SCE Executive Vice President: Possible enhanced version PS4, no first party for Vita

Knowing that I have the best performance and graphics is the coolest thing about owning a console. I have a PC but there are people with better graphics than me. No one has a better PS4 than me though. And no one can play a better looking Uncharted 4 than me.

It's just a nice feeling to have the best.

This is a really fucking stupid reason to not allow people to pay more for a more capable console, if they want the option.

If it delays the release of PS5 isn't somethinh that will release every year and games are optmized tô work on the standard version, I think it is a good idea.

No BS exclusive games or games that dint work well on the regular PS4. No one loses anything this way.

It could work, but in a certain way.

The way they could approach this is, enabling full SSHD support, that alone would make loading times faster. On that same PS4 they could add PS1, PS2 chip for backwards compatibility. Maybe add 1gb or 2 of more ram for faster multitasking purposes.

All of what I suggested would simply make this a PS4 for the enthusiasts but of COURSE you would have to pay more. Games would still be the same and run equally on both systems. I know I would buy one of these if it came true.

And while their at it, why not make a bigger case, my ps4 sounds like NASA is trying to launch a rocket.

Doing it this way would NOT split people up.

The PS4 doesn't need chips to play PS1 & PS2 games, it's powerful enough to emulate both platforms, it does need a PS3 chip to play PS3 games though.

The enhanced version PS4 was always going to happen.

The switch to x86 for both platforms made this generation hugely important. Backwards compatibility with future generations meant the victor this generation would have a massive advantage in following generations that could build on itself.

Sony is not going to want to redesign their OS or APIs. They are going to augment what they have to maintain their advantage and put pressure on Microsoft to either leapfrog them or get out of the business entirely.

It's a smart strategy. Xbox One will likely be Microsoft's last console. They will refocus on PC and mobile gaming.

PS4 Elite wouldn't be bad as long as Sony makes standard PS4 the lead platform for every game, making sure it is never left out.

PS4 'high performance' should be just that, a platform that scales up every PS4 game to 4k/1080p/60fps and add some graphical filters and shit.

They could as well add Cell/emulators and make it PS1/PS2/PS3/PSVTV compatible for the ultimate PlayStation experience (tm).

Maybe a high performance ps4 is somewhat like Xbox One Elite... some enhacement like a hybrid disk, a better pad (more battery life PLEASE), a better WiFi and a less hot/noisy system.

Liquid cooled overclocked PS4, with PS3 chip and DS4 Premium.

Why wouldn't console manufacturers take a protracted Apple Like model?

I don't know how this is "shocking" news. Budgets have balooned to a level where we will never get a jump in quality akin to PS1 to PS2. It is financially irresponsible to develop a photorealistic game and not have it release on every platform available in a one generation radius.

Budgets are too high in this day and age to not release on legacy platforms. Don't be suprised if you see the next GTA, COD, and Destiny still on last generation platforms. The best way to tackle an issue like this is to give performance boosts that can facilitate gamers to upgrade in intervals. It allows less developer shock, facilitates healthy hardware revenue, and keeps the platforms from stagnating.

If PS4S (I like the name better than PS4.1) releases with support for 4K, garunteed 60 FPS versions of 30 FPS titles on the PS4, and improved support for Morpheus- I think it's a great idea.

SEGA is a prime example why this idea never worked in the console market.

It sounds cool at first to have multiple consoles that are meant to support everything and anything, but then the hardware begins to pile up, development gets fragmented, it's expensive, and people lose interest.

times have changed significantly since sega was making hardware

Ugh I hope we dont need to buy a new PS4 for VR. Sounds like this is not the case though. Im not up for an enhanced PS4. Just wait for PS5.

You wouldn't. Sony is definitely targeting the current PS4 for VR. It'd be product suicide to require customers who wanted VR to buy a new console and the headset at the same time. The number of people willing to do that would be incredibly small. What I foresee happening is that in 2017 Sony will offer an enhanced console that would allow VR games that ran at 60FPS to run at 120FPS. I can also see that some demanding PC VR games could be ported only to the enhanced PS4 because the regular PS4 couldn't handle it. That's not going to happen for a while. The market for VR capable hardware is small enough that no publisher is going to want to cut it down even more by requiring very high end hardware.

This wouldn't be a matter of waiting for a PS5. There would be no PS5 per se. Consoles would be more like PC in that they'd have smaller but more frequent improvements. I'd say a hardware refresh every 3 years sound about right with each version guaranteed to have full support for 6 years. So for example Sony would say that for 6 years after a refresh, every game released on the PlayStation platform would have to support that version of the console even if it offered some extra bells and whistles for a later improved console version.

High-performance PS4 sounds like a terrible idea. Now developers have to support two models, existing customers are stuck with knowing the console they bought last year is already outdated. And for what? PS4 is selling great, XB1 is trailing pretty far behind, and the console is just hitting its stride. This better get squashed internally quickly.

I don't think two tier console hardware has ever been anything other than a train wreck, I brought a 32X and we all know how that panned out.

All you'll end up getting is games that run poorly on the low tier or ones that aren't much better on the high tier.

Sony have the biggest install Base and the most powerful hardware why mess that up?

If they do that then im going to sell my PS4 and never gonna buy another console from them.

Thats like the worst thing they can do. And actually a betrayal to those who already bought it. Do they think 400$/€ isnt that much?

It's much easier for the market to accept quick upgrades on mobile/portable devices because they are by design not intended to be stationary. Nintendo, Apple, Samsung et. al can change their portable device models quickly because the device isn't meant to be placed in one spot and stay there for years.

Things like TVs, Desktop PCs and Home Game Consoles are bigger devices designed to be hooked up once and left there for at least a few years until they stop being supported or break.

