(CNN) Too much caffeine caused the death of a 16-year-old high school student from South Carolina who collapsed during class last month, according to the county coroner.

Davis Allen Cripe died from a caffeine-induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts announced in a news conference Monday. During an arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm, the heart may not be able to pump enough blood to the body, and lack of blood flow affects the brain, heart and other organs.

The teen consumed three caffeine-laced drinks -- a cafe latte, large Diet Mountain Dew and an energy drink -- in a two-hour period before collapsing in his classroom at Spring Hill High School on April 26, Watts said.

Yikes. We're long overdue in the states for a crackdown on this kind of shit.

What kind of crackdown are you looking for? Maybe some simple education or labeling is in order instead of restricting our choices?

Hmm, that doesn't seem like all that much caffeine. I wonder if the poor kid had some unknown condition.

Sounds more like we need better means to diagnose caffeine sensitivity to help find people who should avoid it.

Probably. I wonder if he was taking caffeine pills too. You need a LOT of caffeine to cause an arrhythmia.

Not unless he already had an underlying cardiac issue they were unaware of. It's recommended that minors get less than 100mg of caffeine a day. A coffee alone would have 165mg.

That sounds pretty low to be honest. I used to drink 2 cans of Monster a day though. Then I questioned why the fuck I'm doing it. Still miss the Ripper flavour :(

I figured it was gonna be 3 energy drinks. Does a latte or dew even compare to them?

Just three drinks? I used to regularly drink coffee and energy drinks one after the other. College was crazy.. but I do kinda miss it in a weird way

I drank a huge can of Redbull once ( I mean huge) before hitting the gym, and I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I almost asked the reception desk to call an ambulance, it was bad. Never again.

It was the worst 45 min of my life. Kneeling on the floor clutching my chest.

Crackdown no. New widespread education on possible downside of caffeine for some individuals, yes. The modern push to use caffeine as a selling point had made people think it is safe for everyone.

I get jittery after drink a single Jolt in a short period (10-15 min). I can drink caffeine is I spread it out over the day 2-3 cups worth.

My husband can't have caffeine at all for mental and stomach reasons.

I've been stacking caffeine pills and coffee for years, and I'm like a really tiny person. He must've had some sort of undiagnosed predisposition to heart problems or something. I hope.

That amount of caffeine is harmless to 99.9999999% of people. The kid clearly had a defect in his heart.

And no I'm not defending anything. Drinking that much caffiene and sugar in such a short timespan is crazy to me.? But kids will be kids. I can easily remember downing a 12 pack of coke in a day when I was 18.

Damn 3 drinks in a two-hour period, it is way too much.

I couldn't finish half of Redbull's can all day.

Some ppl are very sensitive to caffeine. I get euphoria from a doubleshot latte. And I remember the first time I had a large cup of coffee, I felt like I was dying.

When I was in high school I saw kids drink three things of Monster a day.

Shit's fucked, but I doubt she died strictly because of a caffeine OD

I've seen some terrible side effects of people taking pre-workout. The caffeine they put into these energy supplements/drinks is starting to get a little crazy.

As others have said that doesn't really seem like a large amount of caffeine, at least compared to what I've seen lots of other people drink and be fine. I wonder if he had a condition of some kind that no one knew about.

Most likely. That won't stop "Don't talk to me until I've had my coffee" type caffeine addicts from reacting like this across the internet:

Whatever condition he had was probably not going to be found until it's too late, even with healthcare screening.

Yikes. We're long overdue in the states for a crackdown on this kind of shit.

The vast majority of people in this thread could consume those amounts with no serious issues. There was obviously an underlying health issue that should have been diagnosed, and that IS something that more resources could be put towards. Diagnosis.

I have diagnosed anxiety and depression, it wasn't until I decided to cut down on caffeine (I was drinking quite a lot) that I noticed it was having a SEVERE affect on my mental health.

Caffeine is not for everyone, the public sentiment that it's a necessity in the modern world needs to go away.

Interesting they don't specify the energy drink.

I never fucked with anything beyond lattes in college, but I remember drinking those on no sleep and having my neck seize and twitch during class. Not fun.

Yeah there must be some kind of underlying heart condition here. I was drinking coffee pretty regularly at 16, and I drink more than probably 2x the amount of caffeine in those 3 drinks every day.
