I have the opposite. Have a few Sega CD games (Lunar 1 & 2 my bro got for $5 each at a flea market back around early 2003 or so in pretty good condition. Was working at the time, but could have had Ecco 1, Vay, US Sonic CD and a Ram cart for just $20 more if I only had the day off and went with him!!! Keio Flying Squadron I picked up on a whim a few years later for probably $50-65) and JP Sonic CD. Im just a bit hesitant on getting a Sega CD, Model 1 especially to go with my Genesis as well as space reasons. But I will have one eventually.

Did anyone get in on the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works?

Oh good call! I had that on a list at some point.
I see rocket knight for 9.99+free shipping and bimini run for 2.99+4.99 shipping.

How about a shmup?

Edit:
Still Shopping!

So far in my cart I have:

  • Alien Storm
  • Golden Axe
  • Bimini Run
  • Rocket Knight Adventures
  • Galaxy Force 2
  • Skitchin

Kinda iffy on Alien Storm, but it just seems so charming.
You should definitely get:
Sonic 3
Sonic and Knuckles
Streets of Rage 2
Shining Force
Ristar
Contra Hard Corps

got extension cables too, but some controllers seem to be longer than others. I've got one that's super short.
Yes. The ones with Red text on the buttons are way longer than the ones with White text.

Are Konami Justifiers commonly broken? A while back I got the Lethal Enforcers Sega CD big box with it at Goodwill but it doesn't seem to work, even on a CRT.

Elemental Master is still pretty cheap nowadays isnt it? Dont want to choose something expensive. Or maybe we should roll with a beat em up? Not sure how many platformers would be good for a score challenge aside from Sonic, and Ristar is getting pricey I believe.

Does Rocket Knight Adventures keep score? Its been awhile since I played through.

Thanks for the tip.

Seems like this is a cool forum for sega fans. Jumping in now!

Elemental Master doubled in value this past March when Mattei reviewed it, IIRC.
I would love to play it for this, but it might be hard for folks to track down.

RKA does not keep score. No save battery.

Edit: oh, if you were asking if it tracks the score then yes, it's in the status bar at the top.

Thats what the problem was. The system needed a new laser. My Silpheed gives read error at times, but I think thats because its got some scratches.

Man...gems videos strike again. Its kind of a double edged sword...reveals things that you've never played at times...but you gotta jump on em quick. Rocket Knight might be cool then, since you could just pause at 0 lives again. Plus I know thats gotta be cheap.

Kickstarted the Sega history book too, so cant wait for that.

And now for the results of the Shadow Dancer challenge!!

In order of ranking:

Super Shinobi

Baphomet: 1,288,700

2nd

Tain: 931,300

3rd

Galvatron: 716,900

Suggestions are open for the next genre / challenge type!

Thank you for playing!

Woot, Woot!

I have a feeling no one else knew about the trick to get an extra 200k on every boss except the first and last. Kill them with your ninpo with 1 second left on the clock and score massive points.

gg Baphomet. Did you know about the Shinobi Bonus, out of curiosity?

Yes I did. Its easy to get it on the first few stages, but later on it is significantly harder.

yeah i became interested in elemental master about a year ago, and should have bought a copy then.

I think it is actually fairly uncommon as there's probably less than 10 listings at any given time. Only 3-4 last i checked.

I've been trying to get my launch model Sega CD to work and was hoping someone in this thread may be able to offer some insight. The system powers on and reads audio CDs just fine, but when I put in a game, it goes through the licensing screen sequence with Sonic wagging his finger then just goes black. The system remains responsive in that I can hit reset to eject the CD tray, but the game's title screen never loads. These are legit US games that work fine in my X'EYE, so I know the discs aren't the issue. The system does freeze from time to time, too.

Thanks I advance for any words of wisdom!

Amusing side note: I haven't used the system in probably 15 years, but the internal memory still has all my saves! Is that typical?

A friend of my loaned me his Model 1 Genesis while he's in the process of getting his apartment renovated, and I took the opportunity to try the headphones thing out with a game I've been wanting to replay for a while, Lightning Force/Thunder Force IV.

Holy fuckin' CHRIST

I feel like I've been through a religious experience or some shit. That was goddamned amazing. I've been happy with my S-Video modded Model 2, but I need a Model 1 now. I need that headphone jack.

