Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

No Beyond Oasis on the last page. Huh. With the other stuff that's become super sought-after, I would have thought Oasis would be a top-shelf item. Still underrated, after all this time.

Here's my take on the game, instead of rehashing what I've already typed up:

BO is a tight game.I played it last year and loved it. Those reused SoR sound effects are kinda jarring at first, but I guess it was done to save resources? Same concept as the shared sound effects in Actraiser and Soul Blazer I guess.

Midnight Resistance is pretty awesome, used to play that all the time with my brother. He wasn't good, so it was always me playing.

First one was okay at best the second one was just mediocre.
They're enjoyable I think. Like I said, they were mainly released to try to compete with the graphics of Donkey Kong, so I think it is notable to see Sega's response. When it came out, I did enjoy it, wasn't great though.
Winning the $10,000 or whatever would have made it a lot better, though
Is 2 better than 3? Because 3, the soundtrack alone makes it worth playing.

Edit: Noquarter, you need to remedy that no play of Thunder Force 3 asap.

Plan on it, just was hoping to find a cheap copy of it and IV, knock both of them out at once.

Beyond Oasis <3 one of my favourite Genesis games. Loved the combat and spirit mechanics and exploration and music. So good. Very short though, and not very difficult, that's about the only drawbacks.

I'm running through ThunderFox in MAME, love the visuals.

On the same note, I kinda wish SunSoft's Contra-esque (and Rolling Thunder-ish) Bay*Route on Sega's System 16B hardware had made its way home.

Nice play on words there with that title. Yeah, it's a fun game. It's bizarre that it was never ported but we could hypothesize that either (A) the game flopped so poorly that Hudson/Sega didn't think it would do well if it was ported or (B) neither Sega or Hudson couldn't come to terms on a home port.

It's easily one of the better Contra ripoffs and predates the features of Contra 3 with selectable weapons and the inclusion of a flame thrower.

Same team did SoR2 and BO (Ancient), why reinvent the wheel I guess.

Hey Sega bros.

I'm starting to realize just how much of the Genesis/Megadrive library I'm not familiar with.

Mind posting your top 10 favorite games, or games you think deserve particular attention?

I looked at a few 'must own' lists, but those tend to focus on all the same games.
I have a high tolerance for games with some issues, but are still great otherwise.

Won't you share with me? Can include PAL or Japanese only games too.

Trying to be unique here and stick to lesser known exclusives:

Adventures of Batman and Robin
Target Earth
Alisia Dragoon
El Viento
Ranger X (get a 6-button pad)
Gaiares
Tinhead
Combat Cars (only played briefly, but it was interesting)
Kid Chameleon
Mazin Saga
Whip Rush

I dunno why Yuzo decided to not make some sort of awesome hip hop arabic theme soundtrack for Oasis series. The first game just seems like sorta Actraiserish but not as good, and the second is mostly ambient noises.

This morning I fired up F22 interceptor for the first time in about 20 years. It's impressive that anyone released a PC-style 3D flight simulator on the MD, let alone EA. Does anyone else here have/remember this? The gameplay's pretty simplistic (fly here, blow something up, rinse, repeat,) but it's impressive nonetheless. Despite being 3d it runs at an impressive framerate - and that's with a fully-functional target camera being rendered in the cockpit view as well.

Electronic Arts strike again with yet another Megagame (if this company was an athlete it would be tested for steroids)!

One of my first Genesis games. Impressive framerate, lol. Single digits often. Still, considering the hardware - it is impressive to a point, I guess.

Why is Slap Fight MD SO expensive?

EDIT: All my Shadow Dancer skills went out the window today :/ On a side note, just got El Viento JP version in today, and its actually pretty cool. Weren't people downing this game?

Dunno, but thats one i'd probably rather have a repro for. Dunno if its pricier than Undeadline , but its more than Alien Soldier and Pulseman.

Yes.

Bought F-22 Interceptor in early '92 (released in '91) and it was a far better game than the much-delayed Genesis/MD version of F-15 Strike Eagle II by MicroProse (which was meant to be out in 1990, didn't release til '92 or '93).

The review was stellar in Gamepro back in the day. Actually, I wanted all things renovation when I was a young nintendo fan without a genesis due to reading the mags out around then.

