Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

what ive played of the Cotton series has been a blast, but the # 1 sega cute-em-up in my heart remains fantasy zone~

Konami carts are a bit different in NA with the Konami logo in the back. Same with Namco I believe. Some Acclaim carts use different screws I wanna say too. And of course Codemasters carts have a completely different design.

As someone who takes a lot dealing with Sega carts, pretty much nailed it here. Acclaim did have special screws in some of its game. I even remember Capcom having one or two carts like Konami with their branding on the back.

Also, of course, there was a couple Genesis titles with multi-tap ports built into the cartridge.

Lol #1 Sega one is the only Sega one?

Cute em ups are awesome, Ultimate and Sexy Parodius are really the ultimate ones, then Harmful Park I think.

It's a continuum too, Cotton doesn't have the true insanity of Parodius and weirdness Fantasy Zone, and is really only one step away from fantasy shooters like Sengoku Blade and Sylphia. Then it's only one more step to SD semi-comedy stuff like In The Hunt and stuff with the Metal Slug aesthetic.

Guys, I am in the mood to play a really weird/obscure Genesis RPG, though I'm not sure where to start looking. Started Crusader of Centy, which is fun, but not... uh... obscure enough ... to suit my present needs, if that makes any sense. Any suggestions? Is Buck Rogers worth a playthrough?

How about Fatal Labyrinth? I like it, a lot of people pass on it & it's cheap.

I'm playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on my Retro Trio 3. It's pretty fun, but I hate when I get low down in a course and die in the water.
The solution, therefore, is to not fall down onto the lower paths :D

Okay, okay, that came off as incredibly condescending. But there is a bit of truth to it; most Sonic stages are designed with an upper path that's generally faster but harder to stay on, and a lower path that's safer but significantly slower (and in the case of Aquatic Ruin Zone, "safer" is questionable too - things get kind of hairy down there). Figuring out where the upper paths are and how to stay on them is just part of the learning curve of the series. (Part of the fun, too.)

On the bright side, only two stages in Sonic 2 have water in them (Chemical Plant and Aquatic Ruin - Hidden Palace was gonna have water, but that stage got cut), so you'll spend less time trudging through water once you're clear of them. The downside is that instead you'll find spike pits, lava, oil (which is basically quicksand for all intents and purposes) or even the occasional bottomless pit instead, but funnily enough, they're arguably less aggravating.

yeah, i absolutely adore it - Dragon's Crystal on SMS is fun as well. thing is, it's such a luck-of-the-draw experience sometimes: you're doing well early on, finding decent weapons/armor/some potions, you go to the next floor and BAM some asshole mage paralyzes you while 2 jerks destroy you. it's crazy, haha.

Here's some better pictures. For those who didn't see my previous post, I got the entire lot here for £200 including the Mega Drive/Mega CD. It was a listing on Gumtree for £100 with a terrible quality image and I couldn't make out any of the titles but the sheer magnitude of games seemed like a bargain, can't say i've ever seen so many Mega CD games in person. I did however notice one game had red text on the spine and I was 80% sure it could be Snatcher. Anyway I shot the guy a text and he replied that "a kind gentleman on Gumtree has informed me I have a rare game in my collection, i'm going to research this "Catcher" (yes, Catcher) and relist the product. Fuck. Being the sleazy jerk I am I offered him £200 and the rest is history! He was a really sincere guy when I went to pick it up, turns out it was his late fathers collection and he just wanted to get rid of it. I feel like a dick. Anywho i'm incredibly overwhelmed with what I have here, what do I even play? I've been playing Snatcher for a while and i'm loving it but what else should I give a shot?

am i imagining it, or wasn't there a fan effort towards that a while back?

also: finished Centy last night! short game, but had some cool bits, let's talk about that.

the game goes to some interesting places around that era (time travel, ambiguous morality etc) but one scene in particular stood out for me: you wander into this new town, and some asshole mage turns you into a slime creature (so that a slime creature can be a human for a bit, natch)...sucks, right? you already possess the ability to talk to both man & beasts by then, but nobody really helps you.

so you wander out into the woods, and 4 slimes are playing around a tree, talking about how great it is to do so - and then, the same human warrior you've seen half the game getting all the glory shows up and they run off, and he starts attacking you, totally unprovoked! your only option is to flee into a tree where they're recovering, and talking about how awful "heroes" are, how they wish humans would just let them play, and the like.

the big momma slime knows you're not one of hers, and helps you get back to your original form (phew!), but if you return to that wooded area? you'll see them all playing, but get too close, and they'll run & hide again.

it probably doesn't sound like much, but this was '94, and long before Rocket Slime/Nier/etc got you thinking about that perspective, so i really dug that.

Speaking of, what's the case for preferring Revenge over Shinobi III? I like both games, but being able to run makes III a lot more fun for me. But I'd like to hear from people who feel otherwise!

Revenge is kinda meant to be a slow moving game. Those types of slow moving action platformers were pretty common around the late 80's and very early 90's. The gameplay is more methodical in its setup. I don't think just tacking a run feature on to it would make it better. Shinobi 3 on the other hand is designed and balanced with the run feature in mind.

Revenge has better level designs and bosses, not to mention more challenge!

For what it's worth, I also think Golden Axe is more fun than Final Fight because I can run in GA, haha.

Anybody have any experience with multi ac-adaptors for Mega Drive/Genesis, CD and 32x? Something like this: http://en.retrogamesupply.com/colle...in-one-for-sega-megadrive-genesis-mega-cd-32x

Would love to have something like this to reduce cable clutter, but not if it compromises picture quality or anything like that.

i use the Trio & can't recommend it enough!

And Alien Storm is better then Golden Axe due to its variety and dodge roll

Fatal Labyrinth is great so far. Did not, however, expect to spend so much time walking off excess food. Obesity is the real killer in this game.

I'm using the Trio too, but this one is way cheaper. Had I known about it back then I would have bought this one. Plus the Trio is designed for American plugs, and the Euro adapter they ship don't fit secure sockets.

Can I get a trio even if I don't have a 32x yet? Just use if with my Genesis and Sega CD? I wanna be future proof, since I know someday I'll run out of good consoles to collect and get a 32x.

They also sell a version for just the SegaCD and Genesis, the Duo, for if you don't want a raging dumpster fire on top of your quality gaming consoles.

Among the numerous modem peripherals for Genesis / Mega Drive that either made it out, or did not, was AT&T's Edge 16.

Edge 16 was announced at Summer CES 1993 and playable at Winter CES 1994, before being scrapped. The XB∀ND (Catapult Entertainment XBAND modem & service) was similar in concept to Edge 16. Genesis XBAND came out in late 1994, SNES version in mid 1995.

Are you telling me the tower of power can reach another height of awesomeness?!

Mega Drive 1 on top of a Mega CD 1, with this Edge 15 modem thing in, then a 32X in it, then game genie, then S&K and then Sonic 3?!

Hey guys. I just finished a pet project of mine. It's a 4.5 hour megamix of 100 Sega Genesis songs, but with the following twists:

1. Every track is from a different composer.
2. Every track is from a different series/franchise.

As you can imagine, it took quite a bit of work to finally get a complete list that fulfilled both criteria while still being good. I also wanted to feature a maximum breadth of compositional style and genre representation. I believe I've succeeded! I've been working on this for nearly a month now.

Here's the video:
