Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I've been playing Alien Soldier on the Wii VC. Carts go for ridiculous prices so fuck that.

Man, what crazy game. Really pushing the Mega Drive to the max.
Speaking of which, my copy just arrived today. The first physical Mega Drive/Genesis game I've ever bought (got to start somewhere, right?).

Today, I also picked up a Model 1 Genesis, Contra Hard Corps, Sonic & Knuckles, and Shadow Dancer. Now I need a Game Genie, so I can actually play Alien Soldier.

i think you still have to enter codes with the Game Genie. See if you can find a Magic Key III or Nitro Adapter; they are better options.

Had no idea the Genesis version of Sunset Riders was at that res along with all The Simpsons games on that system.

Finally found Quackshot at a garage sale and played through it. This game is really good!

Went to Irishninja's place and messed around with the Mega Everdrive. Now I want that goddamned Sailor Moon beat-'em-up and of course it's expensive.

I have the second one on SFC because it has co-op.
TBH, it's not very good; I just like the license.

I wish the arcade beltscroller by Gazelle got a home port to like, PS1 or Saturn. I'd totally buy that in a heartbeat.

$155 US, which is about the going rate for a CIB Japanese copy last I checked.

Yeah. I'm fine with my VC version lol. Cart looks nice.

It is, right?

I remember renting, but the rental cart was defective since it didn't output sound. Very strange.

Yeah I just went through this on MAME not too long ago. Those huge Arabian Fight-style animations for supers are the shit, sonnnn.

Agreed. I wish more games were just insane boss fight after boss fight. It really had gorgeous sprites too.

I wish I it came out on a real cart in the US.

It is bad that I love the music on Genesis more than SNES?

Yes, SNES had much better, quality sound - top notch in every way, but there's something charming and identifiable GENESIS about those old games.

The tinny dance beats of Streets of Rage, the slow funk "POCK" sounds of Kid Chameleon...actually "POCK" was a sound I found in a lot of old games - the default punching noise I think. I remember Tyrants, during building phases, that was all you heard as your cavemen built a tower: "POCKPOCKPOCKPOCK".

SNES is far, far from top notch in every way and has plenty of problems of its own, arguably even worse problems than the Genesis with how common it is with badly tuned samples, and tuning is a pretty fundamental thing you ought to get right in music. Feels kind of ironic really that on average people will say SNES sounds better, but the more musically trained you are the less you like it when everything starts sounding out of tune.

Both have some garbage soundtracks, both have some killer soundtracks.

Leave it at that.

On a related note I've been playing lots of Mark III games with FM module support. Makes the Master System sound like a Mega Drive!

Have SNES/Genesis debates ever led to anything other than reductive narratives and sweeping generalizations?

I swear this happens every time the topic comes up.

It's kind of hard not to sound reductionist without writing an essay's worth of information on how things work and why stuff sounds the way it does.

So be it, but this thread is about the Genesis, not SNES vs Genesis. GAF has those from time to time, and they're entertaining, but this isn't the place for it.

I always felt that Genesis games had better music...

There's a lot bias in the gaming press about the Genesis's capabilities. I guess most of these writers were Nintendo fans.

Looking back though the Genesis was a marvel of engineering for the time--ultra crisp RGB native output still amongst the best after all these years, 68k processor that was pushed for nearly a decade, and great sound chip and sound capabilities.

I loved both systems, but Genesis seemed to be more future proof looking back.
