How is it game of the year if it ended in tie?

That was some soccer level shit. And by soccer level shit, I mean boring.

This game highlights just how important kickers are and makes the Buccaneers decision to select Roberto Aguayo with a 2nd round pick look even more genius.

I don't follow NFL that much but why can't they just break the tie?

I thought whoever scores first whether it's fg or td wins.

This is exactly what I thought. From what I read, I think the NFL had been that way but in a recent season there was a rule change that OT just one more quarter.

This is the worst NFL season.

I know the Pats didn't play their best game today (they still won though), but if the Patriots continue to keep winning with Brady giving excellent performances, the "revenge tour" narrative may bring some vital excitement to the season

The OT rules changed a bit a few years ago. It used to be sudden death, first score wins period.

They changed it to allow the other team to get a possession if the team that wins the OT coin toss only manages a FG. If the game is still tied after *that* possession, it becomes sudden death.

The first two drives in OT resulted in FGs, bringing the score to 6-6, and no one scored again.

They changed it so if you have the ball first and kick a field goal, the other team gets the ball to try and score (getting the ball first and scoring a touchdown still wins the game).

This new approach sounds fair

I only watched parts of it, but I'm glad I tuned in for the shit in OT.

I saw that the game was headed into OT for a 3-3 game. I should have tuned in

The league got sad when Brett Favre's Vikings were beaten in overtime of the NFC championship game because of the sudden death rule. So now they've made it that if the first team with the ball only scores a Field Goal, then the they have to kickoff and the other team gets the ball and has a chance to tie with a field Goal of their own or win with a Touchdown. If its the former, than its proper sudden death, next score wins. Neither team scored after their initial field goals, so they tie.

what is funny is that people are going to say "omfg terrible! this is why viewership is down!"

no. what you have is the nfl/fantasy football has set an expectation of higher scores. high scorin'! that's what people want. the NFL grew their market by roping in a bunch of people who are just casual fans, want to see some TD's, drink some beer, and so on. the hardcore NFL fan very likely enjoyed this throw back game. i thought it was entertaining and the good defense was ACTUALLY good defense, not completely inept offenses that couldn't get out of their own way. yes, both offenses missed some opportunities but it was the defenses that deserve the praise.

the missed fg's at the end though...

I would have rather watched most of the ten MLS games to this honestly.

Fun fact: 2/10 MLS games today were ties, the other eight had 2 or more goals.

So many amazing reaction gifs from this game. Incredible defensive performances aside, I am glad my team's shitshow of a game can at least give back to the internet.

Never trust a kicker!
