SCI-FI FRIDAY BITCHES

SG1 seemed pretty corny, amusing Daniel/Vala interactions aside. If this was my first impression of SG1, I probably would have been turned off quite a bit. Was interesting seeing T'leac dressed up in a suit though.

Atlantis was decent, not sure why they play up Mckay as being awkward around woman all of a sudden, he had no problems whatsoever flirting and coming onto sam back in season 5 of SG1.

ahhhhhh yes

i think they changed his style because he was a very pretentious character. Back on SG-1 I couldn't stand him. He was annoying and I didn't like his lines. So they softened his character up a little instead of making him such hard edged and I think it has worked.

Now he's a lot more bearable. Maybe it's just me though.

Yeah, that's probably why. I hated him in his first appearance, wanted to punch him in the face and kick him down a flight of stairs. Now in Atlantis he's the annoying nerdy know-it-all you can't help but like.

some of the vala/daniel dialogue was absolutely gold tonight :D

man, the more eps she is on, the more i want her to be the 5th member of sg-1 just for comedic reasons which is almost guaranteed not to happen :<

Yeah, I like her being on the show quite a bit. Hopefully she gets a few more episodes later on like Jonas did.

Atlantis was pretty good, I'm a sucker for McKay like JoshuaJSlone. :P

I still have to watch yesterday's BSG episode, but so far I've liked all three shows' latest seasons. BSG has been the best so far, though.

Heh, I'm grateful for bittorrent, because otherwise I'd be waiting for Space to show them (Canadian science fiction channel). And it'd probably be a long wait, especially for Atlantis. I heard they won't even be showing season 1 until 2006.

I liked all three shows episodes last night.

SG-1 was probably the weakest, but Mitchell/Vala have really lightened up the show-in fact, I think so far Season 9 has been its best when those two characters have been more in the limelight. None of the old characters feel right-Jackson has been incredibly stoic, Teal'c's involvement feels slapped-on and hamfisted. The new general and the new doctor are a bit better, but the show's going to have to figure out how to reconcile the gap.

Atlantis is great because Rodney McKay is probably one of the better characters in the show, along with the under-utilized Dr. Weir and the wondeful Shepard character. The new character they are bringing into the mix looks good. It's a shame they won't off Teyla and replace her character with someone more interesting-the acting is bad and the can't seem to do anything really interesting with her at all.

BSG is just the best show on television. Fantastic ep.

I'd agree that part of it is they simply had to make McKay a bit different to expand him from an occasional joke. Really I think the repeated risking of his life to save companions is a bigger change. However, my take on the McKay/women thing is it seems like he's fine being cocky and funny, but is unsure how to act when somebody actually likes him and it goes beyond the joke stage. He was similarly flustered in last season's "The Brotherhood".

On a bit of a tangent, McKay wasn't the only Atlantis character to be on SG-1. Weir was on the SG-1 season finale just before Atlantis started up, but it wasn't the same actress. What happened there?

It's been a long time since I've watched a TV show and got that 'can't wait to see what happens next episode' feeling. Yet every week, without fail, I download the torrent of BSG as soon as it's made available at the appropriate places and every week I'm left wanting to see more and more.
I think part of that is the DBZ factor. Few episodes have a really self-contained story, so we get a fraction of an episode's worth of update to several threads, all of which are left open.

Please never, ever, compare Battlestar Galactica to DBZ ever again. Never.

SG1 has been weak all season, some would say since last year. It's like they are spinning wheels but not going anywhere or at least getting there really slow. At this point I wished they would have just killed the show last season rather than drag it's corpse through the streets this way. What they really should have done is started from scratch with Bowder and a new group instead for keeping characters that honestly have no reason for being on the show any longer, i.e. Daniel, Sam, and T'elc. I can see possibly keeping Daniel but Sam should have been shipped off to Atlantis, Rodney should have been killed or sent back to Earth, possibly put him on SG1 and keep the Vala character as the rouge element on the show. They should have created a new character for Bowder rather than casting him as Jack the 3rd, Shepard from Atlantis being Jack the 2nd. Finally they should have come up with a more compelling enemy rather than falling back on the advanced race who wants people to think they are Gods; routine we just spent 9 years going through.

Been wondering that myself. It was cool to see the doctor from Earth 2 return to sci-fi as Weir on SG-1...and then as Atlantis the series starts up she's a new actress. Not to say Torri Higginson isn't working out regardless.

Anyway, SG-1 relying on yet another episode with Daniel being exasperated with Vala (look, there she is on the other hospital bed behind you again, Daniel!) is already old. I'm getting bored and ready to move on with things, hopefully the writers are too.

Atlantis was funny and memorable, if a little over-the-top. Nice to see them stretch things a bit, though I hope Beckett gets some good lovin' from the female soldier after what he had to put up with.

Battlestar was great again, though there is a lack of subtlety regarding Tigh's character and command flaws. The actor seems good, they should give his character some redeeming moments to make up for the last few episodes.

"What'd you think genius - you put a pilot in charge of crowd control"

The doctor is getting some choice lines....

