Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Tonight was a good night, Traded one of my spare n64's for a pretty great condition HD model 1 genesis + sega cd model 2(and all the extenders and metal bits) and a official six button, so I'm pretty happy about that :)

That's a damn good deal. The Sega CD alone with all the parts would be worth like double what a good N64 can get.

Oh man...Did pretty good on Ebay and Amazon recently (I think anyway) in Genesis, SNES, and NES. Paired with the other stuff I got from a bonus + rewards points earlier, I think im done buying stuff for abit. Time to get in some time with games again.

Pick ups:
Crusader of Centy
Gargoyle's Quest 2
Demon's Crest
Splatterhouse 3
Air Buster
Sword of Vermillion (thats right)

CoC is the only one thats arrived so far, and glad that all the old saves are still on there. Game looks and sounds alot better in person. Super fast and responsive.

Blowing through your tax refund or win the lotto or something? Some heavy hitters there.

Yeah, split up tax refund for necessary stuff, entertainment, and the rest in the bank.

Splatterhouse 3 was reward points, so no money there. Air buster I lucked up and won for like 6 bucks. The other 3...got for a decent bit under their "usual going price" but yeah. Gaming budget is spent for awhile.

Nice pulls.

Honestly, it makes me sad that Sword of Vermillion gets disparaged so much (except for its OST, and rightly so). It's UI a bit clunky, but I feel that its actually a pretty decent/fun action RPG. It offers a nice challenge (especially if you try to beat it at less then max level, my lowest level win was level 23). Story wise it reminds me slightly of DQ VIII (in that both approach their narrative like a fairy/folk tale and are kind of episodic with each chunk of quest, but with an overarching goal).

Atomic runner chelnov is one of my all time favorite genesis games. it's an early play on the endless runner genre mixed with contra. Wicked art, tight gameplay, good soundtrack.

Ok havent gotten to Fatal Labyrinth yet but Atomic Runner is SOOO GOOD.

It is similar to other endless runners (not even sure if that was a genre at the time, or if this was one of the pioneers), but I'd argue it is better than it's modern day counterparts.

This is why I love Genesis. SNES will always be closer to my heart because it was my first console and I grew up with it and I only had limited time with Genesis in those years, but Genesis has all these games I've never heard of that end up being pretty damn good.

Like everyone knows Sonic, Golden Axe, Shinobi, etc. But few seem to know about games like Atomic Runner or Galahad (another game I enjoyed after discovering it a few months ago for cheap). Maybe it is because Sega doesn't make consoles anymore so it has fallen out of the public consciousness, which perhaps has also helped keep prices mostly lower than SNES.

I remember Atomic Runner being decent (I have literally not played it in over 20 years, I did beat it back in the day, though). Fatal Labyrinth is pretty decent as well.

I picked up a Game Gear today and some common games, but the screen doesn't work right. It either shuts off immediately or the screen has lines in it. I got it with the Battery Pack and I picked up Sonic 2 and Super Columns to test it out. Anyone have any advice?

Also, one of the local stores in my area has a complete in box Master System. Not sure if it has all the inserts or anything but it's only 100 bucks. Worth it?

Is that tough or decently beginner friendly? I haven't taken anything apart recently and wouldn't know where to begin (besides the obvious, Youtube...haha).

It's definitely not beginner friendly. Capacitors are an arduous pain to replace on something larger (like a Turbo Duo) but they're trickier on something like a Game gear where everything is small. Find a pro, if you can.

It's relatively easy to take apart, but it's a portable system so everything is a bit cramped. But more than being able to open it, do you know how to solder?

So it turns out the cheap Upscaler that people are bringing up... the Adam Koralik special...
$_35.JPG

May actually not even be upscaling RGB. It's probably upscaling composhit.

If that is the case, we should never speak of this box here again in the sense that its irrelevant to RGB and scaling done right.

That doesn't shock me at all. I bought that thing before I had an XRGB Mini, and it looked awful even before I'd seen the light.

Maybe I'm crazy, but that's my favorite 50-cent used Genesis game this side of NHL 94, and because of it, I did know all of that stuff. I am really curious to try that arcade version sometime.

Go, Opa-Opa menu cursor!

