The main reason I don't see them as being this benevolent beings that some portray is.....why?
How in the hell would helping puny beings like us help them in any way? Wouldn't it benefit them more, if they found us, to simply just harvest everything from here they could then bail?
One thing we do know for certain is the Universe is hostile as hell to forms of life. I'm willing to bet any advanced civilization would be looking for every advantage they can get. This is assuming there are even intelligent beings anywhere near us, something I'm not convinced of any ways.
Man, so many people scared of aliens.
What's the worst that happens?
They kill us?
Big deal.
Survival instinct. It's coded in our minds, some people are able to suppress it, others don't. Our technological advancements are evidence of it.
Intelligence is governed by the pre frontal cortex (the newest part of the brain that makes us smart). Thinking in perspective of the brain, any advance civilization that might have the capability to get here, must have elliminated racism, sexual violence, war or murder on their planet long before advancing to such a stage.
They must have advance nutrition and medical knowledge in order to get their brain to function at peak performance collectively speaking.
I think a lot about the brain... just my train of thought
I'm not sure if whatever alien species has an interest of helping us evolve, like in "2001". We can amazing things by ourselves, and we keep improving every year. What others think is that we don't need to take yet on another risk. EDIT: And since you don't mind dying, I guess you wouldn't mind if that greatness is achieved by the following generations rather than rush it! (although I'm pretty sure this active SETI would take decades if not centuries heh)I don't know, just seems silly to me to avoid doing something because "Oh hey, bad aliens might notice us and kill us."
Like, sure, they might.
Or we could instead find awesome stuff, and do great things.
But, hey, you know, if we're dead, then no worries - we're dead!
I'm in the "please don't" camp, personally. Not comfortable deliberately signalling our existence until we've hit singularity or at least got a population outside of Earth.

Yeah, but being alive when we make contact would be a life changing experience...
We are moving too slow. The Americans should have built a base on the moon already. At the rate they are going, we should be lucky to have humans land on Mars by 2100 or so. Interest in astronomy is at an all time low. Confirmation of intelligent alien life will go a long way to speed things up a bit.

Voyager was a waste of time. It will be destroyed eventually inside the ort belt.Haven't we already done this with Voyager?
Also, assuming that the aliens we contact are far away, they'd probably receive the message long after we're gone, and even then we'd have no reason to worry as it'd probably take even longer for them to reach us.
Man, so many people scared of aliens.

Big deal.
But death scares me, terri![]()
The worst that can happen is that we the aliens respond with their profanity. Distances between whatever inhabited worlds are out there will insure each species survival. So I see this fear about about actively searching for aliens as silly.
As i said, hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
Contacting any alien life should be done backed up by enough weapons to suggest MAD doctrine. If they get it, we can talk, and perhaps eventually reach a point where MAD is no longer needed.
It is better to be safe than sorry.
One's fist-on-your-face might be a life changing experience.
Unless they have relativistic weapons. In which case we are fucked.
One's fist-on-your-face might be a life changing experience.
Say that to a relativistic rock you cannot see before it hits you. No distance saves you from such, if such are used.
Boy, these aliens aren't very creative >.>

There are many things to be more scared of than death, Phanty.
Interesting links. Everyone here should read themExtensive discussion available here. See the sections starting at "The Fermi Paradox" and more specifically "The Killing Star".
The discussion begins from Pellegrino & Zebrowski (note: Pellegrino is the man who did advisory work for Cameron on the strikingly plausible spacecraft in Avatar):
In general, it is not just advanced civilisations that need to be feared, but also members of advanced civilisations. If somebody can own an interstellar starship, they are a threat on a planetary scale if they are not benevolent. If a civilisation is not actively policed at a high level, and their advanced technology is at their disposal, people acting on their own accord could subjugate primitive planets or destroy on a whim.
Creativity is overrated in front of raw power.
EDIT Or is it: Creativity is overrated before raw power? Bah, whatever, it is something like that probably.
Like aliens?

If anything, they'll laugh at how primitive we are and how awful we are to one another. Of course, they would probably help with the religion debate.Man, so many people scared of aliens.

Do you honestly believe that? Billions of galaxies with billions of stars. It would be mathematically impossible for there not to be life outside of our one planet. They should do it. It's not like there's anything out there.
A big rock at 30% the velocity of light would freaking erase us from existence. (Credit to ThoseDeafMutes, very interesting read!)

lol @ the "please don't" camp. What a boring existence that would be to just stick to our little corner of the galaxy/universe like a planet of hermits.
Making contact with some form of intelligent life would be the best thing ever, even if they wipe us out like a day later.
Onward and upward, FOR PSYENCE
Yeah, I mean, of course it would.
But just seems kind of anticlimactic and boring >.>

For real. I'm not getting any younger. If there are aliens in the universe then I want to know even if it's fucking Galactus or something from Warhammer. Dying won't bother me if I go to the grave with such an amazing discovery.
No one is saying never. People are simply asking for our civilization to learn how to walk before running. Is it too much to ask?
