Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Fuck yeah! Finally did a 1CC of The Adventures of Batman and Robin! I only lost two lives: one against Mad Hatter, and another against Mr. Freeze.

I feel like I've just scaled my own personal Everest.
Excellent job, I hope to 1CC in the future.

I guess the only remaining challenge (since there's no difficulty levels) would be to do a 1CC with only the basic, unupgraded Batarang. But that would be pure masochism so I doubt I'll do it.

The key to beating the game is to upgrade the green weapon to max and never lose it (should be at full power by the end of the second segment of stage 1.) Also, a lot of people don't seem to know about the hidden 1-ups; you can get one almost immediately at the beginning of stage 1 by clearing 5 purple guys on the upper deck with a single charged Batarang. And on the following segment, there's a column of those flying helicopter things that will drop a 1-up if you destroy all of them before they move downward. Also, lots of people underestimate how useful kicks are. They've got three major uses: first, the quickest way to move is by holding Down and mashing the jump button. Second, this technique is very good for killing stronger enemies; those big clowns in stage 1, for instance, are pretty much harmless if you just kick them to death. Third, jump kicks are extremely handy for avoiding attacks because they extend your time in the air (a double-jump without the additional height, more-or-less.)

Once you get a maxed-out green weapon and use your kicks a lot, it's just a matter of memorizing enemy patterns. Though, truth be told, I never got good at the Mad Hatter fight; my key to beating him was to take him out with the green weapon before the more difficult phases could begin. That fight can easily use up all of your lives if you have a weapon at suboptimal power; undoubtedly the hardest boss in the game.

Grats, man! It's cool how many of us here have put in attempts and beaten a game that so many people like to exaggerate as impossible. Hard, no doubt, but yeah holding on to that green power up is the key.

YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!

After my mentioned hatred for the jet pack controls I was overjoyed to know, that was how you fought the freeze.

I wasted 3 continues on Hatter but that was mainly because I couldn't get the pattern down with the wall of cards. What an awesome boss battle, much more impressive than the final and I'm glad Phediuk mentioned hitting the hat, because I need that extra life for Freeze. I would rank that last level as the second easiest which was a surprise considering the difficulty in parts of the hatter levels.

Now to finish of Bloodlines.

I'm going to have a vid of that game in the future, but even though the green is important I still use the orange one like half the time since it's not garbage like the blue one.

So what kind of government lists to I get put on and how much of my identity is theft'd if I buy hilarious ROM hack cartridges on eBay that come from Russia?

My boss/fellow Sega collector does it constantly (he is a pirate cart collector) and so far he has been pretty safe. Found some really great, weird stuff out there (just got a Taiwanese Mallet Legend controller)

I've wanted a copy of Top Fighter 2000 MK VIII ever since I saw it on display at Super Potato in Akihabara on a TV with a hand-written sign above it with only '?????' over a decade ago.

On your advice I will take my chances then, comrade.

As an owner of a reproduction cart of it, you won't regret it.

Is it a good game? Kind of want to try now...

Its a solid puzzle-esque title. You switch between Pocahontas and Meeko to overcome different obstacles, and also get different abilities based on the animals of the woods, you'll need throughout the entire game, so it gets a bit more complex each stage.

DH is pretty fun on its own, though.

It's also a more traditional platfomer, with levels and such, compared to the Boss Rush style of AS.

*I know you hate Treasure, 16bit ;P

Yeah I got it as a compliment to Alien Soldier, plus it wasn't anywhere as expensive as Alien Soldier was. It's weird that I have the Treasure Box Collection burned on a disc for my PS2 but I need to play the real thing. Hopefully I can score a nice SCART input monitor and play it the way it was meant to be played.

I really want the Japanese versions of:
Battle Mania 2
Contra: Hard Corps
TMNT: Return of the Shredder

but they're all so expensive.

If you have the means I would suggest you to open it to check if it really is a legit original copy. Many reproductions have been made for this game.

I don't have the means right now, however I suppose picking up the necessary tool shouldn't be too much hassle so for peace of mind I suppose I will. I'm like 90%+ certain it's real, or otherwise it's an incredibly well done fake, I've been looking around for this game for a couple years now so I'm generally aware of the differences between the real and fake copies.

The label is the right quality mega drive paper, but is clearly aged. The colouring is 100% right, unlike a lot of repros of this game and the label is the correct label and not just the box art printed out. The cartridge itself is made of the right plastic and doesn't smell of glue or anything. When giving the game a light shake there is no extra stuff flying around inside. It's true none of this definitively proves anything, but I'm fairly confident I've got the real deal.

Well it's region locked, but I should be getting this adapter in the mail in the next few days
$_1.JPG

Hopefully this will work out and I'll let you know how it plays. So excited.

That unlocks everything and unless it's a game that's PAL optimized (not sure that happened with MD games) you should be good to go.

Yep, I haven't finished it yet, but it's a pretty different experience. Imagine Prince of Persia controls with abilities you unlock (kinda like Metroid). I think it's pretty linear though, so don't expect much, if any backtracking.

That's totally awesome. Can it play in the correct speed on a NTSC console?

I was fortunate enough to have bought this as a kid (my first import title!). It runs just fine on an NTSC console. The game itself has some terrible slow down in one of the final, post MM1-3, bosses though.

The final bits of Generation 16 Episode 16 are falling into place. Remember, if you want early access, $5 over at Patreon will get you there. Any support at all will get your name in the credits!

Did you finish it? The last level is pretty cool but tough since you have to do enough damage in a certain amount of time.

This looks looks cool. I hope more are converted to vinyl in the future.

Well I managed to get Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, and Shinobi 3 for just under 30 bucks. I had the guy pop open RoS and was legit version 1.00

What crazy dumb luck.

What's broken? I'm sure some of the modders around here can repair it. Maybe not for less, but at least you'll know the guy. I'd help you but I'm in Europe.

From doing a bit of research, it sounds like maybe the laser push switch is broken.

The system would make this horrible grinding noise every time I closed the tray (regardless of whether a CD was in the drive or not), but the discs would still boot and everything worked fine. Now recently, games won't boot and it sounds like the discs aren't even spinning.

It was 10 bucks too, CIB. I honestly thought RoS 1.00 was something I was going to have to pay a premium for on ebay. It pays to be patient and persistent with the limited venues you have to shop locally is really all I can say.

My whole deal right now was to find cases, manuals if possible, of my loose carts and buying a flash cart. The prices are just ridiculous.