Edit: I'm now a lot more interested in the SHUMP genre. Go figure.

Oh, god, I love Lightning Force. I didn't know it was Thunder Force IV, because I've heard of that series. That was the first shump my kid self played, and it was amazing.

Check out the Sega 16 repair thread first to see if any of that diagnoses the problem.

I haven't been able to find anything on this particular issue, where the system recognizes a game as a game, but doesn't make it to the title screen. The issue with most Sega CDs that fail to read game discs seems to involve the system mistaking the disc for an audio CD--they never even get to the Sonic finger-wagging screen like mine does.

Anyone else remember Xenon 2? It was an overhead shooter. I remember enjoying it a lot but no idea how it really stacked up against others in its genre.

So fucking good.

I agree I finally have a working Sega CD and the prices on the games are pretty high. I don't own any games but I have been playing unreleased or beta / prototype stuff for the system.

You should check out some homebrew stuff, like Sonic Megamix and

Well, check out Sonic Megamix.

Tried Kunckles Chaotix again and man, the level design is terrible. And what is up with the roulette level selection? Sometimes I get the same level twice in a row. I'm not sure what causes that and how to avoid it.

The only Genesis units I ever owned where two of the original model 1 systems that came with Altered Beast, both bought in 1990. I know there are differences between even the model 1s but neither of mine had the lockout chip. Both had "High Definition Graphics" and both had the EXT port in the back.

Sound was always glorious through the headphone jack and through my dad's stereo system.

I always hated the look of the model 2, from the instant I saw it in EGM. Never owned one.

Might need to replace the laser since it sounds like there is nothing wrong with the rotation motor or anything drastic like that.

Id also ask on racketboy and the nintendo/segaage forums. Finding sega cd repair info for very specific issues seems challenging these days.

What's the difference between the Mega Amp mod and the Crystal Clear audo mod? I'm not sure I understand. Both are made to get a better sound off a Megadrive 2 but other than that I don't know how they compare.

I finally got a game to load on my model 1 Sega CD by removing the 32X. The only reason I can think of as to why that would make a difference is that the added weight of the 32X was pushing down on the Genesis and preventing a flush connection between it and the Sega CD. Does that seem plausible?

Also, though I'm now able to get Sega CD games to load, they almost immediately display corrupted video and freeze. That's likely to be dirty connector pins from the Genesis expansion slot or a dirty lens on the Sega CD, no?

Thats another quick check you can do: Q-tip clean the Genesis connector as you would a normal cartridge, and lightly clean the lens.

What's the consensus on Splatterhouse 3? I'm a huge Splatterhouse fan (the reboot was okay, but not my cup of tea, I don't like the new age of QTE/Action games) and not surprisingly I grew up as a big time horror fan so the franchise was a perfect match for me as was Castlevania.

Splatterhouse 3 was the only one that played like a traditional beat 'em up and honestly I think it holds up. The gameplay is on par with that era of beat 'em ups and lakcs the fanciness of Streets of Rage 3 and Comix Zone and it's a shame that the emphasis on weapons was taken away. But it holds up and there's a ton of replayability, the atmosphere and cutscenes are fantastic, and it has multiple endings.

Only thing that sucks about it are some really cheap enemies that just take almost all of your health in one hit and they can break your combo randomly. Plus if you get knocked down the weapon you were holding is immediately taken away. Lame. Otherwise a great game.

Plus it also has Goya's Saturn Devouring his Children and if that's not a sign of quality then I don't know what is.

Haven't played much of the Splatterhouse series (A few minutes of each at most), though Jennifer Has Become a Mindless Beast would take my vote as most terrifying moment in the 16-Bit generation.

Does anyone have a headphone amp plugged into their model1? I was playing last night with headphones directly connected and it was loud and very clear but I noticed some of the highs were a bit too sharp and such.. I was imagining plugging a little amp into it that would have treble/mid/low controls to adjust to my liking.

The quality of the audio out of this thing is shocking though.

The regular combo is too weak, forcing you to always use that special spin move and making the game kind of boring.

Aside from that, it's ok.

the time i spent with Splatterhouse 3, the changes were interesting but man was it mean if you didn't make it to the level's end on time...
