My Ristar and US rocket knight were purchased at Phar Mor when they were going out of business. Still have the stickers and everything... memories...

So I cleaned my bum cartridges last night with that solvent I had and they work perfectly now!
Skitchin' is hilarious.. It's kinda wonky but very obviously made with a lot of love.

Yeah, the farting thing eludes me too. I'm convinced it's just trendy Nintendo snobery at play. I mean there's a real caveat to Genesis' sound in that it doesn't seem to do voices very well. As far as music though, all that really can be said is that it's different.

I think that the highs are higher and the lows are lower when it comes to the Genesis' sound. If you really put the effort in to make it sing, then it sounds amazing. But then there are games like Chakan and X-Men (which I love!) which sound like a nightmare.

It's silly though, as there's tons of bad music on the SNES too. writing off an entire chip based on one or two dodgy games is a bit like writing-off the guitar or violin based on the abilities of one bad busker.

Chakan is just a terrible game in general. I think if you were to dig you could find an equal number of Genesis and SNES games that sound bad.

I have to say I'm really impressed by the sisyphean level of patience shown by the Genesis sound advocates in that other thread.
It's amazing that they're able to still give people respectful rebuttals in the face of arguments from people who obviously haven't touched a HD graphics genesis system to play a good game from a franchise not on the 6-pak in 20 years.

In other news, I decided to finally actually play through Sonic 2 on my own. It's one of those games that's always been there in my genesis library, but never really garnered enough interest to play for the hours it would take to get it done. Hooked it up to Sonic and Knuckles for good measure, did a bit of gliding, and managed to get Super Knuckles. Also equally determined to wrap up Lightning Force and had a pretty good run at that last night...Both are definitely worth the fuss of getting my JAMMA/MVS Genesis going with that stereo sound.

Same goes for SNES. Not every song turns into golden notes just by virtue of being on the SNES. A lot of it can just sound especially muffled and indistinct.

Interestingly, the opposite might actually be the case for the SNES: the more advanced and demanding your arrangement, the more headaches you were going to run into trying to get the SPC to pull fresh samples on the fly.

Speaking of games with poor sound, any love for LHX Attack chopper? It seemed quite natural at the time, but its amazing just how many 3D sims were released on the Megadrive. Especially since they showed, quite early on, that the 3 button pad just wasn't going to cut it.

That's my favourite flight sim on the system. I had great fun with one of my friends, blowing up camels and seeing how damaged we could get while still making it home. It's a bit dumbed down compared to the PC version but the slow pace of helicopter combat made it a good fit for the low framerate on the Mega Drive. I was always disappointed that while we got a port of F-15 Strike Eagle II we didn't get a port of Gunship 2000. Just that crap shooter pretending to be Gunship.

I'll be honest, the whip sound effect in Super Castlevania 4 is one of the reasons why I don't like it. That sound effect is so fucking annoying. Almost makes my ears bleed.

Most sound effects in early Konami SNES titles are pretty bad. I don't mind the whip in question though. It's the Contra 3 sounds that really bother me.

Galaxy Force 2 just showed up!! I'm excited for this one. Its in excellent condition too!
I told myself when I decided I was gonna start a collection that I was going to go cartridge only because its way more sane.. but the Galaxy Force 2 cartridge looks so damn sick. I'm sure the box is to die for.

Some more recent games I've gotten for the Genesis that I've liked,

Phelios - a vertical mythology-based shooter from Namco
Contra: Hard Corps
Castle of Illusion
Sunset Riders
Dashin Desperadoes
Rocket Knight Adventures

Can anyone accurately give pros/cons on the genesis versioen ofrece sparkster versus the SNES
There are 2 different sparkster games for mega drive anda there is also snes sparkster
All 3 games are unique and different games and there is no version of the sparkster game on the mega drive just some iterations of the saga.

Good pick ups though, glad you finally nabbed Predator 2. Seriously needs to be on everyone's hidden gems list.

appreciate it whenever you get around to it man, and yeah took your recommendation & got it in a lot with a CIB Willie Beamish cause ive wanted to replace my original Sega-CD collection, down to just Wonder Dog (Mzo's favorite) now

pretty sure i have my original Genesis games back (well, PS IV needs the cardboard box & manual one day) so it's down to just replacing my SMS ones sometime, should be a bit easier

Well anyway, I'm going to play some Galaxy Force II. :p

don't worry man, i've been told Super Thunder Blade, ESWAT, Moonwalker & others aren't good cause the system couldn't handle a proper port, but they're still enjoyable games for me!

