A friend had one of those. What a POS. It had all the games from the Ultimate Genesis Collection, no more, no less.

Well...it also has Shadow Dancer, the 2D Version of Virtua Fighter 2, and the first three Mortal Kombat games. Though you could easily just jab the arcade kollection for MK for $10 on PS360.

Damn...here's hoping you can get the right version. Good luck.

Speaking of NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, I've been debating for ages which version to get. Last night, I was comparing the 32X, Saturn, and PlayStation versions to the arcade by watching videos on YouTube for each in different tabs, and pausing and comparing the differences.
They all have different music from the arcade version, and the screen is a bit zoomed in on all of the console versions. It seems like graphically, they all look largely the same. The 32X version uses the same music in-game as the original game on Genesis does (and I'm guessing it's the same for the Genesis TE, too), but the menus have new music. Saturn and PlayStation have a completely new soundtrack, which is so damn mid-'90s CD game sounding, and it's kinda awesome. But it's got loading times, though...so I kinda feel like I should go for 32X, so I could just pop it in and play. But I'm not sure yet.
I guess I could get more than one. It wouldn't be the first game in the series I own multiple version of. I own the original NBA Jam on Genesis and SNES, NBA Hangtime on SNES and N64, and NBA Jam: On Fire Edition on Xbox 360 (which works on Xbox One, too) and PlayStation 3. I also own NBA Showtime on Dreamcast, and while my younger brother's here, I also have the first EA NBA Jam on Xbox 360.

Read more of the Console Wars book and the Wal-Mart story is interesting. Kalinske must have spent a lot of money setting up that Genesis store.

That game is going up??? WTF?

As someone who got into the retro scene in the last two years, Gunstar probably occupies that same spot as Contra NES.

It's a top 5/10 game for its platform that no one is trading back. Nor did it seem to have a super huge print run like a Sonic or Streets of Rage 2.

Contra did have a huge print run, but I'm sure many were destroyed or lost.

ordered a genesis->wii/gc adapter for wii vc glory. need to track down a six button genesis pad now!

I keep seeing people mention the 32X version as their favorite when I was checking impressions online. Have you played the Saturn or PlayStation version, by any chance?

The cartridge format really has me leaning towards 32X.

I also have it on the SNES, but prefer the music and scaling of the 32X version.
I imagine it's pretty hard to prefer the music in a version without music to one that does. Hah.

I still wonder why the SNES versions of the NBA Jam games have no music during gameplay. It also has less voice clips, or at least the first one does. My guess is that it had something to do with the weaker CPU, but I don't really know, I'm not great with technical stuff.

The first one on SNES didn't save your progress, either, and needed these insanely long passwords (not sure about TE). It's another reason why I never play NBA Jam on there. Plus I've had the Genesis version since it came out, whereas I got the SNES version for free like 6-7 years ago from a friend along with a bunch of other sports games for it (including NBA Hangtime, Jam's successor). It felt like such a downgrade. :(

Im aware theres no music during the gameplay in the SNES version, but I was referring to the menus and team select for music.

I guess I should have been more specific. I prefer the sound FX and voice sampling in the 32X version. SNES sounds so meh.

Never played the PS version, the only CD based game I have is NBA Jam Sega CD.I do have the Game Gear version which is awesome.

I was just joking. :p

It's impossible not to notice the dead silence on SNES during a game.

I'm not sure if I like TE's menu music more on SNES or 32X, but they both sound fine. I like the first game's music a lot more, though, especially on Genesis.

Edit: Oh, yeah, I think I brought this up here a few years ago, but does anyone else get glitchy graphics when playing the original NBA Jam on a 32X? It's fine when I put the cartridge in without a 32X, but I don't ever feel like going through the trouble of doing that and switching the video cables whenever I want to play the game. Plus it's only on a few things. Here's some pics of the issue:
No other Genesis game I've ever played (I own 86 right now) has had any issues when playing on a 32X.

(And yes, my actual initials do spell out JAM.)

I dunno, reclean the contacts, I guess? Only suggestion I've got.

I tried that in the past, but it did never did anything. Plus the game works fine on the Genesis, and all other games when played on 32X don't have any issues, so I don't think they're dirty. It's been like this forever. I'm guessing it's some weird thing that's specific to the game being played on 32X. I'm really curious about what it could be.

Anyway, I've also been thinking about getting the Street Fighter II games on Genesis, despite owning a few other versions of them already. But for some reason, I never owned a 16-bit version of the game, and that feels wrong. They're dirt cheap now, so I'm thinking I'm about going ahead with it. Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition seems great from what I've seen and read/heard.

