Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Man, Monster World IV is a blast - I'm at Ice Palace or whatever 2, game feels more dungeon heavy than Shion's outing but it's just got so much charm

So Mega Drive is to the UK as Master System is to Brazil?

Also, is the Genesis Model 3 any good? Thinking of picking those up because of its size.

It's way, way easier, I could actually no death it if I put more time on it. Heck the Turbo Tunnel was toned down to the point they removed any challenge from it.

Ok I just beat the Turbo Tunnel. I Youtube the NES version and the layout seems the same. How was it toned down? They both look identical.

What? The Genesis version is so much easier since it's based on the Japanese NES version, here's what the cutting room floor said about it:

"When the game was localized in Japan, the difficulty was toned down considerably, which particularly shines in levels that are notoriously hard in the US/European versions. The Genesis port is based on this localization, so all level changes as well as the other changes above carry into said version.

Stage 3: Turbo Tunnel
Segment 1: A string of three short walls became two; the remaining two were spaced out more. The last wall before the checkpoint was removed and the previous two spaced out.
Segment 2: The last short wall before the first jump was removed. After the first jump, the first of three walls was removed and the others spaced out more. After the second jump, the string of six alternating walls was reduced to just four—all spaced out more. Finally, the last short wall before the checkpoint was removed.
Segment 3: The second string of four alternating walls became just three, which were spaced out more (noticing a pattern yet?). Immediately thereafter, three short walls were reduced to two at (you guessed it) more generous spacing. Both elevated ramps were moved to the ground. In the section with the wall-dropping camels, the short wall was removed.
Segment 4: The shifted ramp and the elevated ramp were both moved to normal positions. The particularly fast-moving robot enemy was removed. All five blind jumps (accompanied by the exclamation point (!)) were given normal ramps and the flashing exclamation point removed.
Segment 5: This section's speed was reduced.
All in all, the Japanese version relocated four ramps to easier positions, added five ramps to replace blind jumps, removed five tall walls, and removed five short walls. Needless to say, the Japanese Turbo Tunnel is considerably easier than its United States counterpart. "

Makes me proud to be British. *Anecdotal statement that means nothing about actual sales figures outside the catchment area of my school and who I chose to be friends with alert* I didn't know any kid that owned a SNES at the time.

MD was certainly a popular system though.

The article is right though as I don't have as much trouble with the Genesis version compared to the US NES version.=p
Oh I believe and I'm sure if I played the NES version I would be able to tell, but I don't have the game. Just the spacing alone would make a huge difference.

I think the NES game has tighter controls overall, so I find it easier to play.

The Genesis game also pauses for you to get 1-ups from every crow in the Wookie Hole. So weird.

There are a ton of behaviors that are slightly off in the Genesis game. I don't like it as much overall, but that could just be because I have the NES one down cold.

Yup. Although I live in the US now, I am originally a Brit and we all loved Sega! I haven't seen sales figures, but I'd be pretty surprised if the Super Nintendo beat it there.

it's just fantastic - did you play through Wonder Boy in Monster World? it's one of those absolute gems i never see discussed enough too

Yeah, it seems like Wonder Boy / Monster Land discussion jumps from Dragon's Trap to Monster World IV and I don't really know why. Wonder Boy in Monster World is probably my favorite of the series. It may not have the animal changing gimmick of Dragon's Trap, but it feels like the polished final version of the original Monster Land formula. (Haven't played through Monster World IV yet, so that may change.)

you know? i never finished Land, but from what i saw, i can see this, yeah
i loved the hidden doors/loot, as well as the soundtrack...it's also such a colorful game. again i lament the lack of save slots but there's little for me to knock on it, such a great experience

I have all three versions of Monster World - Mega Drive, Dynastic Hero on PCE, and Master System.

PCE one is the best by a very small margin, it lacks some paralax but is otherwise better looking, and sounds a lot better. But the Master System version is so insanely good looking for a MS game. It looks better than many Mega Drive games, it's crazy.