The 15 minutes of Galaxy Force2 I played were pretty bitchin. Was not a fan of the inverted controls. I kept flipping in and out of this weird perceptual space.. depending on my focus I could actually perceive the scene as a 3D space.. or as just the 2D mess that it is.
Its a fun novelty. I'm glad I bought it.

Cyberball is growing on me, its a good thing the music is great. Rocket Knight Adventures is really really fantastic. I feel so burnt I didn't play it as a child. Kinda not wanting to play it until I get my display situation figured out though.

My Bimini Run cartridge doesn't work tonight. :[ After some cleaning it worked last night. Oh well. Thats actually the cartridge that has a childs script "Kevin" on the label.. so fuck Kevin.

Skitchin is cool. Its actually a serendipitous catalyst for good conversation between myself and a coworker that is kinda introverted and weird. I brought it up randomly as a fluke and apparently her brother had the game when they were kids.. and he played in a shitty grunge band that she always thought sounded exactly like the skitchin soundtrack. Which was a pretty mindblowing revelation, to be honest. Apparently they had the Sega Channel too!

I'm having a lot of fun with the Genesis so far. I've even been playing with an IR controller and its been just fine. I'm gonna buy a variety of first party pads in the future I think. Just to have some nice variety.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Revenge of Shinobi are still in the mail

yes - it definitely seems much more suited to the MD hardware than the likes of F22. I love the fact they took the time to model destructible camels (take THAT Peta.) The randomly generated campaign was a really good idea to. Even if some of the missions make no sense.

Yeah it's not close to the arcade at all, and I actually think i MIGHT prefer the Master System version (is that perverse?), but I think the Megadrive version is still quite playable. I LOVE the soundtrack - I'm currently working on a jazzy version of Alone Fighter.

EDIT: And Happy 25th anniversary Genesis! (I can't believe the European 25th anniversary is over a year away. Pre internet release schedules are bonkers)

Happy 25th birthday/anniversary Sega Genesis! Since we're sharing pics, here's my baby, playing a classic (Excuse the crap phone pic):

I noticed some humming though, and I think it has to do with my Headphones jack at the front of the console: I tested my other model 1 (Non HDG, terrible sound), and there was no buzzing with the same cable.

So, I cracked them open!

Even though it looks like a plug, the cables are actually soldered on, so it's not just an easy switch of the two headphones jacks.

What would you guys recommend? Is there anything I can do besides a new "Stereo output" mod?

Thanks!

Happy birthday to the amazing Genesis. As a european, I dont quite feel I can join the celebration, but I have used the opportunity to invite some friends over tomorrow for some Mega Drive-fun-

There's just an amazing amount of ignorance about the Genesis in general. Hell even if they played Revenge of Shinobi that shows more knowledge than many SNES fanboys in those threads.

Nintendo fans are somehow still butthurt over that generation's console war for some reason. I feel like most Sega fans are over it. I have no reason to deny that the SNES was an amazing system. Maybe its reflective of Nintendo's current troubles that people feel like they need additional justification of Nintendo's glory days.

^agreed, that's gotta play a factor. it's been super disappointing watching even regulars on retronauts go on about the "timeless" quality of SNES perfection while saying the arcade-y genesis greats are stuck in the 90's....i mean, these are some of the more knowledgable people, you expect better than AVGN stuff.

a few nintendo hardcore admitted in an older thread they never got over how insulted they were by Sega's aggressive marketing at the time, which after reading Console Wars is hilarious. they grew their market share from 4% to like 65% in a few years, and did things like focus on backwards compatibility (despite that small market), push for older demographics, fostered western studios/development long before xbox, create the ESRB (allowing more room/less censorship) and a way out for devs stuck under nintendo's oppressive late 80's/early 90's monopoly. While sony clearly took that ball & ran with it, it's fascinating how much their influence is taken for granted - Playstation Now from Sega Channel, X-Box Live from Sega Net, etc.
