The opening took my breath away, and it's still impressive.

Man, that looks hot.

I really need to play that some day.

Read more of Console Wars.

Funny how Kalinske hired someone from Reebok to help him, considering that is where Bernie Stolar hired Peter Moore from.

That gameshow that Sega of America made with the Saved by the Bell and Full House. I wonder if that's on youtube? The guy who played Zack in Saved by the Bell was a a pretty big Sega fan if I remember correctly. He even had a Saturn.

Hey guys, I have a question for you.

I got a huge deal on a complete, genuine Japanese Mega Drive 2 - as in marked 'for Japan only', as opposed to the other Japanese & Asian NTSC model - boxed, with manual and all the stuff originally included, matching console/manual serial number... It's this one here: link to SEGA Retro image.

Now, since the MD2 top has a little mark on the glossy ring around the cart slot, I'm pretty much conviced to swap it with another top from a better looking console, and I've actually found one. Point is, that would come from an Asian PAL set (like this one).

My question is: do you know if those two models share the same shell and screws positioning? Basically, what I'd want to do is to put the Asian PAL MD2's top on the Japanese MD2's bottom (which I want to keep because of the original serial number), so I'd like to see if the top parts are interchangeable between the two models.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, no idea what the answer is for that.

Console Wars is getting to the Game Gear and Mega CD. Should be interesting to hear about that.

Anyone have an experience with Championship PRO-AM? I'm playing through RCPA2 on Rare Replay and found it enjoyable. Is it more of the same with the added Genesis twang?

No problem, thanks for checking out anyway!
It looks like they are compatible tho, as the Asian models usually put together PAL boards into Japanese shells. I'll probably get it anyway and find it out by myself.

Another question - I apologise for it, this is my very first Mega CD :p - what do I need in order to play original American SEGA CD games on my Japanese Mega CD 2? I read good things about the Tototek Mega Cart, so I'm leaning to buy one, especially since the Datel CDXs are insanely expensive at the moment (something like 200+ euros for the CDX Plus... Sweet Jesus!).

Either a hardware modded BIOS, or an Everdrive to load a modded BIOS. Possibly also a region-modded Megadrive.

So, a Mega Cart alone wouldn't do a thing?
I've just spoken with some guy at Tototek as well, and he said it would be enough to play - say - games such US Eternal Champions CD on my unmodded Japanese MD2+MCD2.
I'm talking about this cart here: http://www.sega-16.com/2007/03/sega-gear-tototek-mega-cart/
It seems able to do alot of other stuff, but I'm only interested in playing original American games on my Japanese console.

Yes, it would work with the Mega Cart. I got one I could sell if you want one.

Rip the game to your computer, change the region code on the ISO, re-burn it. There's no copy protection on the Sega CD. ezpz

Been a while since I've done it, so I don't remember the programs to Google. Wasn't too hard to do in a hex editor as well though, IIRC.

I know I may sound weird, but I'm one of those who really enjoys to play with the original carts/CDs. Even if I own the actual game, the idea of playing it though an ISO or an Everdrive genuinely turns me off.

Scored a great deal on Thunder Force III today, which means I've completed a small goal of mine ;)

w4G0SW2h.jpg

We need to have a Thunder Force week/month or something to see how many people can clear all 3 games.

Intriguing Sonic 1 ROM hack. Seems to be using actual sprite rotation instead of just pre-made frames at different angles? Also seems to have more animation frames in general.

Yeah you can really tell from the running animation. Also has wind blowing his spines back. Too bad there arent any SegaCD releases...i'd really like to see the SegaCD homebrew scene take off with platformers.

That running animation is real nice, boss is trippy and music is good. We could've had something wonderful on the 32X. Yeah we need a SCD homebrew scene to
blow up.

I only beat Thunder Force II once. That level towards the end where it speeds up like 10 times normal always killed my stash of extra lives. I actually called the 800-USA-SEGA back in the day to get help and the guy basically gave me the 90s equivalent of "lol get gud".

Anyway, my wife is getting me one of the bootleg (?) reproduction consoles with 80 games built in for Xmas. I take it these are kinda shit, but do they actually work? If I buy Revenge of Shinobi, I'd like to be able to actually play it.

And if anyone can point me in a direction where I can get the original version with Batman, Godzilla, etc it'd be much appreciated. I have the game on Wii VC but it's the pink Spiderman version.