It runs a bit quicker of you switch to the HUD view, without the cockpit or internal 3d camera. It's also worth remembering the little touches they didn't have to include (like the guys on parachutes.) not bad for a system that wasn't built for 3d gaming in any way, shape or form!

F-15! I had the original version of that on the Spectrum. Is the sequel worth picking up on the cheap, or was it just flat-out terrible?

Thanks for the recomendation! I just got through the 1st level and I really dig it. Hopefully I won't eat my words soon. It's basically Bad Dudes meets the Schwarzenegger flick Commando but done very well I think.

It's impossible for me to talk bad about Beyond Oasis (aside from the soundtrack).
Probably my favorite Genesis game.

Shame the speedrunning community never got into it.

I don't get how the OST is so bad that it derails all BO conversations. If it hadn't been done by Koshiro, would people get as hung up on it?

I think the soundtrack is very interesting. For Beyond Oasis Koshiro had actually seriously studied 20th century orchestral and atonal music, as opposed to just intuitively mimicing movie scores like everyone else. Harmonically it's refreshing and there's lots of dynamic movement in the music that you really didn't hear much in 16-bit game music. There's lots of cool little details to the sound as well. Like the echo of the footsteps are different indoors than they are outdoors.

I guess it's one of those "music for musicians" soundtracks. I really liked the soundtrack for Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance as well, which usually gets a lot of hate. Others who liked it are also musicians.

I would since looking at the graphic quality/art style, you kind of expect a great soundtrack to go along with it, or at least one that stands out. I know this sounds unreasonable, but it would've been nice if it sounded like a pre-etrian odyssey if that makes any sense. Or at least his usual style mixed with an arabic motif.

He did really good with Actraiser music though, so i'm not sure what happened.

I used to rent F22 all the time, I must have played through most of it but I only really remember the first set of missions I replayed hundreds of times.

Since this was before the VR chip I used to be quite amazed at the 3D models and that the game has multiple angles to view from I would have fun just flying fast, using the look at target camera and following a missile in 3D to it's target.

Not a musician, but I thought HoD's score was awesome. You're not alone.

Just bit on JP Vapor Trail after reading about it in this thread. No manual but hopefully I can pick one up later. Unless anyone has one spare?

F-15 Strike Eagle II was a great game in general, but the Genesis/MD port, not so much.

I've played the versions for DOS/PC, Amiga, Genesis and X68000.

F-22 Interceptor was better because it was built for Genesis.

There's also Super Strike Eagle on SNES, and that wasn't a port of F-15 SE II but a game built for Nintendo's 16-bit hardware.

Best Micro Prose game of that era, but never ported to Sega's console: F-19 Stealth Fighter for DOS, Amiga and other computers.

There were ads for that game in the 1989 issues of EGM.

People hate that OST? That's news to me. I was always fond of it, long before knowing who Yuzo Koshiro was. It's very atmospheric.

That's my take. It just seems like whenever Oasis comes up, people bitch about the music and that's it. I just don't get how the game doesn't appeal to more people.

I played and loved the second episode on the Saturn. I can't wait to play the Megadrive one. If the music is so bad it breaks my ears i'll just turn down the volume. The gameplay is still phenomenal.

The first game is more focused and "tighter", I think. And the wider array of moves really makes the combat shine. It's interesting that you played the second game first, though. I wonder how I would view the series if I'd done it that way instead of 1 -> 2.

What's the consensus on Skeleton Krew? It's one of those games where if I played it when I was much younger I would have loved the fuck out of it but today it's just meh to me. It's not bad and has a nice presentation and appropriate music. But the gameplay is just monotonous. I got up to level 3 and was hoping that please just give me a weapon upgrade or a special ability just something to mix it up. This game was just begging for weapon upgrades/pickups.

It's kind of like playing one of the NES Megaman games but you never have access to boss weapons or any special abilities and you don't have a charge shot.

Anyone play Red Zone? I saw some footage on youtube and it looks like a serious graphical showcase / tech demo for Genesis. Not sure if the game is any good though...

Just looked at some clips on YouTube too. It does look impressive technically. Was it ever released in the US?

Edit: read a bit more about this and now I kinda want a copy. Looks like it was released in the US, developed in Boston. The team behind this are from the demo scene so it's going to be technically impressive but play like crap, but I still want it.

I wrote the "world's only Red Zone" faq as a kid. Still on GameFAQs it looks like. LOL. Great game. Those demoscene teams had so much heart.