Unfortunately the hit detection is broken on MS so it's a complete dog to play.

man, hit detection in a lotta things of that era weren't great for me - i was just on about Sword of Vermillion, but boy was it a mess there sometimes. the trick always felt like getting used to where the game made its boundaries - i adapt fairly well, so i don't mind

i mean, even in MW IV, there's totally times i get juggled or take hits i don't think i should've, and likewise with enemies sometimes. it's imperfect but i roll with it & just try to make it work

Massive piece of shit. Bad sound. Bad picture. Cheap and nasty.

Love how the Mega Drive was so huge here. It was my go to console for a long time.

Damn, now you got me watching the old UK Sega commercials.

As effective as Sega USA's commercials were, their anti-Nintendo stuff was a bit childish at times. Good, but I kinda cringe at times watching them.

as the SMS kid on the block: fuck that, they were golden, haha

for real, half the time the genny gets slagged in GAF threads, it's decades-old umad responses to those ads, that's how effective they were!

i'll grant you that the to be this good takes AGES/SEGA is really brilliant and i wish it'dve caught on over here, but the sega scream really is iconic on this side of the pond

hell, SNES got dragged into the attitude era of the 90's late in their gen, and then Crash brought it full circle for sony

Haha this is true. Those ads cut deep. Sega went super agressive in their marketing. All added to the fun

huh...i don't even remember the NiGHTS one

Hopefully the system gets more respect (in general, not just on GAF) when that movie on Console Wars comes out.

hopefully, i mean in general i feel the last year or so of threads on here where genesis - even its music - are cited, it's gone better. drive-by shitposts of the same 3 games NUFF SAID feel less frequent, so i kinda feel like it's slowly getting its due...or maybe those with the same tired opinions formed as kids & never revisited are posting less, not sure

but i was discussing with bishopcruz how some of the more knowledgable retro people still do come off at best ignorant of sega's history (some of the retronauts crew) and at worst, heavily biased against it (dr sparkle of chrontendo/etc)

I've noticed James Rolfe still has a very slight anti Mega Drive vibe at times. I remember him defending the SNES Mortal kombat as the better version. IT HAD NO BLOOD JAMES, making any other points irrelevant! I love the guy but there is definitely still some early 90s console bias in there. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, just interesting is all

SNES played worse as well so the Genesis version would be better regardless!!!

I also agree with you on that about him being against Genesis/Mega Drive so much, gets out of hand at points!

It did? I've played both but lack of blood aside and different sounding music I'm not sure I could recall much difference

Yeah he was saying recently how Bloodlines isn't a patch on CV 4. Have to disagree!

Yep, even Hardcoregaming101 said so as well.=p

Me and my cousins played the shit out of UMK3 on the Mega Drive.

It was pretty fun since they didn't have internet, so we had to manually discover the moves ourselves instead of looking them up. Whenever we would discover a new move, we would keep it a secret from each other so we wouldn't use it against each other, lol.

yeah, never was into AVGN (or most YT personalities), i recall someone putting on his genesis/SNES video and not making it halfway through

SNES played worse as well so the Genesis version would be better regardless!!!

this all day - SNES looked & sounded better, but controls were stiff. combos on the genesis version were far easier!

oh man, that was creepy haha but the dropping PSX was a classy touch
and compared to the US saturn ads that was fairly tame/reigned in, i think!

I wouldn't look to Hardcoregaming 101 as an authority on anything. I enjoy reading them from time to time, but a lot of their writers that aren't Kurt Kalata are not very knowledgeable about whole series covered in articles, or make blanket statements about specific games.

Example:

ehhh i think HG101 gets a bad rap - sure, user-submitted stuff isn't always ideal, but that should compel more to submit corrections. they cover such a wide base that there's not much like them on the net, love that place

Like his Atari Jaguar video when he went out of his way to play the shit games. You could make any system look bad by playing the worst games on it.

Isn't that really old content? HCG101 has matured over time. Here is the current page for DQ8: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/dragonquest/dragonquest8.htm
