Sega 3D Classics Wave 2 |OT| October: 3D Sonic 2

Only includes six of the thirteen releases and one of those six is Ecco, which alongside Altered Beast and (likely) Thunderblade are the least remarkable games in the whole collection.

Thunder Blade on 3DS is remarkable for the fact that it is the first time the game has been brought home out of the arcades without the graphics being downgraded, starting with the true scaling.

Edit: the next best thing not counting emulators was this:

Played After Burner II last night and Smash Bros has most definitely fucked my Circle Pad for good. Apologies to the shitty little kid that buys my used 3DS at GameStop.

Anything from the System 32 hardware (Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder, Outrunners) or Model 1 (Virtua Racing / Fighter) might be too complex for M2 to emulate on 3DS. Or not. I don't actually know.

If we're lucky maybe sega will commision n3ds exclusive 3D classics that can take advantage of the extra grunt to do S32 games.

I REALLY want to see Revenge of Death Adder come out in some form, it's criminal that one of the finest arcade games ever made has never seen a console.

Welp, entered that contest for the Sega controller hoodie. I wonder if they'll do more with Fantasy Zone & Outrun.

So is Thunder Blade that got the 3D treatment better than the Genesis one that was on Sonic's UGC? That might be the only game I'll skip out of these wave.

Never thought of that. Would be great.

I want Revenge of Death Adder since it's the TRUE Golden Axe 2.

Turbo OutRun's music is pretty good, just not as catchy as OutRun's. Who Are You? never fails to rock me; it's possibly better than the game itself, and definitely gives me proto-OutRunners vibes. I'd rather get Power Drift than TO simply because you'll have tracks as rippin' as this all while racing atop sprite-based camelbacks and switchbacks.

I have to admit that these versions are my favourite home versions of Space Harrier, Super Hang-On and After Burner II so I can't wait for Thunder Blade and Outrun in particular but I'm yet to buy or really show any interest in the side scrolling stuff. It's not that I don't like them or that I haven't enjoyed them loads of times but having 3D versions of side scrollers just doesn't affect me in the same way.

What do people think of the side scrolling stuff? Does the 3D really add anything to them? love the effect on the "3D" games and I'm absolutely dying to buy Outrun!

Also, I know that nobody else on the planet likes it but me but I'd love a copy of Enduro Racer as they had it in my local arcade when I was a kid and it was the first game I played which the full cabinet and the only home version I've had was the Spectrum version and that didn't quite match up to the arcade experience for some reason.

They also had the full cabinets for OutRun, Super Hang-On and Space Harrier which was enough to fry my brain when I first walked into the arcade to see those lined up in a row. I seem to remember very expensive compared to the "normal" cabinets so playing on them was always a massive treat when it happened.

I don't know if you're lumping Streets of Rage with those other games but it's a game that really benefits from the steroe 3D, I feel. It's not as if people necessarily had trouble judging their position on the screen in 2D, but with 3D on it really does feel natural to line yourself up with the enemies and move around like you're in a little diorama or something.

As for the other games, it's just a nice effect that won't really change how you think about the games. Shinobi 3 looks really cool, just because it's a later game with lots of background layers and other effects that are a good fit for stereo 3D, but it's not gonna change your life or anything.

It is, actually. They said it in an interview, the few guys working on virtual console stopped so that the whole team was focused on making the Gigadrive.

Really? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't wanna trawl through the interviews for confirmation.

Either way, I really don't think the demand is there for more GG VC games and I can't imagine the sales of the existing titles were high enough to justify more, and in a broader sense they seem less interested in VC releases generally.

Just played After Burner II and is it me or has the lock-on window (for the missiles) been made smaller??. I had the game on the 32x and it seemed a lot easier to get the lock-on reticle to appear than it is on this 3ds version!?

Picked this up. Pretty rad, but I fucking suck shit at it. Anyone got any cool-kid tips? I don't think I played a lot of this game back in the day. Also, did anyone else reassign the barrel roll to an actual button? I was just blowing up left and right by having it on the default analog stick.

I'm a big fan of side-scrollers with the 3D effect (when done right). All the M2 games I have seen feel much more enjoyable with the effect - most profound for me might be Sonic & Streets of Rage. Sonic in particular, I thought I literally could never play that game again after all this time and they really went nuts making so many little details pop, I was floored.

Streets almost the same story - it feels a little bit like a 3D Diorama or something, the effect is really remarkable.

Yeah, any tips would be appreciated. I'm not quite sure how to implement the speeding up and slowing down. I think I'm getting a bit better at dodging the missiles though. Isn't the barrel roll stuck on the stick even if you map it to a button? It's pretty damn annoying.

Barrel roll seems intrinsic to plane movement if you bank hard, which makes having the ability to disable Barrel Roll in Settings redundant unless there's a bit I don't know about. Though you lose horizontal control, vertical dodging's possible in a barrel roll to a degree.

Posted this in another thread not realizing there was an OT.

This Tom character is kicking my ass. Is it possible to beat him? I fire a missile at him and it seems like he just fires one from the rear or mine is like bouncing off of him. Takes me down every single time.

This:

Turbo Outrun has never had an arcade perfect home port. Now is the time.