As for which versions of Street Fighter II I own, I have (in order of purchase): Street Fighter II on Game Boy, Street Fighter Collection (Super and Super Turbo) on PlayStation, Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival on Game Boy Advance, Capcom Classics Collection (includes ports of the PlayStation versions of the first three versions of Street Fighter II) on Xbox, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on PlayStation 3.

They never did much to actively foster good relations with third parties. After the US crash, Nintendo had most of the console market for themselves and with their inevitable success third parties just sort of fell onto their lap, and Nintendo almost reluctantly took them along for the ride. Then they pretty much just ran on momentum with regards to third party support throughout the 16-bit years, and by the N64 that momentum had begun to peter out. Companies like Sega, Sony and Microsoft have gradually cultivated a template over the years for how to handle third parties, but Nintendo have never seen themselves as any of those companies and thus have never really changed their core strategies. They just see themselves as game makers, and their hardware exists primarily to facilitate their own needs.

There was an interesting article I read years ago about a developer pitching a "Halo killer" to Nintendo during the Gamecube years, and they talked about what an alien concept that felt like to Nintendo and how they just didn't "get it".

Yeah, I'm reading more of the book, and it was talking about how lots of 3rd parties were losing a lot of profit potential due to Nintendo's policies. Makes you wonder if they would have jumped ship to Sega had it not been for Sony entering the market.

How long is Shining in the Darkness? Thinking about playing that after Xenogears. Either that or maybe Landstalker or Centy. I really need to get cracking on the Shining series though.

I kind of wish somebody made a grid-based map-making app for Android or something, because doing it on actual graph paper for Shining in the Darkness has proven... well, entertaning enough, but then I find out I improperly centered the map and run into the edge of the paper. Presumably an app would let you do the mapping on an infinite canvas...

I seem to recall it being around 20-25 hoursit's been a while since I played through it. Also, I eschew graph paper when I play dungeon crawlers...I like the extra challenge.

Still, Shadow hog, I think you may be able to sub in either a geometry app, or a dungeons & dragons dungeon app.

Pro D&D dungeon mapper, perhaps?

Just beat Altered Beast again to celebrate the Mega Drives birthday.

Still can't decide wherever Mega Drive or Saturn is my favorite platform.

Ordered Battletoads and Skitchin, both should be here this week. Genesis version I heard is easier than the NES version so hopefully I'll get through it. And Skitchin is more Road Rash which is always good.

I think I'm going to try a modern/retro buying blackout for the month of December. Prices of retro always seem to peak during the holidays and I just spent a bunch on my Xbox due to sales. We'll see what happens.

Doubt it though

It's way, way easier, I could actually no death it if I put more time on it. Heck the Turbo Tunnel was toned down to the point they removed any challenge from it.

I pulled the trigger on a HDG Model 1 Genny. Only $22 shipped but it's just the console. I actually have some controllers and plan to get an RGB cable. Just need the power cable.

I don't think it's a non-TMSS unit. Anyone here think there's really a major difference in the sound quality? My unit is has the HDG text and expansion port.

Just finished the latest update to my ongoing Genesis Game Opinion Summaries list. I'm through the letter G now. 72 of about 210 complete. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=187381911 It's a big project, but I'm glad to finally be working on this...

I have NBA Jam TE for the SNES, Game Boy, PC, and Saturn (and the original NBA Jam for Genesis, Sega CD, and Game Gear), and I'm going to agree, 32X is the way to go. The PC, PS1, or Saturn version is also interesting to have, but I think the 32X version is more fun to play, for some reason... and the SNES version isn't as good, it has no ingame music. Oh, and I believe that NBA Jam and Jam TE both have non-battery flash memory chips for saving on the Genesis, but on SNES have batteries, so that's a plus for the Genesis/32X versions for sure -- no battery to need to replace. (As for the GB and GG versions, the GB and GG versions of NBA Jam and Jam TE are okay, but have no multiplayer support at all, not even link cable. Know this going in.)

NBA Jam TE is my favorite basketball game ever. It's got high nostalgia factor for me, sure, but also it's just an amazingly fun game... and the later Jam/Hangtime/Showtime/etc titles don't have quarterly player swapping, some of the options like turbo mode, etc. Some even ditch injury ratings, a good addition from TE! They do add player creators, but I'd rather have hot spots, turbo mode, and such than that.

i dig NBA Jam on saturn, just misses that flash photography

yeah, about 25-30 hours for me i wanna say? it was forever ago, and i did some grinding - kept wanting to buy rare shit showing up in town, haha. loved that game!

