Second Sight has some brilliant touches

I've been playing through Second Sight recently, and I'm impressed. The game feels a bit clunky when you're learning all your abilities and trying to understand the aiming controls, but the amount of weaponry and psychic abilities is impressive. The stealth isn't as bad as I thought it would be, and the gunplay is fast and fun. And posessing one enemy to take down his comrades is simply AWESOME.

However, there are two little innovations in the game that are fantastic. The first is third-person sniping mode. Sure, it makes the actual sniping a bit too easy, but man does that little scope in the lower-right hand corner look cool. Sniping in first person mode is also interesting, and a bit more challenging than a traditional video game scope perspective.

The second little touch that I LOVE is the interface of the computers in the game. The computers act like computers, with a GUI with mouse control. In addition to this, there is one particular computer that has a great easter egg.

In one of the earlier levels there is a cut scene where John Vattic kills a security guard. The player is supposed to use the computer to find a map and information on where he should go. However, there is also an icon showing an chat program. If the player clicks on that chat program, the game pulls up an authentic looking chat with the security guard's girlfriend. The girlfriend freaks out since you won't talk back to her, and it's hillarious :lol

So, what did others think of Second Sight? Or does anyone else have some little details in other games that they enjoy?

I enjoyed it, but it had some rough edges (too much slowdown) along with some floaty mechanics. Still, the game was quite enjoyable and featured a suprisingly interesting storyline.

I'm loving it so far (just started playing it last week). I love all the stuff you mentioned. Also, FreeRadical has some really good animators and character designers.

This game was by Free Radicals? They were published by Eidos, then Codemasters and now EA? I didn't know for Codemasters...

I loved the game. I finished it and started right through a second time. I found a lot of new stuff I hadn't seen the first time - and it was a lot more fun since I knew how to use all my powers and stuff.

Not a bad effort for their first third person game. I hope they continue down this development path.

I liked Second Sight, although I disliked the fact that it was too short and that there was really no need for the weapons. I spent most of my game force strangling enemies and hurling them through the air.

(Ok -- I -did- use weapons during the "weapons only" levels... but those levels always seemed like a chore.)

An excellent game, though short and with very little "added value" replay incentive (you can find some very simple shooterstyle arcade minigames, but nothing as full-fledged as the PGR2 shooter Bizarre Creations added as an extra to that game).

However, it is one of those though that you may very well playthrough again just for the storyline (or do a level select) and to screw around with powers and such.

Mine is Xbox version and through 1 1/2 playthroughs saw no slowdown, controls worked great, etc.

I really liked this game. I think it's a tad easy, but at least it makes sense that it's easy. I mean, should it really be hard for a psychic powerhouse like John Vattic to do what he has to do? No, it shouldn't.

This game's story was excellent and built on top of solid gameplay. My only gripe with the whole game is that there is no way to invert your joystick. How the fuck did they miss they? The company only makes FPS games, and they missed this!?

Definitely,at first the lack of invert annoyed me as well. And indeed it was hard to believe that they of all developers didn't include the option.

Edit: note that we're saying there is no "aviation-style" invert option for us to choose

How is Free Radical doing from a business standpoint? I enjoy Second Sight and LOVE Timesplitters: Future Perfect, but I don't think either title sold well. Anyone have some sales numbers for these two games or some information on Free Radical's future products?

I went through it about two weeks ago on the xbox and really enjoyed it. It has an awesome soundtrack! My main problem with the game was that it
gets extremely confusing in the last few chapters. I'm not sure if I unsterstood the story well. If anybody wants to share his thoughts with me, it would be great. What I'm not sure of: is Vattic the good guy or not? And what did acutally happen and what not?

No, none of that happened -- yet. The "real" story is the "flashback" part of the game -- your quest to figure out what the deal is with those kids, as you slowly unlock various powers. At the end, you and the kids defeat the evil guy -- thus preventing the "future" from ever happening. The whole storyline which starts with you escaping from the ward is supposed to be the future... but you change the future by stopping the guy from finishing his experiments on the kids and yourself.

Vattic is the good guy. The 'flashback' levels are the present. The levels apparently set in the 'present' (with Vattic in the Asylum) are actually a premonition Vattic is experiencing based on what will happen if he fails. That's why things keep changing as he remembers them 'correctly'.

I enjoyed Second Sight more than Psi-Ops, and a hell of a lot more than any of the Timesplitters series.
