Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

That is a lot of good games for little money. I wounder how they are listed on steam account. As the packs or as the individual games. That would be 50 more games just on my list.
They're listed as 1 entry for the emulator they all run on called SEGA Genesis & Megadrive Classics. All the games are listed as DLC for that entry.

Ah I see, cool.

It's only $3 so don't know why I am debating it so much, but I already own physical copies of most of the games on that that I want.

After years of searching I found a copy of the "Batman" version of Revenge of Shinobi, all nice and minty complete in box :)

I must have played through about 6 different copies I picked up at different times to find it.

Some other favorites:

Starflight <-- Granddaddy of Mass Effect
Star Control
Populous
Ghouls n' Ghosts
Phantasy Star Series (yes, even 3)
Strider

heck, I could go on and on mentioning all the games everyone else mentioned.

I know, her is the absolute worst Genesis game I love: Sword of Sodan.

Did they change the red accent color on the Model 1 units or does it fade over time?
I dug my two Model 1 Genesises out of storage last night, because I couldn't remember what I had (I use an X'eye as my main console). One is a High-Def Graphics non-TMSS (that's the good one, right?) and the other isn't. Look at the red by the power light and "16-bit". It's much duller on the non-TMSS unit.

They made the Genesis in a bunch of places, so that could be part of it. They also changed the paints they used sometime before or during the V6; early Genesis models have a two-tone logo. There's grey AND white in there to give it a semi drop shadow thing. I don't think it's faded so much as it's a different paint.

So I finally got my copy of Soleil after the seller sent me the wrong game (and sent Soleil to someone else, who took their sweet arse time forwarding it on to me).

Is there a known main character name? Right now I'm just enjoying the music here, not sure if there is a protagonist default name or if I have to entirely make something up.

Edit: Corona?

Bought some Steam collection for some reason. I guess I didn't feel like fussing with emulators. I don't know why I did it.

But I'm glad I did because I just futzed around with Beyond Oasis and I have to say... this game is pretty good.

I had fun playing Golden Axe and Streets of Rage 1+2 today when I realized those are my only beat-em-ups on Genesis. What are some other Genesis beat-em-ups I should check out? Besides Golden Axe II and SOR3 I can only really think of TMNT:Hyperstone Heist.

Sonic and Streets of Rage were instant classics for me when I played them at my cousins when I was younger.

Shining Force came in later and that was a treat as well.

I am glad I was able to get all the games again via Steam from that recent sale on Amazon :p.

Same here! Although its a pretty damn good deal still!

Cyborg justice was very fun at the time with the mix and match action.

Comix zone also has its supporters for something a bit different.

Those are the best BEUs on the system, though Final Fight CD is a must-have and Splatterhouse 3 is a pretty good single player somewhat non-linear BEU (though I prefer 2 which is more of an action platformer more than a true BEU, like the original). The other decent ones are Cyborg Justice, Spider Man/Venom: Maximum Carnage, the arcade conversions of The Punisher, Growl, Captain America and the Avengers, and Double Dragon 1. Mazin Saga also has half of its gameplay structured like a BEU, but it's a bit of a repetitive slog even beyond the typical BEU levels of repetition.

Boy, I'm glad you asked that. I fucking LOVE Beat 'em Ups. They could be my favorite game genre of all time (either Beat 'em Ups or fightan games and maybe oldschool FPS) so I have more than a few suggestions to make:

Comix Zone. Buy this. Don't look up reviews or anything just get it. One of the greatest Genesis titles and a DAMN good and also unique Beat 'em Up. Another game that's 90's as fuck but in a good way.

Splatterhouse 2 and 3. If you like Horror games than you should check these out. If not I would still recommend checking them out if you can get them cheap.

Alien Storm. Made by the same group of developers who made Golden Axe. Doesn't play too much like Golden Axe and it's a little bit easier. Very fun game worth checking out.

Streets of Rage 3. But make sure to get the Japanese version, it's far superior. Amazing Beat 'em Up. Demands to be played but only the Japanese version.

Batletoads and the Double Dragon. Pretty good game, has worse sound when compared to the SNES version but otherwise they're identical.

Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan. The curve ball. An unlicensed Chinese game. It's actually a pretty good Beat 'em Up worth checking out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSNGbi3M478

There's a port of The Punisher that might be worth checking out. It's not nearly as good as the Arcade version but it's okay as a home port.

The original Battletoads is also on Genesis, but my understanding is you're better served with the NES original for that one.

