Saros | Review Thread

Can i ask you a question?

I"m pretty sure that most of my damage taken in returnal was because of falling damage or getting hit trying to catch the disappearing money from enemies (such a bullshit way to make things harder btw), do you feel like soros locations have the same amoung of voids where you can fall while fighting and does itstill have the bullshit money disappearing mechanic?

I swear enemies were cute puppies compared to the amount of damage i took from falling or enviromental lasers and traps...
You can fall a lot here but not in enemy zones. Those arenas so far are fall dmg proof :D

Shit still disappears, but you have a lot of upgrades that makes it lasts much longer or you pick them up from further away

GymWolf GymWolf the above is correct.

I've only fallen off a cliff on accident twice here.

wtf... how lucky are you on your runs :D That dps seems insane
There's the modifier system where you can opt to take penalties and balance with buffs, but you can only go max of negative 3 from positives.

I put on the I don't get halycon which gives me plus 6, and did the -7 for obtaining the highest level of damage buff. It left me with 2 more points so I added the active reload window is bigger.

For my runs if the negative impact from a buff is too big I just don't pick them up. I focus on either a good rifle or cross bow.

Thats about it. Game is far easier than Returnal so far.

oh i dont use that modifier system at all, not on my first run. I will fuck with it later. Well ofc its easier when you do that kind of dmg lol

Beat the first boss on my first try.

yummy samuel l jackson GIF

I mean it's the same as the pick ups in game. Benefit or loss. I'm sacrificing halycon. My skill tree is juiced in everything else though.

Skill tree also is big reason I'm shredding.

Mind you enemies only die fast once I'm in a weapon in the high 20s just like Returnal.

I mean you deal insane amount of dmg. My ult does like 15% hp bar.

I only had 1 try on that boss, but my dmg was so ass i was never gonna beat it.
Even mine was. I had cross bow instead of heavy rifle.

I actually took most of my damage from him flinging me out of arena and not grappling back on fast enough.

Forgot to mention, I think the digital deluxe costumes are pretty "eh", but I do like the pre-order costume.

Alright maybe I overestimated my skills. I think I need to farm up a bit more before b-lining it to the second boss. Also I think since I just played some returnal it is actually to my detriment and I take damage for doing something dumb ie the timing of enemy tracer arrow rounds, dodging when I should be trying to absorb the blue dots etc. Also I think the second life thing should not have been a perma upgrade. I would be screwed more if that wasn't always on.

I'd have gave the other armors options like take off Kratos face paint or Yotei mask off. Prefer to see his beard.

This game will surely win the best game sound effects
That should be given since Returnal, but I have no experience with this yet. A bit over two hours to go here. Not that I'm counting or anything.

...buuuuut, if we're talking about TGA, Returnal wasn't even nominated that year. The winner was Forza Horizon 5. Which may have decent sound effects, but come on.

Edit: for the record, I have played FH5. The cars go "wroom", sure. It's a fun arcade racer, outside of the festival stuff and the included dialogue. But seriously. No contest.

For those already about to finish, is this one of those where you will be going back to asap? Or giving it some time on the shelf?

Shepard . First try. Epic boss. Some good music finally.
What sort of suggestions do you have for the game in general? I don't mind making it easy by completely overpowering myself - that's one of the things I love to do in roguelikes.

That's disappointing to hear.

Skill tree:
-Focus cheap upgrades. Keep going up and up because every new tier after a boss has new cheap skills again.
-Get health and proficiency.

Weapons:
-Rifle and cross bow are king.

Risk items during run I alway take:
-Lose health from fall damage, do less damage at low HP. I avoid enemies doing more if they hit you more than once, and I avoid losing currency if hit. These make a run pointless.

Modifiers:
-Give up halycon, get level 3 damage buff and reload window is larger.

Last tips:
-Parry is rarely worth risk IMO. Just jump and dodge red.
-Dodge more than shield
-If you're doing a second attempt at a run immediately change it to eclipse at start of level if available. This way you farm way more currency if you fail again but also you get better rewards so you're super buff by boss time

That's about it. For the record I never platinumed Returnal or beat dlc tower. I'm ass at rogue games in general. This game is very approachable and fun.

My biggest complaints come from some uninspired level design, weak bosses visually/forgettable, abysmal soundtrack, and so far the story is a nothing burger.

Edit: I should add that once you can teleport to maps it'll tell you how much halycon in a level you've found. So farm the easier early levels for halycon for specific nodes you want. I plan to do halycon focused runs if I get stuck but I think I'm on the final level… so lol.

Sorry to spam this again, but how's the metaprogression/upgrade carryover between runs compared to Returnal?

Housemarque said that one of the complaints for Returnal they wanted to address with Saros was the audience's perception there was a dearth of meaningful permanent upgrades. That was one of my nitpicks with Returnal, too.

There is a whole "skill" tree where you can upgrade your stats and a bunch of other stuff after every run to make you stronger

Gonna nab me a copy in a few days for sure! Then I gotta dust off the old PS5 Pro, no doubt about it 100%! Gonna be lootin', shootin', and scootin' this weekend!

Damn

I guess at this point a mod should just rename this thread to "OT" and be done with it

If this game flops commercially, I'm gonna scream!

If this game had a waifu anime character, it would be a hit in Japan. This studio's gameplay direction is somewhat at odds with it's art direction.

The mini boss with the health bar is pissing me off. His aggro is crazy and I would beat him if I had second chance but I keep losing it in the rooms that have those ridiculous stomping battery enemies. Any tips for both?

Don't get hit!

No disrespect. Just being real.

This and Returnal are heavily based on bullet-hell principles, and the whole gameplay philosophy of that sort of shooter is based on avoidance/mitigation of walls of lethal fire.

These games don't reward accuracy of aiming, they are about accuracy of positioning/movement.

Yeah I tried to make a summary with Gemini, just to see if I can pull off something quick and I got this:

Like I said - the bones. Look at my invincible vs OT I just made. No AI or gpt used. Simple and to the point.

It doesn't need to be agent 47 level of peak. Just good enough so people can discuss.

I am talking about biome 3

Yeah I figured haha. I best returnal I just didn't know if I was missing something for those particular two enemies. I beat it. For the third biome mini boss what I did was just constantly used the zip line when he did the stomp thing. The radius of the red orbs on the stomp is too much to reliably get distance on foot with dash

Man, I've fought legion three times and still haven't beaten it. First boss that's given me trouble. I got so close this last run, too!

Use the weapon you get at the start of that zone as high a level as possible. It should auto aim right to the main one. Don't worry about the ones around him. Don't bother trying to parry the red stuff they come out too much and too fast it's hard to gauge. When the huge array of red ones come out try to run far to the side and dodge when they get close. That's all I got haha

Maybe don't be a loon and stop slamming cats on the floor lol
Now there's a reference I actually get!

Returnal was one of those games that I really enjoyed even though I wasn't very successful at it! Just pure atmosphere! I will likely grab this as well. Wish it was on PC, but I guess once in a while it doesn't hurt to fire up the PS5.
