Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

It wasn't cheap but I finally picked up a game I've been dying to play on original hardware for a long time. Gotta say it's a game changer, the game looks and feels amazing through SCART RGB. Easily one of the best and most fun (once you get used to the controls) 2D action games ever made.

Ive got the PAL release of Alien Solider, was the PAL version 50hz optimised at all??

It wasn't. Which makes me curious about the digital/Steam release of Alien Solder. I'm going to assume it's based on the translated PAL version, but I have no clue if they changed the ROM to make it run correctly.

I'm still not getting the transformation scene. I mean my copy looks legit in every way. Do you think I maybe have some weird rare cart where that was omitted? I can't think of any other reason why that would happen.

It seems to happen randomly in legit Japanese copies. Can't find any solid info on English sites. Maybe some Japanese person could help out on this one.

I found the answer in a comment on a youtube video of just the transformation.

"WRONG!, I have the Japan version and the reason why is cause he might have died, if you die once anywhere in the train parts this scene won't show, a little way of saying "nice job."

So there you go! I gotta not die before next time!

Nice detective work. That makes sense, then (I've never seen it either, lol.)

Due to unforseen circumstances I am without a TV for the next few months. I really wanted to play my new Wily wars so I went out and splashed some more cash.

The screen really sucks but it's a neat little toy

Wait, you skip the transformation scene in Alien Soldier by using a continue? Weird, I'd like to skip the scene in single credit clear attempts.

Back when I was at EGM I rated Chrono Cross 9.5, while the other two reviewers gave it a 10. Thus, it missed a platinum award by .5.

Mark MacDonald jokingly wrote in the magazine to send all email to my address, which lead to years of hate mail and death threats for being the guy who cost a Square game a platinum award.

I got it for $110 with like 12 games of varying quality. That's not really the point though, it's not that I couldn't afford a TV, it's just I'm unable to have one right now. I'm living in an apartment that isn't my own and only have some space to myself.

Haha, that's hilarious. Especially considering attitudes about the game nowadays you'd think the only good thing about the game was its music. A 9.5 seems like a pretty good score in that context. =P

Greg trying to hype up his eventual feature for Sonic on Generation-16 for real.

Didn't you say you were going to revise the resolution numbers for the comparison chart?

The sound channel numbers are also off when you're not factoring in the complementary sn76489 chip, which brings the total number of channels up to 9/10 (depending on if you want the third square channel to control noise pitch or not).

Mostly just trying to make it as concise as possible on a single screen. The Max Res isn't necessarily the resolution most games used, but it's still the max res, right? I could have broken up the flow to call out the various exceptions and tricks that may have been used on either system to raise their various capabilities.

But the section was already running really long, so I decided to go with what appear to be the accepted base stats for both systems to illustrate the point that the SNES had superior audio/visual capabilities back in 1990.

Ahhh.......dont feel bad its karma for the GameSpot review getting a 10 'Perfect' score when it shouldn't have done!!! Man Jeff was pissed!!!

The key to him is that he never goes more than three bounces without doing a big bounce, so you can always time yourself to pass underneath him.

That bid is insane. There's still deals to be found though, I just picked up a complete copy of Flashback for $9 CAD. Just gotta dig, and jump if you see something at an even remotely decent price.

There must have been at least two of them to get it that high.

If you look at the bids, you can see it was a bidding war between just two buyers. The third highest bidder topped off at around $300.

All it takes is for only two stubborn people to really want the same thing.

Found these on Gumtree. Have been looking for a boxed Sonic 3 for months, and this guy had a super nice copy for a reasonable price.
Really looking forward to sitting down with all of these games for the first time/the first time in nearly 20 years.

Some Australian editions are just weird. Grey cartridges, really?

Yeah, it's super weird. I honestly didn't know about the Silver cartridges until very recently. Apparently it was some weird decision by OziSoft when they were distributed Sega here. Nobody seems to have an answer as to why they did it.

Yeah.

MUSHA and Wild Guns being available on VC should shut anyone up about digital availability diminishing the value of a legit hardcopy lmao.

Nice gets all around. I think Granada is really solid for a Wolfteam game. shame it never got a sequel or anything. I am curious how the X68k version compares.
Forgot to reply regarding Granada. If i remember correctly, Game Sack did a short comparison between the two versions in their X68k episode. The X68k version seemed a bit more sluggish/slow to me but had slighlty better sounding music. Also, the background in stage 2 had more scrolling layers. Great game overall (at least on the Genesis)!