Insofar as you can possibly be well-served by Battletoads.

Thanks for the beat-em-up suggestions...
Comix Zone - I remember thinking this looked neat but I had already moved on to 32-bit systems when it was released - I'll have to give it a try
Splatterhouse 2+3 - I never played the original in the arcade until last year - it's OK but hasn't aged all that great in my opinion, maybe 2+3 are a bit better
SOR3 - I remember playing this for 5 minutes, thought the robot Dr. character was garbage but that's about it. If I pick up the Japanese version do I just have to take it out of the case to fit it in my Genesis to play?
Final Fight CD - rented it back in the day, great game

You might like Splatterhouse 3 more. It plays more like a traditional Beat 'em Up while the 2nd game plays more like the 1st. It's pretty hard but it has passwords and it's really only hard if you're trying to get the best ending that doesn't effect gameplay.

I'm pretty sure there's converters for Japanese carts that you just plug into the cart and you're good to go. My dad bought me one back in the day so I could play Toki
And Ultraman...

After some brief research it looks like later JP MegaDrive games like Bare Knuckle 3 are region locked. I believe Game Genie will work in that case. Looking at the eBay prices for Bare Knuckle 3 and it's not cheap though :( Everyone says emulators but unless it's a slow paced game there's no substitute for the Genesis controller.

Seriously what is it with the seller KITTEN1CAT on eBay, his games are well represented in the pictures but all his games just seem to go for stupid money when compared to the same games in similar condition from other sellers on eBay.

Currently £109 wtf!?

you got your url tag mixed up

also it's kind of cool how the box art for Probotector has the title screen background as its own background

a shame about everything else, though

oh also apparently the bidder l***r is the one that drove up the price of the bid for both of those games, so there's your likely answer

Here's Probotector for instance

Currently £102 wtf!?

Pirates Of Dark Water

£113!!!!....i bough this game complete 2 weeks ago for £19!!!!

Just a follow up on this, Probotector ended at £190.16!!!!!!!, Pirates of Dark Water £117.00 and Mega Turrican ended at £135.56!.

That is just ridiculous prices what the hell man, not sure what lure this seller has to cause bidders to be idiots with their prices!!!

Now that I beaten Shinobi 3 recently, Revenge>Shinobi 3 IMO when it comes to level design and music. Best song in Shinobi 3 is Whirlwind, but Revenge has Chinatown, Over the Bay, Labyrinth and Like a Wind.

Maybe he's a shill bidder. All you need is a couple of uniformed dummies seeing a game jump up in price and immediately their interest is peaked.

Finally won a bid on Air Buster! Loooooove that game, even if its a bit on the orthodox side.
That's a pretty apt descriptor for Air Buster. It's a solid shmup that I don't think does anything extraordinarily. But I gotta say: I absolutely detest how it sprays out the power-ups. Trying to snag the one you want is particularly annoying in 2-player mode.

I just picked up Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie last week. I haven't played it yet, but it looks like it'll at least be decent. Gives me some SoR vibes.

I like The Punisher, but last time I checked it's gotten rather pricey. But I find Growl on the Genesis to be painfully dull.

No doubt about it. But Ninja Step and My Lover from Revenge.. oh lawd ♥

Btw, ebay UK can be a pretty great place for NTSC-U games. CIB Revenge of Shinobi ver. 1.0 for 15$? Yes, i'll take that. $15 Castle of Illusion and $30 Shadow Dancer is pretty great too.

Also, best way to play Japanese games on a US Genesis? I own 2 imports (Phantasy Star 1 MD version and MWIV) Someone told me you need to actually modify each individual cart... I'd rather not do that.

It would be smarter to cut the cart slot on the system rather than than mutilate each cart.

I think Game Genie works if you don't want to do any modding. Some games specifically have software region lock but you can bypass with codes.

Game Genie requires no modification, but it's pretty annoying inputting huge codes just to get region locked games going. I've used this method for all my Mega Drive imports and haven't had any issues.

The most convenient way is a region mod and a shaved cart slot. It's not an expensive procedure, either.

the most convenient way is to own systems & games from every region, also homes in said respective regions for proper wattage & fear of breaking archaic laws

Having switches on the console allows for a little more flexibility. JP Gunstar Heroes has the English ROM on the cartridge but is only compatible in JP and PAL modes (not US). If you start the console in PAL mode but switch it to US after boot then you get English in proper 60hz.
