Scientists - Time to actively try to contact aliens using "active SETI"

The main reason I don't see them as being this benevolent beings that some portray is.....why?

How in the hell would helping puny beings like us help them in any way? Wouldn't it benefit them more, if they found us, to simply just harvest everything from here they could then bail?

One thing we do know for certain is the Universe is hostile as hell to forms of life. I'm willing to bet any advanced civilization would be looking for every advantage they can get. This is assuming there are even intelligent beings anywhere near us, something I'm not convinced of any ways.

To be honest if they are thousands of years more advanced than us, then they don't need really to harvest our resources, they can make them, atom by atom. Heck, we're getting there with 3D printing.

Everything that can reach/hear us won't give enough of a shit to attack us or even want to attack us and anything that would want to attack us is surely stuck on their crappy planet killing each other and oblivious to any of our signals. Once you hit that level of tech killing and stealing from primitive warmongers won't be at the top of your agenda.

Ready some shrooms and lsd on a space station outside earth for The Welcoming party of peaceful & free loving aliens, asap.

Man, so many people scared of aliens.

What's the worst that happens?
They kill us?
Big deal.

Survival instinct. It's coded in our minds, some people are able to suppress it, others don't. Our technological advancements are evidence of it.

Intelligence is governed by the pre frontal cortex (the newest part of the brain that makes us smart). Thinking in perspective of the brain, any advance civilization that might have the capability to get here, must have elliminated racism, sexual violence, war or murder on their planet long before advancing to such a stage.

They must have advance nutrition and medical knowledge in order to get their brain to function at peak performance collectively speaking.

I think a lot about the brain... just my train of thought

I don't know, just seems silly to me to avoid doing something because "Oh hey, bad aliens might notice us and kill us."

Like, sure, they might.
Or we could instead find awesome stuff, and do great things.

But, hey, you know, if we're dead, then no worries - we're dead!

What if their morals is different than ours.

Maybe a very advanced version of humanity could consider that is better to not disturb "lesser" species but we could find something different out there, something that thinks that the best course of action is to actually intervene "for our own sake" and impose their alien morals.

Frankly, I think an hostile encounter is very unlikely (or any kind of encounter) but I wouldn't gamble with my entire species future.

What if these signals contact some sort of organism that destroys planets and this wakes them out of hibernation and sends them straight to earth? I'm not talking like a race of humanoid aliens, but a world devourer like Galactus or some shit, it specifically waits to receive these signs of advanced life to judge whether a planet has enough nourishment.

Indeed, the consumption of cereals helped tremendously with our intellect, imagine what technology can do to improve our nutrition, thus improving our intelligence and so on.

The passage of time and the will of the people who fight these issues will take care of our social problems. This is why I don't want humans to achieve immortality just yet. Imagine all those hateful ideas surviving for another century. It would horrible for our growth.

I'm not sure if whatever alien species has an interest of helping us evolve, like in "2001". We can amazing things by ourselves, and we keep improving every year. What others think is that we don't need to take yet on another risk. EDIT: And since you don't mind dying, I guess you wouldn't mind if that greatness is achieved by the following generations rather than rush it! (although I'm pretty sure this active SETI would take decades if not centuries heh)

As i said, hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
Contacting any alien life should be done backed up by enough weapons to suggest MAD doctrine. If they get it, we can talk, and perhaps eventually reach a point where MAD is no longer needed.
It is better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah, but being alive when we make contact would be a life changing experience...

One's fist-on-your-face might be a life changing experience.

Haven't we already done this with Voyager?

Also, assuming that the aliens we contact are far away, they'd probably receive the message long after we're gone, and even then we'd have no reason to worry as it'd probably take even longer for them to reach us.

We are moving too slow. The Americans should have built a base on the moon already. At the rate they are going, we should be lucky to have humans land on Mars by 2100 or so. Interest in astronomy is at an all time low. Confirmation of intelligent alien life will go a long way to speed things up a bit.

It will also speed up our extinction.

But death scares me, terri :(

Voyager was a waste of time. It will be destroyed eventually inside the ort belt.

The worst that can happen is that we the aliens respond with their profanity. Distances between whatever inhabited worlds are out there will insure each species survival. So I see this fear about obliteration by aliens as silly.

Say that to a relativistic rock you cannot see before it hits you. No distance saves you from such, if such are used.

Unless they have relativistic weapons. In which case we are fucked. I dont know how MAD works when someone can launch the missiles and by the time the other guys realizes they are already atoms. At best we probably eliminate each other.

I hope it's like mass effect where we send some colonies out, make first contact only for them to wipe those out, and then they come to a quick realization like humanity is crazy as fuck.

Extensive discussion available here. See the sections starting at "The Fermi Paradox" and more specifically "The Killing Star".

The discussion begins from Pellegrino & Zebrowski (note: Pellegrino is the man who did advisory work for Cameron on the strikingly plausible spacecraft in Avatar):

In general, it is not just advanced civilisations that need to be feared, but also members of advanced civilisations. If somebody can own an interstellar starship, they are a threat on a planetary scale if they are not benevolent. If a civilisation is not actively policed at a high level, and their advanced technology is at their disposal, people acting on their own accord could subjugate primitive planets or destroy on a whim.
Interesting links. Everyone here should read them

Boy, these aliens aren't very creative >.>

A big rock at 30% the velocity of light would freaking erase us from existence. (Credit to ThoseDeafMutes, very interesting read!)

If anything, they'll laugh at how primitive we are and how awful we are to one another. Of course, they would probably help with the religion debate.

They should do it. It's not like there's anything out there.
Do you honestly believe that? Billions of galaxies with billions of stars. It would be mathematically impossible for there not to be life outside of our one planet.

lol @ the "please don't" camp. What a boring existence that would be to just stick to our little corner of the galaxy/universe like a planet of hermits.

Making contact with some form of intelligent life would be the best thing ever, even if they wipe us out like a day later. And hey, best case scenario is they'll give us warp pipes and skip us like 8 levels ahead of where we should be. #WorthIt

Onward and upward, FOR PSYENCE

For sure. Either through a genuine desire to share information or the fear of what it could bring would both be great motivators if it were confirmed in any way. The latter probably more so than the former.

I can see it now. It'll be like the Vulcans arriving in "First Contact". They show up in good faith for explorations sake, just about to make that historic first handshake, and some paranoid american shoots him.

Exactly.
It seems like the mindset of "Can't leave the house, might get hit by a car" >.>

Yeah, I mean, of course it would.
But just seems kind of anticlimactic and boring >.>

What does anyone know about how a civilization thousands of years ahead of us would destroy a planet haha?

And if being the recipient of an attack by another intelligent lifeform isn't exciting to you, I can't help ya.

No one is saying never. People are simply asking for our civilization to learn how to walk before running. Is it too much to ask?

I didn't even think of that. Interesting

For real. I'm not getting any younger. If there are aliens in the universe then I want to know even if it's fucking Galactus or something from Warhammer. Dying won't bother me if I go to the grave with such an amazing discovery.

Seems futile, we'll just be blasting signals into space. We do enough of that every day anyway. If aliens noticed the signals and wanted to do something about it they would have by now; the chances of any signal that has been blasted into space reaching aliens are slim to none.

This sounds like a "fuck you, I got mine!" to future generations heh.

Our civilization needs a jumpstart because 90% of the planet has turned into jerks sitting around throwing rocks at other jerks, or jerks watching jerks be jerks. Including the non-human life. We're all jerks. There's no walking much less running.

Some alien responding back with a "'Sup brehs." would get everyone back in line so fast. Reach for the stars, Juan29.zapata.
