Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

But it comes with the Master System games too right?

For example, that 80 game Genesis park is 50% Genesis games 50% generic crap.

It has a mix of legit SMS games, GG games and bad homebrew SMS (I think?) but it's maybe 15 games total of about 80. I guess that's better than nothing, but even so...

Yeah, kinda like the Genesis clones.

I actually own one of them. Gameplay is there, not so much audio...

but I mean, its just nice to think about you can technically buy a new Sega system, right?

beat Beyond Oasis last night! really neat game, but man those platforming sections can go suck a butt. there's one towards the last dungeon with moving platforms, dudes with bows to snipe while you try to get on em, and these sparky things that basically follow you...you can duck em, but then the arrows can hit you, and you can't get away if you're not moving etc...it felt like a crapshot getting through there! of course the last guy(s) were cake after that, haha...really should've used more weapons/items as i went but it made it more interesting.

the Saturn one is already in my backlog, i'm on a roll right now so i'm debating restarting Monster World IV or tying up book 1 of Shining Force CD next...i'd really love to get through the Shining series, but there's the rest of CD, like 3/4 of part 2, and now i have all 3 fan translations of III so im thinking of peppering those titles in between other stuff!

Guys, how does Blackthorne hold up? I'm on a mission to play through every 32X game ever, and I think I'd like to try that or Star Wars next. Cosmic Carnage is on the short list as well, but I know for a fact that it's garbage.

The first level of Star Wars was enjoyable, but once you get to the Star Destroyer it's all down hill. Everything runs at about 12 fps. Haven't tried Blackthorne yet.

Read some more of Console Wars on how EA reversed engineed the Genesis. Pretty interesting how Nintendo had a monopoly on 3rd parties back then and now have the weakest 3rd party support.

They never did much to actively foster good relations with third parties. After the US crash, Nintendo had most of the console market for themselves and with their inevitable success third parties just sort of fell onto their lap, and Nintendo almost reluctantly took them along for the ride. Then they pretty much just ran on momentum with regards to third party support throughout the 16-bit years, and by the N64 that momentum had begun to peter out. Companies like Sega, Sony and Microsoft have gradually cultivated a template over the years for how to handle third parties, but Nintendo have never seen themselves as any of those companies and thus have never really changed their core strategies. They just see themselves as game makers, and their hardware exists primarily to facilitate their own needs.

There was an interesting article I read years ago about a developer pitching a "Halo killer" to Nintendo during the Gamecube years, and they talked about what an alien concept that felt like to Nintendo and how they just didn't "get it".

I think describing Nintendo as relectant is abit of a big stretch - they forced their 3rd parties ti sign highly aggressive non-compete contracts that prevented the like of the MS from gaining any traction (hence the amount of 3rd party MS games from European developers)

This was Dice pitching what became Battlefield lol. Nintendo almost could have had a goldmine there.

God damn there's some cult-like hatred for Tom Kalinske in that Sega-16 thread.

All I remember is it was supposed to be a sci fi shooter and Reggie eventually said something to the effect of "Stop bullshitting me. Is this really gonna work?" and then it got canceled. If this was Dice I would be very surprised.

Well that explains they did pitch Battlefield to Nintendo, but I still don't think this was the project I was refering to.

Are you thinking of Starcraft Ghost? Swinging Ape cancelled it on the Gamecube because the lack of online support. Then all remaining platforms were cancelled a year later.

ended up being boring and predictable with my wii vc genesis shopping spree. behold, the haul:
  • Sonic 3
  • Sonic & Knuckles
  • Phantasy Star II
  • Phantasy Star IV

also picked up Phantasy Star for SMS and Fatal Fury Special and Last Blade 2 for NEO GEO.

for Genesis, next shopping spree will likely consist of shining force 1&2 and shadow dancer.

Pretty sure Ghost was slated as a multiplatform console title. And the project was very deliberately framed as a Halo killer specifically for the Gamecube, and Ghost was never marketed that way.

It was Geist. Here it is.

At the time, Nintendo believed “Geist” — a first person shooter published by Nintendo — would be GameCube’s “Halo Killer”. And everyone inside the meeting reassured Reggie that “Geist” would become a huge hit with the older hardcore gamers who loved “Halo”.

“And then at the end [of the presentation], Reggie looked around the table and basically said “Look, don’t bullshit me. How do you guys really think this thing is going to hold up?” No one said a word for a minute

GAF, I need a controller recommendation, the standard cable is far too short and the d-pad sometimes leaves my thumbs a bit sore.

I need a six button controller to use as my standard Mega Drive controller, first party SEGA hardware is preferable but I will go third party for the right controller if need be.

You are right, we are probably talking about two different things then!

Really interesting! Reggie was definitely right on the money here.

is that wireless 6 button IR or what? all mine are wired, i don't take no chances haha

haha yeah, i love that place but a few really didn't care for Console Wars - thing is, Kalinske has, over the years, said conflicting shit on interviews over there, so i think he gets a bit've what Stan Lee gets in the comic community.

even with that though, it's hard to imagine the genesis without him. i was a sega kid, they were barely existing in the public eye before his turn at the wheel

Nothing boring about that list, they're all great games.

this!

Thinking about hitting up the krikzz for the BF deal... Any recommendations?

i went with the Super Everdrive & ED64 board bruh, just dive in & worry about it later i guess haha

Love Story of Thor! The mix of brawler and adventure game is to this day fresh imo. Can't remember the platforming being obnoxious but that could just be because I played Landstalker before it and platforms moving in 3 dimensions over a black background was probably one of the worst design choices ever, and the reason I didn't nor ever will beat Landstalker...

The Saturn sequel to Thor/Oasis is not as good as the Genesis game though. And the sound mix is one of the worst ever.

yeah, see i saw there was a fan mod of some kind to make Landstalker's shadows or the like stand out more, last IPS i patched didn't work but i'm gonna try it again soon, since it sounds like that's the way to play it!

and that's a bummer to hear, i got the sequel on the cheap & will still give it a go at some point

Hmm, an ips you say. I'll have to look into that!

Eh, it's still a good game. Just didn't feel as polished as the Genesis game at all. But absolutely worth a try if you liked the first one!

How reliable are these controllers? I might track one down here in the UK.

I have these. It's been ages since my Genesis has been out of the closet, but I recall them working pretty darn well for IR tech. You didn't have to point it RIGHT at the receiver, but it's still nothing like true, modern wireless tech.

There's just a really hostile vibe prevalent there sometimes which really puts me off (not just in regards to Kalinske). The Stan Lee/Jack Kirby thing is a good analogy. I'm moreso interested in understanding the kind of social dynamics at play which consistently seem to happen in these kinds of success stories, rather than pinning the blame on an individual and shitting all over them.

I think my problem with Kalinske is that I often see him named as responsible (though giving credit to just one person is silly in itself) for Sega's biggest success...which is only true for NA. He wasn't the guy behind Sega's arcade dominance, beating Nintendo twice in Europe, and TecToy.

Not sure why Yuzo decided to go with more of an ambient soundtrack...especially after getting access to more CD tech.

You can get a controller extension for $3 delivered, and a six button.

Completely reliable. My main controller.

Also feels better than the standard sixer to me. Original six button is really small and thin.

So if I'm hunting for a Genesis on eBay, basically the main thing I'm looking for in a Model 1 is the High Def Graphics text, right? Are those more likely to have the better sound output?

Yo! Whats up with Gunstar Heroes in the last 3 months? Completed auctions are going for $70 to $100. I already have it, but a friend of mine was looking to pick it up, not anymore.
Edit: this is for CIB, cart only is cheaper, but still.