A mid-gen console update would be disastrous.
Also my PS4 has PT installed on it so I'm not eager to sell it.

If this is the direction consoles are going, then I guess they have less time left than I imagined. It won't take people long to realize what a cumbersome model this is and just invest in a decent PC.

This is a really fucking stupid reason to not allow people to pay more for a more capable console, if they want the option.

It's an even more stupid reason if some exclusives migrate over to nuPS4. With all the goodwill they've built with this system it would be a massive slap to the face for early adopters. I just bought mine last month, and I would be as hell as pissed knowing that there could be a possibility to get ripped off from my purchase. They're playing a very dangerous game with this move.

I read this as...

PlaystationVR is going to bring the PS4 to it's knees and we may need to release an updated PS4 to push pixels.

If the high performance PS4 meant devs had to specifically code for that as well then that'd be stupid.

Just make a PS5 and quit dicking around.

Developers already support multiple configurations on PCs which is vastly more difficult than support 2 versions of PS4.

Just look at the XB1 for a reason to do this. Those on top aren't guaranteed to stay on top. I predict that both Microsoft and Sony will do this, but if one of them doesn't, then they are going to get left behind.

Technology is moving a lot quicker now. The improvements in VR each year will be stunning and 4K TVs will become more common. Consoles can no longer remain static for 8 years. With the standardization on x86 hardware there is much less of an incentive to stick with a console generation. Hardware development costs will be borne mostly my the component makers like AMD. With full forward and backward compatibility there would be no danger of fragmenting the market. All game development tools and engines would continue to work and the "first year game drought" issue would be a thing of the past.

The article writer specifically stats that Sony's original vision for the PS4 was to have it be an advanced PS3, with a scaled-up cell processor. The continue structure would allow for not only backward compatibility but also "forward" compatibility.

Although the change to the x86 structure deviated from the original plan, the essentially PC structure of the PC does allow for forward compatibility.

Ito-san also stated that the performance enhancement is something they considered if "it was necessary." (必要なタイミングでの性能強化)

So conceptually, it would not be like the New 3DS where certain are only playable on the PS4.1. The PS4 will still be the standard platform, but games may run at a better performance, resolution or image quality on the PS4.x console

Again, they're just acknowledging that they've considered the possibility.

Any company that decides to make a "high performance" version of their current home console can go fuck themselves.

I jumped from Xbox to PS after that whole "Online only, no used game, etc etc" bullshit and I have no problem jumping back to Xbox or even Nintendo if Sony decides to fuck over current PS4 owners by making an enhanced version of the same console.

I thought we'd gotten this year's "No first party for Vita" comment out of the way when Shu said it on Greg Miller's Podcast?

Expecting to hear it again in 2016 too.

Fuck that

Just release a PS5 in 3 to 4 years time. Have it be the same architecture and fully backwards compatible. Have old PS4 Games perform better like how old PC games perform better with better hardware (of course this will be upto the developer of they are bothered to have a performance patch).

I honestly don't know what the mobility of the device has to do with anything. TVs have a long life because there really isn't any need to upgrade. Old TVs can still play the new content. This isn't true with computing devices that can quickly become out of date and useless. Desktop PCs are a good example of this. They had explosive turnover in the 90s. The reason why they seem more stable today is because the performance improvement slowed down, not because they are stationary.

It's an even more stupid reason if some exclusives migrate over to nuPS4. With all the goodwill they've built with this system it would be a massive slap to the face for early adopters. Exclusives would not migrate over to the enhanced PS4. The PS4 would just be able to play those game on a 4K TV, or at a butter smooth 60FPS while the base PS4 might only get 30 FPS or need scaling to support a 4K TV.

The problem people are having with this whole concept is that they are treating it like a traditional new console generation which it wouldn't be.

How is it fucking over current owners? It won't make your PS4 worthless.

Console peeps wanted pc life, welcome to it!

Definitely a polarizing concept it seems, but I'd be up for it. Price drops can keep the older models competitive and attractive.

Is it possible for devs to make the game realize what type of ps4 it is in and then scale the game and graphics appropriately? If they could do that then hey wouldn't have to split the user base. And I bet they will release it around the NX release if they decide to go ahead with it.

A refresh on PS4 hardware with added power, support for 4k video, updated Wifi, VR stuff etc... actually makes a lot of sense as long as it is not to close to the original release date.

Hell, even a 2 year refresh cycle as long as no backward compatibility is lost would be fine for me and still less than what people put up with from Apple.

Definitely a polarizing concept it seems, but I'd be up for it. Price drops can keep the older models competitive and attractive.

Exactly. This alone would be worth going the enhanced PS4 route. The ability to eventually drop the base PS4 under $200 (or more) but still be able have new games come out for it because the enhanced PS4 could play them too with some improvements would be HUGE for marketing. The install base for the console would skyrocket.

Is it possible for devs to make the game realize what type of ps4 it is in and then scale the game and graphics appropriately? If they could do that then hey wouldn't have to split the user base.

That is exactly what they would do. It'd be like on the PC with all the graphical quality settings except that the game would automatically choose the settings for you based on the underlying hardware.

People wonder why the gaming industry stagnates.

The first sight of anything new, any gamble, people lose their shit. Kinect? LOL NSA. Wii Motion Controls? LMAO NOT BUYING A BABY BOX. Move to Steam-style distribution? FUCK OFF IT'LL NEVER WORK. Second screen? JUST LET ME USE MY CLASSIC CONTROLLER FOR EVERYTHING. Mid-cycle upgrade? LITERALLY THE END OF CONSOLE GAMING.

It's not that much and that was 2 years ago.
