Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

That also comes under my question.. "Why did Platinum sign the contract?" because that's fucking stupid signing up for something that traps you like that. Whoever at Platinum agreed to that needs fired.

That's like buying a house and signing a contract that says "We can change the amount you pay each month and how much the house will cost at any time during this contract and there is nothing you can do about it", nobody is gonna sign that shit.

Because PG were looking for companies to work with and only MS was willing to sign up for a game of this scale. Not even Nintendo wanted to do nothing with it.

Actually, I have heard from my friends at MS that the whole gaming division is under heavy scrutiny. I really wouldn't be surprised to see them drastically cut, and even more I highly expect the "Scorpio" to be delayed - that is a piece of information I have been keeping to myself to keep from being labeled a console warrior... We know there will be a new Forza this year, but everything else is up in the air...

I'd expect some kind of Minecraft clone to "diversify" the third-party lineup if Scorpio actually releases this year.

Meanwhile, MS is sitting on all of Rare's properties which we may never see again. If it won't be a major "success", the game will never see release. So probably never see another Banjo, or Conker, or any number of titles. Instead, they have Rare working on a multiplayer (has to be), pirate simulator. Pray Sea of Thieves is a success, or Rare will be next studio canned.

Speaking of Minecraft, why hasn't MS leveraged the IP and made a Minecraft 2 yet? Yes, Minecraft still sells well, but it's a consistent flow of sales, not the enormous sales a brand new entry would sell.

I like Phil but this seems weird of him to say. A game being cancelled is good for Xbox gamers? Maybe it wouldn't have turned out well, who's to say, but it being released wouldn't be bad for Xbox gamers. And in terms of 2017 exclusives, yeah, it'd be nice to see them.

I guess he's eluding to the fact that they might spend the resources which would've been used for this game on other games that fans will enjoy? Confusing tweet nonetheless.

Because PG were looking for companies to work with and only MS was willing to sign up for a game of this scale. Not even Nintendo wanted to do nothing with it.

Probably because they already had a project in the oven with Platinum (Bayonetta 2) and had just shipped another game the previous year from that studio (The Wonderful 101).

So looking back, at Gamescom 2015 they announced a release window of holiday 2016.
Then just 4 months later in January 2016 they pushed it back to "2017"

Game was in trouble for a while.

You might want to find the link if you don't want to be annoyed by the baseless speculations then.

I posted this earlier in this thread:

They were teasing multiplayer at TGS 2014, a few months after the game was revealed. I have a feeling that Kamiya may have hinted at multiplayer even earlier, but don't really feel like looking stuff up.

I personally think Kamiya cursing at Microsoft had to do with auxiliary details (which you would think MS has more control over to begin with), like the marketing or presentations. He once openly criticized the art of MS's official site for the game.

Also thinking we were seeing a "depressed" Kamiya on stage is ridiculous. How he acts in interviews and within documentaries is not how you should base how he feels about presenting to a huge crowd. On top of this, E3 is very stressful, in a different time zone, and he's probably not as comfortable speaking english, in that context.

Anyway, isn't it the side of speculation to provide evidence?

I Like that he is thinking what is best for me but at the same time, what has Phil done lately besides put a positive spin on everything. Which has worked for the most part.

He can't answer it in a tweet but I wish he can elaborate on what he means "what's best for the players"

Protecting us from a No Mans Sky type scenario? Yes I feel like I wasted my $60 dollars but still some people enjoyed it.
I feel like Phil is a good guy working in a nightmare of corporate politics and red tape. I'm surprised he hasn't jumped out.

Maybe the game was tested and was a piece of crap? Crap hurts a games ecosystem and by extension the people who use it.

Not saying this is true but it could be a reason why it's good for gamers

Maybe, but systems get lame exclusives sometimes and it doesn't damage anything. Knack comes to mind, as does Killzone Shadow Fall. I would just like to see a better lineup from them and maybe we'll see some great stuff at E3 for this year. But this rubs me the wrong way.

Man, it breaks my heart to say it but I haven't had a reason to power up my xbox in a minute now... Future is looking barren as well.

It is absolutely crazy to me that I am considering actually taking it down and putting it in storage with my other consoles but here we are, I guess.

Wow, l hope Microsoft are gearing up for a massive E3 as l can't see many exclusives on the horizon:

Crackdown 3
Halo Wars 2
Sea Of Thieves
State Of Decay 2

Anything else? Possibly Forza and some flavour of Minecraft?

I think l might be clinging to the good old OG Xbox/early 360 days, when there were plenty of unique experiences.

I think I can count on two hands the number of Microsoft published games that have actually panned out this decade.

And I'm saying that's apples to oranges. How can you not see that? You're comparing a stable of games only announced at E3 2014 to a stable of games announced over a period of time leading up to and including E3 2014. That's improperly handled data sorting sir.

Either you're playing some sort of "Lie, Damned Lies, and Statistics" level game here to bolster a particular narrative or you just can't see what I'm trying to say here.

I don't understand why this is so hard for you to understand.

- I'm comparing the 2014 E3 conference for Sony and Micosoft
- Microsoft choosing to show new games that were far from release and Sony choosing to show already announced games is part of that comparison.
- I'm trying to say Sony plays it safe, they could have shown a CG trailer for Horizon or Days Gone, but they didn't. Microsoft on the other hand did the opposite.

Why are you guys even arguing about Spencer's tweet? It's PR, it doesn't actually mean anything. He's not really believing that the game was canceled for a greater good, but he couldn't say: "yep, we canned that crap and our 2017 line-up doesn't exist".

You can't just keep throwing money at something and hope that it improves. The latest demo for the game was rather underwhelming, and Microsoft had much more access to what had been completed than the rest of us. Maybe it seemed like a lost cause to them, and instead of giving Platinum even more time and money (that they felt would have been a waste), they cut their losses and ran.

Like I said, perhaps indeed a great business decision.

But he should spare us the condescension and pandering of pretending it was "4 xbox gamers" to leave a prolific developer with their biggest project cancelled after four years.

Who is in charge of first party games at MS these days since Phil got promoted?

It's time to bring back Shane Kim it seems! Perhaps he could bring RE5 to the platform.

Phil I promise you it is absolutely not better 4 Xbox gamers.

Maybe they cancelled it because it was going to be a trainwreck? They would rather cancel than release a bad game? Maybe it was going to keep costing time and money but the result wasn't viable for the investment?

That's the angle that makes the most sense as of now.

Resources are unlimited?

That would make sense if Microsoft had a bevy of other projects on at the moment but they don't seem to have any. They need to seriously impress at E3 this year for their 2017 lineup to be considered big enough to justify a cancellation like this.

EDIT: And as Monkey says above, it's not like Microsoft is hurting at all.

Is that picture floating around (about MS supposedly withholding payment) legit? Seems like quite the "bomb" to drop just out fo the blue. And we all know how the internet loves its dramas, real or otherwise.