+

This:
If there's a wave 3, I really hope Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2 are part of it. It seems like a crime for M2 to do all these amazing port jobs but have those classics miss out.

...would make me a very happy camper. Getting Outrun is already reason to jump for joy though - having an arcade perfect port of that to play on the go has been a lifelong dream of mine. I'm extremely relieved it is part of wave 2 and that we're getting it in Europe!

(On a side note, I do wish Capcom would consider hiring M2 to do a few of their classics as well. Wouldn't mind having a 3D classic of SF2, Final Fight etc. On that note: why did Nintendo stop their 3D classic series just before the better games would show up?)

Nintendo stopped doing their own 3D Classics because they found that they'd underestimated the amount of work/time required to make them and they didn't think it was worth the effort. Of course, if they hadn't wasted their resources on garbage like Urban Champion they'd probably have gotten a better reception.

Made it to stage 7 on After Burner II today. I think I'm starting to get this game. Killing as many enemies as you can can so there are less missiles flying at your plane seems to be helping a lot. Plus you get that much closer to an extra life.

Just noticed the game starts you off with 3 credits... It would feel wrong to abuse this but the game IS pretty hard.

Also, I can't help but feel this would feel and play a lot better on the Saturn 3D pad. I might get the Saturn version tbh.

I guess I'll mention them here since they're kind of related, but Sega released 2 themes for the 3DS last week in Japan, one of which is the Sega Saturn (the music is Super Sonic Racing!!!) & the other is Sega Mark III, which plays Alex Kidd music.

Hopefully, since Fantasy Zone & Space Harrier got their own themes, we'll see one for games like Outrun & After Burner II.

This series (actually 3D Space Harrier) is the reason I got a 3DS. It's kinda sad how we probably won't ever see these widescreen 16:9-ish updated games on a big screen tv :(

I wish they'd ditch the Genesis / Mega Drive stuff and just do arcade games, especially previously unemulated stuff (or never released outside of Japan, at least). Arcade-to-Genesis ports were decent, but still objectively inferior. Not to mention they've been made available before on dozens of game collections and even virtual console.

Here's hoping we get Turbo Outrun. I need my Rush A Difficulty, M2.

I'm with ya, I consider these system-sellers in terms of quality. Its weird to say that some of the very best 3DS exclusive games are fantastic ports of games that are pushing thirty, but there you go.

Seriously. I'm considering a New 3DS just to play these with more consistent 3D.

After Burner II is really testing my limits so I tried Space Harrier after having not played it for months. I nearly 1cc'd it, it was great. I think one thing Galaxy Force 2 and Space Harrier have on After Burner II is actually having obstacles to dodge. After Burner may have a couple "tunnel" stages, but they are pretty limited...

3D ABII has been getting a bit more exposure than Space Harrier did on enthusiast sites, but I'm not sure how much better it'll sell. I'm contemplating just barreling through it on a lower difficulty in order to unlock Special mode...having that from the start would have made me feel less guilty about ignoring arcade settings, lol.

I just hope people don't start with After Burner 2, think them 3D arcade classics are too damn hard and end up not buying the rest.

AB2 is fantastic, although I admit I haven't played it much. I seem to get to around Stage 8 or 9 and that's about it. Don't like starting from later stages, but I might to see if I can actually see the end of this game for the first time in my life. LOL

Long wait until March for OR!

Yeah really. I just blew through it today so I could enter the giveaway Sega is doing. Special mode is pretty interesting, the lock on area seems much more lenient and you earn extra lives very (very) quickly. Enemy placements are new and the burst meter fills up ridiculously fast so your chances of getting a Game Over are a lot lower in this mode. It is much easier so I might just tackle Special Mode before trying to master arcade. I can only get to Stage 9 on the arcade settings with a single credit.

Did they do or are they planning on doing a Sega 3D Classics version of Sonic 2?

I thought I remembered hearing about that (at least in Japan) a long time ago, but haven't heard a word about it since. That's one of the few games I would LOVE to see get the 3D treatment.

Well, Galaxy Force 2 or Space Harrier?

Galaxy Force is prettier (like, in your face pretty) but Space Harrier is the better game imo.
Consider Super Hang On, the only 3D Arcade that isn't about shooting stuff. A very fun driving game.
Until Out Run.

Super Hang-On is a fun game in its own right and I wouldn't say it's superseded by Outrun or anything, not even musically.

How accurate is the Sega Saturn port of Fantasy Zone? Seriously thinking about getting it to tide me over until FZ 3D is released next month. Plus it'd just be nice to have a faithful version to play on my TV.

If you have a PS3, you can buy the PS2 Sega Ages FZ compilation which contains every game in the series (and almost every version of every game, too) plus FZIIDX and some bonus materials; it's on JP PSN and costs around 800 yen, I think.

these will all be great (except altered beast and ecco), but even when the series is complete I am fairly sure my top recommendations will remain:

Galaxy Force II, Shinobi III, and Super Hang On

After a week of frustrating myself by trying to actually get through the entire arcade mode on the 3 credits available, I finally said fuck it, and used stage select to finish it up. Special Mode is really something else entirely. So worth it. Lol.

No PS3 unfortunately but I do have an import PS2, I should probably just get that, great collection.