Centy is rather short, went through that & Oasis in the time it'd take a longer game...doing Monster World IV now myself! and yeah, Shining in between

this would be awesome to see - i totally drew maps but although i sadly can't find em at the moment, i swear 1-800-USA-SEGA would send some maps on that one for free if you called, just like Phantasy Star I

NBA Jam on Genesis and NBA Hangtime on N64 are pretty much tied as my favorites. I don't know if I could pick one over the other. I also really dig NBA Jam: On Fire Edition. I do also play stuff like NBA 2K and Live from time to time. I was really into them a few months back. NBA Street is a lot of fun, too. I have a lot of basketball games...

Thanks for the comments, guys. I think I'll go with 32X, since most people seem to like that the most (plus cartridges are the best). I might order a copy within the next few days.
I haven't played NBA Jam: Tournament Edition in years, and never long enough to see all of the changes they made from the original. I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with it after I buy it. I may get it on Saturn eventually, too, if I can find a cheap copy locally at some point. Can't have enough Jam.

Sandopolis Zone is so good i'm at a loss for words. apart from looking amazing and having a great theme, there's all these little quirks to the stage that hadn't shown up yet elsewhere in the game. cool bosses too!!

Is Showtime any good?

Yeah, it's pretty good...and it has John Tesh's Roundball Rock, the NBA on NBC theme, which is rad. It's fun, but I just prefer Jam and Hangtime overall.

Showtime is lot like Hangtime (which is basically NBA Jam with spin moves, alley-oops, team fire, and create-a-player), but they added personal fouls for shoving, and after a certain amount of shoves, the other team gets a free throw. I don't recall any other changes, besides the obvious move to 3D polygons from 2D sprites.

I like EA's NBA Jam games more than Showtime, personally. NBA Jam: On Fire Edition is fucking great.

I have Showtime and NBA Jam 2000, but always seem to forget I have them because they're cart only. If only

NBA Jam 2000 is not a real NBA Jam game, unfortunately. After the success of the home versions (published by Acclaim) of Midway's NBA Jam and NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, Acclaim got the exclusive rights to use the NBA Jam name and developed their own games internally. I hear most of Acclaim's NBA Jam's aren't very good. Midway's NBA Hangtime and NBA Showtime are the true sequels, which Midway also followed up with NBA Hoopz and the NBA Ballers series, but those changed the number of players per team, among other things.

Mark Turmell, NBA Jam's creator, only worked on NBA Jam, NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, NBA Hangtime, NBA Showtime, NBA Ballers, and EA's NBA Jam games.

NBA Jam itself is based on another Midway arcade basketball game, Arch Rivals. NBA Jam increased the pace, added real teams, new gameplay mechanics, and made it all really over the top.

Most underrated zone in a Sonic game. So many people seem to hate it but I love it. It's a good change of pace.

S3K has the best soundtrack of the trilogy IMO. The music for Sandopolis is a total banger.

Edit: and yeah I thought everyone hated the stage but me.

Act 2's a bit more annoying than Act 1 is, though, with that ever-present ghost-attack gimmick.

I mean, it's still fairly generous with the amount of time you have to relight the room before they get large enough to attack you, and the chains that relight the room are fairly plentiful themselves, but it's still a distraction from the stage proper.

If you're doing S3&K, this is where New Game+ kicks in.

Which is partly why this is my favorite in the series. (That or CD. My opinion on which between the two is superior fluctuates.)

Sandopolis Zone is still my least fav stage in the game.

It's not a bad stage mind you as there are no bad stages in the Sonic and Kunckles game.

The only thing good about Sandopolis is the music. Easily the worst stage in that game, same with the boss at the end. Which is just as annoying as the end boss in Sonic 2.

what dont you like about it?
Act 1 isn't too bad but it's seems to take the parts I hate from Marble Zone and Oil Ocean. Slides that lead to sand pits with an enemy positioned to hit you when you land. Slow unnecessary platforming sections. It even has a reused enemy type from Marble Zone.

Act 2
Pushing the blocks to open those sand pillars while trying to keep the lights on because of the Ghosts and awkwardly moving platforms, is a pain in the ass. There are certain parts of the level that go for a loop and when the lights go off, I'm frantically looking for a way out and usually make a mistake. I suck when there is a sense of urgency. But like I said, I enjoy the music of that level, just hate everything else.
