These movies are not as great as you think they are. Black panther and Ant man are not amazing films. They don’t do anything particularly interesting.
But they have super heroes, and explosions and snappy dialogue so I guess thy are considered masterpieces now

Yeah, it is. It's like the difference between real 80s movies and Stranger Things or AHS 1984.
I'll admit though digital looks way better now than in the late 2000s. Everything was fucking brown or teal. There's even a JCVD movie that has a goddamn sepia filter on for the entire movie. Something like Triple 9 from a few years back looks like it was shot on film though it wasn't. Some of these movies really do look like somebody shot them on an iphone though.

Mainstream blockbusters have always been one of my favourite genres. From jaws, to t2, to gladiator, to lord of the rings, to batman dark knight.
But these movies are so devoid of story, characters, originality. Liken them to a theme ride is pretty spot on. You are basically bouncing between explosions. Its like those themepark rides they had in the 90s where you watched a large movie screen with short cgi film with movable/shaking chairs. Only 3 hours long and no moving chair.
Frankly It becomes boring. I watch guardians of the galaxy in theatres and i fell asleep. Its like watching one long video game cutscene.
Its not a popcorn flick. Its boring.

calling marvel films a "theme park" is an insult to the geniuses who created the characters and story. not many people can come up with the idea of "spider man". it takes a lot of imagination and thought to create the world marvel has created.

Look, I’m not here to ruin anyone’s good time. I don’t click with the movies at all, but it’s fine if you do. It’s not world politics, it’s not important, and if somebody, somewhere, is actually having fun, instead of all the dismal stuff that’s always happening, I’m down for it.

I do find it depressing that the MCU make up most of my top 10 movies of the past decade. The exceptions being Logan and Blade runner 2049.
As for arthouse cinema this past decade has been so awful.
Compare the 2000s Oscar nominees with the 2010s....such a stark contrast in quality. We had No Country For Old Men, TWWB, Zodiac, The Dark Knight, Little Miss Sunshine, Inglorious Basterds, kill Bill 1 & 2......sigh the good days.

I like his movies generally more than MCU movies, but what I don’t like is arrogance.
I’m an artist in a visual medium and I’ve always resented the marching orders that truly great art must have deep, and dark thematic content. Or make a social statement on the issue du jour in the cultural space. It is a limiting and myopic way of perceiving the world and the creative process.

The only other blockbusters right now that hit over a billion are Star Wars, Fast and the Furious, Jurassic Park and Disney remakes. It's 70% MCU though.

Wife and I watched Taxi Driver after Joker, she unfortunately didn't think much of it, she also got bored of Casino when I tried to get her to watch it a few years ago.
She loved Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed and Shutter Island though.
She found The Last Temptation of Christ and Gangs of New York interesting.

Really though, he doesn't even know the full context of the quote. He literally says he didn't pay attention to it and she presents it as though Scorsese only said Marvel films aren't cinema, completely ignoring the crucial theme park portion of the quote. And then she brings up the "millions and billions of dollars", like that's fucking relevant. Yep, no agenda on her part!

Visually they all look the same. They all use the same type of color grading that creates a flat and dull picture when they should pop visually. The second GoTG being a small exception. The first Thor was not a good film, but it was gorgeous to look at. Hell Marvel's Civil War looks like it was completely shot in a parking lot.
I'm not saying all digital films look like piss compared to actual film. Mad Max Fury Road and Skyfall were shot on the same digital recorder that most Marvel films use, and those films actually have artistic vision and thought put into them. Disney hires these great cinematographers and doesn't actually let them do their job.
No one is saying you can’t enjoy these movies.

Disney/Marvel movies make lots of money and better-than-average reviews on a literal production/assembly line. That's good enough for them, but not for me. There's no amount of money or reviews that would feel right if I wasn't personally happy with my own work.

Yeah, but that's a low budget horror movie and it looks fine. Those marvel movies have approximately 800 quadgillion dollars put into each one and they still look cheap. Probably all the greenscreen and CGI combined with shooting digitally.