Heres one.

& those All-in-One consoles are shit. The controllers lose the connection real easily and the music sounds like a garbage disposal. It's the thought that counts though.

Thanks for the link. I ended up buying it. My wife was gonna buy a copy for $125 from an Amazon seller and I thought that was way too high, even for my favorite game on the system.

I figured the repro system would be kinda shit, cause I have some of the plug and play joysticks and most weren't great. I did have one that was nice, the controller was just like a real one, but there were only 6 games on it.

But like you said, it's the thought that counts. She actually wants to play some Sonic on Xmas, so hopefully it's at least playable.

I've got SMD with 20 games in, but I'm not a big fan of used things, so decided to buy this stuff.
Controller is real pain in the ... It works like remote control for tv, but much worse. I am looking for wire controller + extension cable to it. Unfortunately controller has only 70 cm cable and extension 1,8m. I would like to buy something longer.

Man, I don't remember Phantasy Star IV being this hard. Maybe that's why I never finished it back in the day. Really liking it a few hours in, though. Nice change of pace after the pretty easy Chrono Trigger which I played last.

Guys I have a question.
I am considering to buy Syndicate. I played in this great title about 20 years ago on Amiga, but I don't know one, important thing for me.
Does Syndicte on Genesis/MD has save option? I mean passwords, codes, anything? It's rather long game.
Flashback, Urban Strike or other games had passwords after beating every level, but Syndicate?

Mystic Defender was pretty cool. Super hard though, never got very far in it...

Really? Where are you struggling? It might be because I'm overly familiar with this game but I find it rather easy. Last time I played I didn't get a single game over screen haha.

Password system.

Isn't Mystic Defender the game that has two different versions of the final boss. One with nudity and one without. I get pretty far but have yet to get to the end, it can get pretty tough.

Yes. Indeed, it is: https://tcrf.net/Mystic_Defender (guess it may contain 16 bit NSFW spoilers... :D ).
Aside from the Japanese version being pretty different in places - and uncensored right off the bat - it looks like the first print/early realease of Mystic Defender got the nudey bits intact.

Worth noting that Kujaku Ou 2 (that's the Japanese title), had some nudity on the back of the boxart and on the manual as well.

I haven't hit a game over screen yet. But, I've had to run out of the last couple of dungeons multiple times because a party member goes down and there's seemingly no way to revive them this early in the game. I'm not very far in yet. Just got Rika and Seed self destructed.

I think I made it shortly after
Alys died
as a kid. Don't know how far in that was. I don't want to lose her. Her basic attacks hitting every enemy is the shit.

At this point in the game, Hahn should be carrying shields and using magic only. Rika should be handling most healing duties, but she can't revive people from death. (Chaz learns Rever for that, but I'm not sure at what level.) It's debatable as to whether Alys should dual wield boomerangs or go with 1 boomerang + 1 shield; I prefer the former since she's not that frail, but the damage boost isn't amazing either.

Not sure if you're aware, but the order of your party matters. In battle, the enemies' single-target attacks tend to skew toward your party lead, so it can help to have someone with high defense, HP, or specific resistances in the front. On the other hand, the chance of an ambush at the start of an encounter is dependent on your party lead's speed; if someone fast is in front, then you have a high chance of getting a freebie turn, but if someone slow is in front, then the reverse is true.

PSIV is usually a war of attrition. Don't be stingy when it comes to spending TP in dungeons; it's usually appropriate to dedicate about half of it for the dungeon and half of it for the boss. Also remember that multi-target skills really should be used liberally throughout dungeons; very few boss encounters have more than 1 enemy present.

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
^ Some good advice. Though I'd be stingy with Rika's TP in some cases to make sure she can spam heals on the major bosses (specifically, in order of story progression,
Zio
,
Dark Force (all versions)
, and
Lassic/Lashiec
. For most dungeons though, I agree, you can spend some of it no problem.

I always go dual boomerangs with Alys, but on my last playthrough I went with 1 boomerang and 1 shield for Kyra and even go full shields for bosses of course) since she's got decent magic to use instead of melee attacks and her defense/HP was on the lower end compared to Alys, and that worked well.

Moon Dews also revive members (with low health, and Sol Dews for a full health revive) if you're in a pinch, though I don't know when you start getting those. I'd also hoard the Sol Dews for tougher boss battles though (as well as Star Dews).