(Not at all verbatim)

President: "I'm going to ask you to do something and you're not going to like it."
Doctor: "You're a horrible salesman."

What the hell is with the new gay ass intro to Battlestar? Its like its been Berman & Braga-ized.

Not to beat a dead horse by replying so late, but I actually like the UK theme better than the U.S. one. The problem is SCI-FI cut out the second half of the theme with the war drums. Which contrasted pefectly with the sorrowful sounding half before it. While the U.S. version just built up to the war drums.

You can compare the two:

UK Version

US Version

Was the pronouncement different in your version BSG?

...
It's pronounced frack (rhymes with back) but Ron Moore decided to change the spelling from the original series (where it was spelt frack) to the new way (frak) because he wanted it to be a four-letter word (he's so clever :P). The way you spelt it is wrong, plain and simple.

I love the Atlantis opening theme. :( Wish Sci-Fi would show the whole thing instead of stuffing another ad for Dairy Queen chicken strips in. :( :(

Pudding Tame said:
True, but if those 30 seconds of chicken strips helps to keep Galactica alive and still at 42 minutes, it's a decent trade.

Uh, no. SkyOne is still helping pay for Galactica. The 10 second intros on SG1 and Atlantis have nothing to do with it, Universal was just getting greedy.

Umm, we really don't know for sure.... they claimed it allowed them 30 more seconds of advertising time. But as the poster above me said ANYTHING to keep these shows on the air is fine with me.

Uh, SkyOne is still putting up something like $400,000 per ep of BSG; however the second season is airing in the US first because of the piracy.

Ahhh, but what does Sky One have to do with SciFi.... SciFi said they cut the intro so they could get more advertising time.

As an aside I was wondering why they were airing in the US first this season. But wouldn't piracy be an issue in UK as well?

Sorry, I didn't look it up in the dictionary. Still sounds like "freck" to me, though.

Because the SciFi channel (Universal) puts up a lot more money for the series than SkyOne does AND SkyOne shows it without commercials. People who download the SkyOne version don't watch it when it ends up airing in the US.

I did but that was mostly because I listened to the commentary for the last 5 episodes.

Great Battlestar episode tonight. Can't wait for next weeks episode when Starbuck and Boomer return to find the fleet splintered and everyone knowing Boomer is a cylon.

I do not get Sci-Fi, but on Space they showed Species. During a commercial break they set the whole movie back and hour , when the movie was due to end at 12pm, they just stopped the movie without showing the ending. At 12:30 they started Species 3. What happened to 2? Where is the ending to 1?

I just wanted to bitch about it someplace.

SciFi also make many crappy movies. Most recent was the one with that walking shark or whatever. Didn't even see it if you're wandering.

They need to cut their crap seriously. They can just skipped those SciFi inhouse ads during shows. You those the ones "if" becomes "SciFi" shit. Though the baby breathing fire was fun. One very classic was cool, it has a bunch of rotating clocks and the announcer says "You are watching the SciFi channel".

As for tonight's SciFi Friday it was pretty dull

SG1 was pretty boring.

Atlantis was alright. Nice they are expanding the Wraith a bit.

BGS was ok too. Nothing really special for me.

BSG is just more proof that in the fomer ST: TNG team of Moore and Braga; Moore was the genius and Braga was the hack.

BGS was ok too. Nothing really special for me.

It was a really big episode that explains some story threads that started last season regarding the Cylons.

As long as Space continues to air movies largely unedited, they can do whatever they want to garbage like Species.

BSG kicked my ass. but also makes me wonder if Starbuck might be a cylon by the end of this season. Anything is possible. The show is gonna kick ass next week.

Atlantis well its slow i think they might wait till the Ori come into the picture.

Watching SG1 now. SG1 has been good to me this season its been nice.

Nah, she isn't a Cylon. Her baby though...

Oh shit Manabyte i didnt even think of it that way. Crap this show is awsome. I dont buy dvds much but do you know if the Battlestar DVD set coming out in September comes with the pilot and podcast commentaries?

If so i might end up buying it when i get my new job.

IF so i'm glad i waited and didnt buy the UK version from Bestbuy.

So how much does it take to make a episode of BSG exactly? A few million? Cause if enough money from the sales of this dvd keep the series going i will buy two.

Y'know, for all the commercial time that cutting out the Stargate intros gets, they blow that amount several times by showing us what we're going to be watching in 0-2 hours. I just stick my fingers in my ears, look away, and go "la la la la jesus I can stand to wait 5 minutes" or something.

SG1 was alright. I enjoyed Daniel and the Prior with dueling rhetoric. It reminded me of the older episode where there was a trial regarding whether Skaara or his Goa'uld host had the right to his body. I was kinda hoping that their need for a second person using a hand device would be their excuse to reintroduce Carter, but no luck there.

Atlantis too was pretty standard, though I enjoyed Dex as a regular team member for the first time.

BSG,
damn, who isn't getting shot?

Is there any concensus on how to refer to the two BSG shows to differentiate them? New BSG, BSG 2003/2004 ?
