The few who are left are probably just going to be eventually absorbed by general media outlets as their general games reviewer, if they weren't already.

Free market wins. There isn't much of a need for video game press anymore, hence it's collapsing. And lol @ trying to gain sympathy by talking about the need to promote indie games. That shit barely happened anyway. Gimme a break!
 
That's because independent YouTubers are providing all of the traditional functions of the gaming press in a higher quality, less compromised form.

This is obviously true of reviews, news, and commentary, but it's also true of industry analysis and even investigative journalism. It was Karl Jobst who broke the retro game market manipulation story, which is probably the single best piece of actual investigative gaming reporting of the last few years. Meanwhile, all people like Schreier can do is get "scoops" from their "sources" (read: friends) in the industry about studio closures and delays a few hours or days before they're publicly announced or get them to bitch off the record about crunch or how unfairly treated they are in their six figure jobs.

The gaming press isn't going extinct. It's been replaced by a superior alternative.

These people will literally do anything but hold themselves accountable as to why they are failing. Somehow it's our (the gamers) fault.
 
Why is a video game press even needed? Yea it made sense in like the 2000s to read magazines or go on sites like IGN to get news, reviews or previews of games coming out. It's not needed now with devs and publishers just being able to drop a trailer in their YouTube of where ever. And if people care enough about reviews, they'll just go to either a metacritic overall, some type of user review in steam or some type of influencer that they feel have similar tastes as them.

Not to mention these so called journalist aren't even journalists half the time but some lame ass "activists" . But I don't think that's necessary a video game problem, that seems to be a theme over the years in the general news, music and even sports media.
 
Id rather take note of people's reviews on here than trust these so called "journalists"

They did it to themselves accepting these media packs and inflated reviews to stay cushtie with the manufacturers.

Id trust a youtuber who doesn't have to go to media events, because theyve built a community over years that trusts them, over any of these review websites that seem to be more fanboy driven than honest.

How many xbox or Sony sites do we need reviewing games?

It's kind of funny (no Greg) when you step back and think about it. Crazy we accepted it for so long. Nothing more than marketing cogs in the machine vs real journalists.
 
All this tells me is that Schreiers job isnt full-time and it shows. Should never be a source for any news ever.

 
Every article or video from all of these people are just ads. Add to this the likes of DF who are trying to be harmful while disguising as neutral technicians lol.

No commentary youtubers replaced them for a long time ago, you can find videos litterally the day any game is available.

To be fair, there was literally nothing the journalism industry could have done to avoid the inevitable death of 99% of print media, online articles, and anything else that stood in the way of tiktok, twitter, and other shortform media. Hell, even if tiktok didn't exist, youtube and twitch were already killing them anyway.

Even old magazines like PSX and Play Magazine, which directly catered to certain demographics like GAF's, actually died faster than the other guys who are being complained about today.

I'm a huge proponent of the free market, but this is a pretty unique situation. Google almost anything gaming related, and most of not all of the results of the first few pages will all be AI-generated garbage, likely built from scraping one another, with whoever the original source was being buried beneath pages of instantly generated "articles".

There was a job with an "AI writing manager" I saw last year. They claimed the "managers needed to produce several thousand "articles" Per. Fucking. WEEK!

We can't treat this as "business as usual", because were quickly entering a total hellscape where nothing you see will have been touched by human hands.

And yeah, people want to poke fun at it because it's affecting media outlets that are pushing agendas, but we've already started seeing official digital marketplaces being inundated with AI-generated "games". The only realistic solution IS to have real gaming journalists and reviewers we can rely on — but if those people don't exist, then you won't be able to sort the good from the bad. And then only the biggest publishers WILL be able to be discovered, because they can just buy exposure.

Things have been bad with gaming journalists pushing real world agendas, which has only exacerbated the issue by alienating their audience further. But I think it's still a role that frankly NEEDS to exist.

That is, if we actually want there to be more games than just COD and other "safe" franchises devoid of any personality.

Adapt or die. It sucks but people with the right mindsets could have done something.

I wonder if he is treating self employed successful reviewers etc in this number.

And they maintain this attitude all the way until the end where they're jobless, broke, and left with no marketable or employable skills. It's really sad but I've got no sympathy for them. They just naturally selecting themselves into irrelevance which is the inevitable outcome, imo, for anyone who refuses to look in the mirror and adapt or change.

To add on to what you're saying, a lot of these guys were in their 30s or older when the dominos started falling. They would have not only needed to hire a forward thinker, that person would also need to convince the higher ups to shift their entire focus to a clout/personality-based method instead of a traditional news/magazine print method.

This would have needed to start right when gaming hit way larger audiences with the PS360Wii generation.

There are only a few outlets I can think of that did this and the only way they were successful was because they branched away from the parent company/previous boss in some manner.

Edit: Even then it's not a guarantee, as youtube/twitch audiences are fickle and will move on to the new hotness when they see a larger audience over there instead. Notice how even not many here bring up older 2000s and 2010s youtubers/streamers except for the ones who passed away.

I dunno, Schreier. You, and some of your colleagues, really needlessly dragged some good games and gamers through the mud. To say your clique is entirely blameless in this predicament isn't completely true.

When a gamer can aggregate tons of information from sites like gaf, resetera, reddit, who needs dedicated news sites for opinion pieces?

What would be nice is if Schreier used his platform to do things like call out Nintendo on bad/anti-consumer behaviors on a wider scale. Until he does that, he isn't a real journalist.
 
They are irrelevant at this point. Their sole purpose is to try to convince us things like trans characters lecturing the player about the evils of white men is a good thing to have in games. And the ESG money is going away, and so will their jobs.

The bait, bias and fanboy bullshit that dominates the gaming media is arguably worse than what you find in most gaming forums these days. There are a few good eggs left in gaming journalism, but they're rare drops in a click-chasing wasteland now.

Well, let's not jump the gun too much.

It's strange that Schreier basically cuts out all the Patreon establishments out of the equation, because a lot of them are leftovers of the websites that are being gutted. The likes of Kinda Funny, Easy Allies, MinnMax, etc are absolutely access media, only exclusively on video as opposed to webpage. Unfortunately, a lot of the bigger reviewers are on the borderline, like Skill Up; whom I don't believe is compromised, but it's not hard to imagine that there will be opportunists who see the vacuum when it's literally just IGN still standing, and move in to get all buddy buddy with developers.

If I were at these big publishers, I would take the opportunity to actually shut off the pipeline; recreate some distance from the consumer and the media. Take StreetsofBeige StreetsofBeige advice and push more employees to get tf off social media as far as work is concerned.
 
It's going to be so good when the entirety of the games media are completely unaccountable YouTubers who'll do anything for a free code or access to a press event with a free bar. Or even better, AI generated YouTubers who just say whatever the publisher wants without needing a code or free bar.
