Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Among the numerous modem peripherals for Genesis / Mega Drive that either made it out, or did not, was AT&T's Edge 16.

Edge 16 was announced at Summer CES 1993 and playable at Winter CES 1994, before being scrapped. The XB∀ND (Catapult Entertainment XBAND modem & service) was similar in concept to Edge 16. Genesis XBAND came out in late 1994, SNES version in mid 1995.
Imagine that tower of power.

So that is what the cards for Ballz would have looked like! I wonder if those characters are on the cart (i'm assuming they are)

Also, i did a finis a video on our favorite unloved beat-em up, Alien Storm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzTYQdQ1Qak

Hey guys. I just finished a pet project of mine. It's a 4.5 hour megamix of 100 Sega Genesis songs, but with the following twists:

1. Every track is from a different composer.
2. Every track is from a different series/franchise.

As you can imagine, it took quite a bit of work to finally get a complete list that fulfilled both criteria while still being good. I also wanted to feature a maximum breadth of compositional style and genre representation. I believe I've succeeded! I've been working on this for nearly a month now.

Tell me what you think. This was a real labor of love on my part.

This is amazing, great job! I've bookmarked this so I can have this on in the background at home. I love the Genesis sound, thanks!

I remember trying the Edge 16 at CES. It might've been the same year Sega VR had a huge presence, but my memory is hazy. And the Sonic the Hedgehog arcade was there iirc.

Can't thank IrishNinja and Seven Devils enough for suggesting Fatal Labyrinth. It's a lot of fun, even if it is simplistic. I think what's great about it is that it's BALANCED. It's not as complex as other roguelikes, but it's challenging without being overbearing. Probably going to do a feature on it on my site; I'll share when finished.

Also, the "gold only buys you a better funeral" mechanic is hilarious.

Anyone purchase high quality replacement cartridge sticker game labels online? Where from? I have a couple used games I would like to replace their labels.

So my wife found a model 2 sega cd with a bunch of games at a garage sale for $20. Awesome! Less awesomely, the fuse is blown. Anyone know where I can get replacements?

Guys, I finished my piece on Fatal Labyrinth. Thanks again for the suggestion! This really was a joy to cover. A lot of interesting history. If you can't find a cart, you can get this badboy on Steam for about 3 clams. I also think it made its way into Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Can't speak to the emulation quality though.

Only real drawback is the lack of saving. This is a good game to spend three hours and a sixpack of beer on, though.

As far as I can tell, Fatal Labyrinth is one of the first roguelikes released for a game console. In fact, I can’t think of any console roguelikes that predate it. [UPDATE – I am told that there is no way this is THE first roguelike released for a home console. At bare minimum, Cloudy Mountain for the Intellivision and Gateway to Apshai for Colecovision precede it. Let no one say that I have spread misinformation!]

A very obvious anterior rogue-like for consoles would be its predecessor Dragon Crystal for the Master System and Game Gear.

Looks like they may have had a roughly contemporaneous release. This is a good excuse to play Dragon Crystal and do some more reseaech...

Oh yes, they seem to have been released at the same time. But comparing both versions, and how some mechanics are missing from the Master System (like death by overeating, the password system...) I assumed it was programmed first.

Was the Master System port a Brazil/PAL only thing?

I kinda want a light up keyboard. Have one of those Diablo 3 mice that fades in and out with red light.

This thing is old (got it when CompUSA was still a thing) but I love the action on it...

Anyway back to Genny, lol

I played Twinkle Tale the other day, idk if it's worth the import, but it was pretty decent, nice music for a Genny title too.

I got the Genesis 6-pack and while I can use left and right to move to which game I wanna play, the start button flat out does not work. I tried it on THREE different controllers and it didnt work.

Help?

For the past few days I've been using a 32X hooked up to a CDX. I have had no issues, but I know the official line was always that the two should not be used together. Does anybody know why?

Wasn't that purely because it doesn't stand safely in the cartridge slot and could potentially damage the port with movement. Technically it works fine though.

Are all three of those controllers six-button ones? If so, you might have to hold the Mode button down as you boot up the system.

I have the 6-Pak, and it works perfectly fine with the original and Genesis 3 six button controllers. Does Start work in other games? Maybe it's a controller port issue.

The only game I've ever had issues with a six button controller in was Ms. Pac-Man. I can start the game and all, but the d-pad seems to not always work right for some reason in that game.

ive not heard of that issue - you might need to send it back, man!

Posted a support message ( bought it last year in July though) so hopefully they get back soon. Man, sucks to have my cart and scart to yuv converter go out at the same time.

Speaking of which, anyone not use the ac adapter that comes with the scart to yuv? Dunno if I've always had a defective converter or if it was a power issue that eventually made it malfunction.

hi guyyysss

when I come home for thanksgiving i'm picking up my wii, i got a big fat SD card and i am planning on spending $50-$60 on Wii Virtual Console. I am planning on picking up lots of genesis games and I'm interested in your input.

here's what i already have on Wii VC

  • Gleylancer
  • Sonic 1
  • Pulseman
  • MUSHA
already have MWIV, streets of rage 1-3, toejam&earl 1&2 and revenge of shinobi via M2's amazing SVC games

here's what I'm considering

  • Phantasy Star
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Phantasy Star IV
  • Shining Force
  • Shining Force II
  • Sonic 3
  • Sonic & Knuckles
Anything I should seriously consider? here's a list of VC games

also, how is Sword of Vermilion?

I don't have time to look at the list, but based on the above I would pick Shining Force 2 and Phantasy Star IV. Also there is someone on the Buy/Sell thread that sells E-shop cards at a discount. The savings might be enough the you could pick more games up. I'll take a look when I get home.

im definitely at least getting all the phantasy star games, except 3. now that im done with my yakuza series run, phantasy star is next. except 3.

3 buttons. 2 Genesis controllers and 1 Mega Drive controller.

If it only happens with this cart, I'd put it down to dirty contacts that need to be cleaned or that there is something wrong with it. Is this system connected to a 32X? If so, try running it direct to the base console instead. You could also try just having one controller plugged in when you boot up. I have no other ideas beyond that.

You know, even with PS and PSII having remakes on PS2 (lol), I think I actually like the original music and graphics better? The PS2 remakes have more of a...flash/cheap mobile game look to them? Maybe its just me.

I still need to actually play some version of PS to completion though.

Also I want this sticker:

Yes, eff that. I actually stopped at that point & haven't touched it in awhile.

On a side note, I finally got Elemental Master and Hellfire both complete. Will enjoy both this weekend.

Elemental Master has such a good soundtrack. Fun game too, lol.

Hellfire is Toaplan so I imagine it's quality, but it's not my cup of tea
