HBO boss on Neil Druckmann’s departure: “A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full time job creating video games…”

I was wrong before. It got 16 nominations:

Fuck the Emmys, they'd give a lifetime achievement award to Shrek 2

Well yeah, the PSP3 port isn't just gonna direct itself. People assume the remakes were as emotionally hard hitting as they were just because they could copy the original game, but that's not true. And shame on you for thinking art that powerful could be created so cheaply. No, Neil has to pour his soul into each remake. Polygon compared the toll it takes on him to the rigors of childbirth. Did you guys not see that he put marijuana plants in the game? Do you know how much he risked by doing that? People at Naughty Dog were afraid they'd be arrested at one point. Not to mention absolute work he put in for lesbian freedom. This man was just taking shots at the system the whole time. Risking life and limb for radical causes, while delivering a soul charging narrative about the superiority of women and how emotional revenge is the only way of solving things and also bad.

That's mean Intergalactic is still with no clear vision and shape.
That clears the stage for another Naughty Dog Remaster of Remake.
Game dev is not easy and Neil makes it even harder.

Man I NEED one of those "full time jobs" were I am forced to produce NOTHING for nearly a decade and get worshiped

Maybe the company just got tired of him being away for months directing and voiced their frustration not long ago. Him being away hurts development. Also cancellation of TLOU multiplayer game and new projects starting might be a reason that he needs focus on ND even more.

This is my speculation: He left to start working TLOU Part 3 alongside Intergalactic. His Part 2 writing partner Halley Gross left the show at the same time and said that this is to make space for what comes next.
Maybe, but he didn't have priorities separate from and unaligned with his duties as the president and creative head of Naughty Dog. Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Naughty Dog jointly produce the show, so Neil's involvement was well-known, agreed upon, and therefore aligned with his duties. His level of involvement was planned, but his departure wasn't; that's why it was a "difficult decision" to "step away." It's true: Naughty Dog's output has been one-note lately, but his bosses were aware of the roadmap. If you look at him as a poor leader who abandoned his duties and has practically nothing to show for his promotion—if you're Naughty Dog—you certainly don't beg for him to return; you search for new leadership. So, I don't agree that he "left the show" because his "absence" negatively affected Naughty Dog. His "absence" was co-signed. I'm saying that he "left the show" because his presence negatively affected... the show. The HBO boss said, "A lot of people don't realize that Neil has a full-time job creating video games." Well, yeah, he does now. It's a convenient excuse and a diplomatic statement.

Also, I'm not surprised that Craig Mazin was attracted to source material even more radioactive than Chernobyl. That guy thinks he's found his niche.
