Feels like maybe corporations should be beholden to all stakeholders again, and not just shareholders.

Gotta cancel insurance for the shareholder, gotta cut safety costs as a power company for the shareholder, gotta suck up all that low cost water as a giant ag company shipping alfalfa to Saudi Arabia for the shareholder...

And then everyone else gets stuck with Flint, MI water quality, $1,000 per kWh electricity in frozen Texas, and uninsured homes in Florida and California.

I don't know I have an issue with this. Can the reporter just not let them get to safety first before asking a bunch of questions? Probably a million things on your mind when you're in a raging inferno trying to rescue your animals then having a reporting stick a mic and flashlight in your face.

They'd probably be there with a mic in your face when you're legs are on fire: 'Can you describe the pain for the viewers at home? Do you have medical insurance?'

No. They had the foresight to read the room before wild fire season began analyzing the budget cuts and lack of historical preventative measures by the those in charge on a federal, state, and municipal levels.

This is a problem because capitalism ran unchecked for to long, not DEI hires or Mexican illegal "aliens". Will become much worse for you guys with the new government, hell bend on turbocharging capitalism for the benefit of the rich and powerful.

The old government was at the benefit of their rich and powerful too. One thing both parties can agree on, and that's enriching themselves and their donors.

I've been going through documents because I am interested in the truth, and the gist of it is that L.A. is fucked. The city was already slowly crawling towards bankruptcy. They're trying to solve problems the city literally cannot afford. Now with this wildfire? Jesus Christ. I mean, this city is supposed to host the 2028 Olympics? With what money?

In the FY24 budget, $7.8M was allocated to cannabis regulation. In the FY25 budget, it's $8.5M. Civil rights and human equity is about $5.2M for both budgets. Cultural affairs was reduced from $20M to $18M. I'm not even that far in the rabbit hole and I already see areas to make some sweeping cuts.

That, and the federal oversight controlled burns and pruning have been either denied or not been done at all the past 4 years as well. It's like they want us to suffer.

It's something that's pretty much infested too many institutions so it's always in the back of the mind.

Same with never being 100% sure if this was an accident, deliberate or maliciously deliberate. With how insurance companies canceled policies and this happening out of season and how bad it is something those thoughts will always bug you.

As for the fires it's a shame that Eaton went up again. I went there on a field trip back in elementary and remember thinking how beautiful the area was.

California is burning due to a combination of a terrible government administration… and climate change decreasing levels of rainfall.

You can all argue your culture wars as much as you like, but that's the reality of the situation.

(Btw I am not of the opinion that DEI == GOOD, I'm just not seeing how a shortage of wildland firefighters is truly caused by any DEI shenanigans happening, for instance I doubt the fire department Carolla was applying to back in 1982 or whatever was facing a shortage at the time nor was he even applying for that kind of work as far as I can tell)

Now is it smart to do outreach to communities that aren't typically signing up to be firefighters during a shortage?

I would think so. However I also don't think the LAFD is the issue here it's a lack of wildfire firefighters who handle these massive out of control blazes. And the reason for shortages there is pretty obvious. A crazy decade of fire seasons caused many to quit / get sick or die, and lack of pay isn't exactly helping replace those folks let alone grow those squads or whatever they call them.

Considering the increasing importance hopefully this disaster has a silver lining in that we properly fund for this. Bunch of rich people losing their homes should help cause a bigger uproar.

Yeah, lack of firefighters is a problem, and a bloated bureaucracy certainly doesn't help pay for them. I can't imagine all the red tape and paperwork it takes to be a fire fighter in California.
 
Sometimes it takes me a bit of time to fully process horrible events, but its finally fully hitting me that SO many people just lost their homes and livelihood overnight, with no insurance to help them get back on their feet. Fuck I feel so horrible for them.
 
My brother-in-law texted us that the fire has now hit Monrovia and about two miles where they live. Hopefully with the power off and the worst of the winds ending later will help stymie that.

Unfortunately he's told us that some of his relatives have lost their homes and that many of places they frequented together are now gone.
 
If you think about it in an RTS sense, California is the best piece of meat on the entire map. I'm wondering, why do the people who live there let crazy people run it? Cutting a fire department budget when you live in a tinderbox... If I'm this mayor lady I'm staying abroad. Maybe this can be a wakeup call to all of Cali.
 
There are now five wildfires raging. For context, per the LA county fire chief, they only have the capacity to handle two simultaneously.
