her from her car then resisted arrest. She is at fault here. Stating this is not victim blaming. She is not fully to blame here, I do believe the police officer acted too rashly and could have deescalated the situation, but nonetheless she shares a portion of the blame.
Sandra than died while in jail. She is not at fault here. Saying something like "Well if she didn't resist arrest she wouldn't be dead" would be victim blaming. Either:
A: She was murdered.
B: She committed a suicide which should have been prevented by the facility.
C: She committed a suicide which could not have been prevented by the facility.
In none of these scenarios is she to blame for her death.
When a cop gives you an order to leave your vehicle, an order that the Supreme Court has deemed is acceptable in any and all traffic stops, you leave your vehicle. That is the law. You have as much right to refuse to leave your vehicle as you do to refuse pulling over to the side of the road when a police car is following you with their sirens on: none at all.

Yes we can control the police. We just wont do it with your attitude of they are the ultimate authority and we can't do anything with them except fear for our lives like wild animals. We certainly wont do it by telling their victims you don't need to have an attitude.
That's what you seem to be arguing for with statements like "You can never control cops but you can control yourself". So yes I do think the actions of the person you cant control, will determine the outcome.

Everyone's emotions are clouding their judgement, and everything said that isn't 'fuck that cop' is victim blaming, even something like stating that she was wrong not to get out the car when he said to. They stated he violated procedures and a courtesy protocol, it was not explained specifically what he violated, hence the discussion. considering there are multiple actions that have created varying degrees of concern, some of which are clearly lawful under the law, it is a difficult to use the benching of this officer for anything other than general terms.