Fatal Labyrinth is great, but yeah, it often gets overlooked. If I'm not mistaken, in Japan it was a small MegaNet downloadable title to begin with, then ported to cartridge in North America as a budget title. I believe that the idea was thrown around of releasing it as a Virtual Console title on Wii (I think it got rated by the ESRB?), but it never materialized. Sega probably figured it to be really plain looking and a bit unintuitive to have to charge the same $8 as every other Genesis VC title.

P sure it was released on VC as I played it there.

Didn't think it was that good butthen again I had played more complex roguelikes on pc before.

Yeah, I dunno what it is with the art style change in this game and Lost Vikings 2 but I also prefer the original look to it. It's still a really fun game to play, though.

Ah... sweet, sweet memories -- Sega Genesis aisle at Toys R Us in 1990:

This isn't my video, but it must be fate or something that I would see it, today.
On this day exactly 25 years ago, I got Phantasy Star II at my own local Toys R Us.

Now this is mine. Sales receipt from my purchase, April 17, 1990.

IRuXePF.jpg

The $62.00 is store credit for a game I got from the free mail-in offer that I 'returned' unopened.

So! I only had to shell out 24 bucks for 16-bit Phantasy Star II -- 6 megs + battery back up *and* 116 page hint book...

...And all the bittersweet memories.

It upscales RGB. Game-Tech doesn't know what he's talking about from the comments.

Judging from the comments, it looks like that device takes the video from either the RGB lines or the sync line depending on the input voltage.

Still sounds like another reason to avoid it all the same.

The cable should be wired correctly to begin with, but its probably because he's using Tims cable that is far from being wired to the scart standard.

Well yeah, but sometimes the end user isn't so lucky.

The person who installed my NESRGB forgot to hook up the +5V pin to the AV port. If I ever get off my lazy ass and learn how to solder, I expect that to be a trivial thing to fix, and I don't need it for anything in the meantime, but it might matter when using something like that.

I grew up in Nova Scotia. We didn't get Toys R Us around here until well after it was important to me. Travelling to Maine or New Hampshire and visiting the TRU video game wall was something my brother and I looked forward to every summer. Such great memories.

I'll cross post these and people will probably get annoyed, but there's a great new retro game store in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I did photography for them a few weeks ago, and their prices / selection are fantastic. They don't have a ton of Genesis stuff comparative to Nintendo, but they do have a selection of Master System things.

Yes, that was the actual price on a really nice (open) Tron Bonne. Alas, it is already sold.

love the PS2 tribute (i got mine around then too) but woooooo did this pic take me back...

i was staying in san fran around..05? and stumbled upon a TRU with aisles still like this, and shit blew my mind. i used to run around the block with a friend to train for this nickelodeon run for fun or whatever contest where you could keep whatever you put in your cart, but you only had like a minute or two, haha...i used to plan how to grab every ticket

also the aisles in mine -even the small SMS, then genesis section - had nintendo guides, high score statues etc all over the floor. no respect! haha

i had a plush bubsy from a contest in the day....no idea where he went but haven't seen one since

Man, I wish there was anything remotely like that where I live. I don't think there is a single store selling retro stuff in my entire country, and nothing online or on ebay either :(

If I want to buy anything retro it means buying online from overseas and paying international shipping.

Genesis boxes were always the coolest.

The retro vector boxes:

The new red boxes:

EA games, which meant QUALITY and respect for the creators!

Not to be that guy, but I live in a rural village about 45 minutes from the nearest large city and we actually have a retro game store. :p Way overpriced though (guy buys his games off ebay, then adds 10%), but it's weird and crazy that it exists in such a small fucking town.

It needs voltage to pin 16 on the scart to switch from Composite to RGB

Yeah, he made a follow up regarding all that. https://youtu.be/WtWa3FZoZo0

So it actually can upscale RGB if there is voltage on that pin. Would this be an issue common enough for people to be concerned about whether of not if they actually are getting RGB out of this box?

It also seems he took notice of the lag on it too.

I really hope his HDMI thing works out since he seems to be pushing it hard. I mean I admit that it is a simplified solution that will work with the "masses" who don't want to learn all about sync and what not, but it still has it's own limitations so far.

Such as? Not being a smart ass, I'd like to hear what you might think is problematic.
