How I Live Now, which I'm greatly anticipating, was recently picked up for US distribution by Magnolia, which is "eyeing a fall theatrical release"; meanwhile, the film has a solid UK release date of October 18th.

And since we're on a new page, here's a photo of her alongside Zachary Quinto, from the 25th Galway Film Fleadh a few weeks ago:

Woah I had no idea she was Irish. She's talented but she needs to choose better roles. She's great in everything I've seen her in but stuff like the Lovely Bones and the Host are awful movies.

Hanna is pretty good.

Wow thanks to this thread I learned how to pronounce her name. I've been calling her sowreese for the longest time, when Sear-sha as mentioned earlier is a lot easier to pronounce.

I love this thread very much. And I also love JaseC for always having avatars of her, and reminding me of her awesomeness.

An MP3 of her public interview at the aforementioned Galway Film Fleadh has been uploaded to RTE's website and runs for about 53 minutes. I haven't listened to it all yet (it's late here so I'll probably save the rest for later), but at around the 18-minute mark she confirms that she has a sex scene in HILN, and coupling that with the BBFC's classification I linked to above suggests to me that it may very well also be a nude scene.

Thanks JaseC for pointing out Saoirse (Sasha) to us.

It like Hanna and The Way Back (free on hulu btw) had a baby.

Yeah, I got a similar impression from the little I've read of the film and the stills that surfaced a little while ago. I haven't read the novel, but since there's no Aussie release date yet I should have plenty of time to get around to it.

She's my favorite young actress. Talented and cute as a button.

How I Live Now poster (can't find a higher-res version at the moment):

The poster is awful, but I couldn't care less. Straight into my veins.

Whoa, I had no idea Kevin McDonald directed One Day In September (I had to google that "academy award winning director" thing) Kinda off-topic, but you guys should watch that doc.

it was alright. The backstory was better than the modern day parts.

I agree. I liked the abrasive mother/daughter dynamic between Eleanor and Clara for the most part, and was pleasantly surprised by Gemma Arteton's performance, but the modern-day narrative just wasn't particularly interesting to me, especially in regard to the rather shallow and dull relationship between Eleanor and Frank.

My favourite scene of the film, though, is probably the conversation between Eleanor and the female teacher. Oh, and:

How I Live Now will be premiering at TIFF next month. If I was expecting this, I would have saved up for a trip ; in fact, I'd planned to go last year (it's the only public film festival that kindasorta fits around the teaching schedule of my Uni), but ultimately had to spend the money elsewhere (curse you, Christmas). Also, there's finally movement on the Mary Queen of Scots front: Susanne Bier is in talks to direct (something which I thought had already been set in stone, but apparently not), with Penelope Skinner - who also happened to write to pen the script for HILN -- and Michael Hirst assuming script duties; Working Title is aiming to begin shooting the film next year.

(Testament of Youth is as lifeless as ever -- there hasn't been a word about it since Saoirse was announced to star well over a year ago now.)

Edit: And here's a higher-res version of HILN's poster, because why not:

Bumpity-bump-bump:

- Saoirse will be attending the UK premiere of Justin and the Knights of Valour next Sunday

- She'll be featured in the video for Bat for Lashes' new tune Garden's Heart, which itself will be featured in How I Live Now

- Speaking of HILN, here's the "new" poster, which is virtually identical to the old one, and a couple of new stills, in crummy res because somebody thought it'd be a good idea to give MTV exclusivity:

- HILN's aforementioned premiere now has a concrete date of September 10th, and TIFF's own rather verbose overview is as follows:

Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) stars in this adaptation of Meg Rosoff’s award-winning near-future novel about an American teenager sent to live with her family in Britain on the eve of the Third World War, directed by Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland).

A Kevin Macdonald film puts its protagonist in peril and plunks you into the churning waters of the real world — all with bracing cinematic style. Films such as Touching the Void and The Last King of Scotland have proven how, even in very different registers, he delivers.

How I Live Now takes Macdonald into the realm of speculative fiction. Drawing on Meg Rosoff's prizewinning young-adult novel, this is the story of Daisy, a tough, blond punk (Saoirse Ronan) sent from her ultra-urban life in America to stay with distant relations in remote rural England. With her black t-shirt and eyebrow piercing she's immediately out of place, but that's the least of her worries. In this near-future, war has broken out, and as white ash falls from the skies and the military evacuates the cities, she's forced to depend on people she barely knows.

With the mesmerizing Ronan at its centre, How I Live Now soon develops into an engrossing character study set on the brink of apocalypse. As Daisy flees through dangerous territory seeking a return to safety, she reveals layer after layer, peeling back the brittle, city-girl exterior to show the complex, vulnerable young person beneath. In one disturbing scene, Macdonald shows the full extent of the war's impact, but what's most striking is how it registers on Ronan's face.

Its futuristic adventure plot and strong lead may draw comparisons with The Hunger Games. And though there are points of resemblance, this film leans much less on spectacle and more on probing deeper into the mind and soul of a girl discovering just what she's made of.

Edit: Here's a set photo from HILN:

Total Film visited the set last year and ran a few-page feature in its latest issue, which is a decent read -- it's a UK mag but you can buy the digital edition from the Google Play store for a few bucks.

Here it is. There's a bit of footage, some of it new, bookending the clip. I like BFL, but I can't say I'm particularly feeling this song.

(Now that I've posted four times consecutively, I think I'll wait until somebody else bumps the thread before posting again. ;))

I lied, but only because she was at the UK premiere of Justin and the Knights of Valour and looked amazing.

I'm glad she didn't cover up her freckles.

(I'll leave matter of bumping the thread to somebody else now, I promise. ;))

Edit: Bangladesh's post did the trick. ;) TIFF stuff in a couple of days.

Hanna is such a good movie. One of the better action movies of the past 10 years or so. Fucking love that subway scene.

Here are a couple of interviews from the event.

So The Host was good?

Hanna was much better than I thought it would be

The Host is awful. I actually think, all things considered, it's her worst film overall, including her earliest stuff. I almost regret paying to see it at the cinemas.

Edit: Byzantium is decent, though. It's available via VOD in the UK already and releases on BD this month. Saoirse is great (Gemma Arteton is surprisingly good, too), and I enjoyed the mother/daughter dynamic as well as the underlying vampire mythology of the film, which is pieced together via flashbacks, but much of the plot focuses on the relationship Eleanor (Saoirse's character) develops with a teenage school boy, which is a problem as it's rather shallow and utterly uninteresting. I'd like to see Saoirse tackle another action film one day (ditto for Joe Wright -- bonus points if the two team up again for this purpose).

The Host is bad, real bad, but she's kind of great in it. It felt like it should've been unbearable, but she made it... not good, but watchable.

In terms of storytelling, it's basically TV-movie quality. It was like having Meryl Streep in a SyFy flick.

Rumours are afoot that's she's chasing the female lead role in Episode VII:

I can reconfirm that Saoirse Ronan has had a meeting and read for one of the lead roles – to the best of my knowledge, the lead role – in Star Wars Episode VII.

This was first reported by Latino Review but, for what it’s worth, I’ve also had a rather telling, silent nod from one of my own sources near the casting of this project.

I'd like to see her in a box office success again as I think she needs something to wash away the taint left behind by The Host bombing.

I'm still waiting on David Poland to upload his new TIFF interview with her. He posted a sneak peek last week but hasn't uploaded the full interview just yet.
