Fuminori Sakisaka is a young medical student, whose life is changed when he gets in a traffic accident which kills his parents and leaves him heavily injured. Fuminori undergoes experimental brain surgery to save his life, but the surgery has an unintended side-effect - it creates a form of agnosia, causing his senses to become "warped". He perceives the world as a hellish nightmare with a black sky and buildings covered in pulsating flesh, where all the streets and building interiors are splattered with blood, giant organs and cartilage. Ordinary people appear to him as grotesque, giant grub-like monsters with a hideous stench, and even food that he used to like now tastes utterly disgusting.

As he contemplates suicide in the hospital, Fuminori meets a beautiful, human looking girl among the flesh-covered walls. She introduces herself as Saya, and is apparently looking for her father. Fuminori does not want to be separated from Saya, and asks her to live with him. She agrees.

YES, MY COMPUTER CAN RUN THIS! I suppose I should try it out.

A very awesome experience, but one I'll never re-visit!

But i genuinely recommended it to VN newcomers because of the great writing and the short length. (clocks in to around 5 to 6 hours to finish all three endings), and the horror setting.

I really wanna jump into Visual Novels... So, this makes me wanna try it out even more.

Um, take note not all VNs are freaking disturbing like this one. Newcomers might get scared away by this game if they're not into gruesome stuff. I'd recommend 999 to newcomers instead!

I want a good horror game, damn it. :p

I tried this after that novel thread, but ugh, I don't know how to feel about it. It had an interesting story for sure, but all the sexual content and especially gore started to get to me by the end of it, and I thought I liked gore before this. May be that was the point of the game to make you feel as messed up as the main character... xP

I felt really wierd after playing this.

The H scenes were kinda arousing, then I thought about
the fact that all the girls were probably deformed and Saya was a tentacle monster
, I just felt really dirty.

Started it last night. Creepy game... my only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be a way to full screen the application without it stretching the aspect ratio out. The patch can also be a little difficult to read, due to it's lack of proper word wrapping and no hyphens.

Want to see how this will progress though, and FWIW, to the OP, I'd probably suggest a short paragraph explaining what kind of game this is (in terms of genre/style etc...) Most average gamers have probably never played, or even heard of visual novels.

I started reading this a little awhile ago when some people on irc were talking about it and with its relation to Madoka and why not.

The music is pretty great. It really emphasizes the creepy atmosphere.

Whoah, bold topic for one of my favorite visual novels.

If you can stomach the gore (it's nothing that'll remotely shake you if you've wandered into /b/ and accidentally saw something you can never take back), this is one of the finest lovecraftian modern horror stories out there. Note that there are exactly two dialogue choices, and they lead to different endings, although one of them is the "true" and obvious one, and arguably the best (wikipedia the rest afterwards to see what you missed out on). Amazing soundtrack, visuals, and atmospheric translation.

It's also pretty short. Maybe... three hours or so, depending on how fast you set the text.

Non anime fan friend: "So I just finished Saya no Uta."
Me: "Yeah? What did you think?"
Non anime fan friend: "I fuckin hate you..."

How did you get him to play it?

Was talking about it with an actual anime fan friend at dinner with a group of people and he was listening in on the conversation. He said "that sounds disturbing as fuck. I want to try it." I explained it was a VN and thus had an animesque art style as well as some sex scenes with what appears to be an underage girl, but he didn't care after hearing a synopsis.

Can't really experience it truly from just that man. The lack of the music, screams, scenes, and visuals can't really be replicated by plain text.

I mean the first few minutes are memorable! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDHJ05TbDxU
Oh don't worry, I already watched a few gameplay footage too and the goddamn fleshy noises and weird static mumbling sounds creeped me out as well. D:

I'm going to cautiously give this one a thumbs up even though I seriously can't play this for more than 10 minutes at a time

This game is pretty good. First time I've ever felt sick from a game! Worth it though.

Spoiler summary for the wikipedia lazy:

Guy wakes up in a hospital after car accident that kills his family, everything looks like a giant bloody mess, all human looks like tentacle monsters. Doctor's can't figure out what's wrong, so he hides it, contemplates suicide. One night, a young woman named "Saya" strolls wanders the hospital and looks normal.

The two bunk up and he becomes more and more withdrawn from his friends. He tries to help her and learn more about her. He finds out he has a connection with a shady hospital doctor who disappeared. It's slowly revealed that the young girl he sees isn't the what everyone else sees. She starts collecting his "seed", he eats some "fruit" that she finds and it's the first time he can truly stomach food. Turns out to be the neighbor. el oh el.

Some drama occurs with his old friends (including an old would-be girlfriend) and things turn pretty terrible. Both he and Saya start murdering people. Saya turns out to be a being from another dimension that an eccentric doctor at the hospital was researching. Depending on the ending, you're either committed to a psyche ward for life or Saya collects enough seed and blossoms into a spores that turns every human on earth into a legit tentacle monster, as it's what her species is meant to do.

Fun for everyone involved!

Here is a testimonial from the English VN thread!

I've decided to play Saya's Song after hearing all the praise of it not being a hentai game, so this will be my first visual novel. I reached the first sex scene and the writing is really good (outside of the sex scenes of course). I wish a story this good was made into an actual non-pornographic novel so it would get better recognition. A couple of thoughts so far:

1. Even with the English patch, I have to thank the developers for making the installation and menus easy to use for anyone regardless of their culture. It must take a lot of trial and error to find what works.
2. Picture this - It's midnight and I start a new game with my headphones on at high volume.
I have four choices that appear to change the brightness and other settings, like in some horror games. I choose the second option and BAM! The most fucked up noise is penetrating my ears and my face through the first conversation is like this

Welcome to Saya's Song.

Question: is the sex content optional and/or skippable?

Against my better judgement, I think I am going to try this. >_>

Has anyone read the comic based on the game?

I appreciate everyone's experience with this but I had trouble getting into this fully. I should push myself to get through it...

The sex is necessary, don't skip it, you'll be missing out on an important component of the VN!

Yes and it's horrible. They also changed the story pretty much completely, so I have no idea why they even used it as adaption material.
