Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I'm have a weird control issue with a Genesis game - Ms. Pac Man. I can barely register up or down during gameplay. It's not a controller issue as far as I can tell. I've played a few other games and they seem to register up/down just fine (most notably Revenge of Shinobi, jumping between upper and lower levels). I've cleaned the cart and the cart slot and no change. Oddly, it seems to work slightly better when I apply a lighter touch - but it still doesn't always work.

Does this game just have shit controls? Anyone have it? It looks and sounds great, and I like the idea of the new mazes. I just can't play them...

I think I heard Ms. Pac-Man is one of those games that doesn't play nice with a six-button controller unless you hold MODE down while booting it up, although I haven't broken out my copy to verify.

Mrs. Pac-man is better with the 3 button controller. I have 2 different 6 button controllers and pressing them makes her always go to the right. And yes up and down does not register well. I have to carts for some reason.

EGM Fact-File and Review Crew on Mystic Defender.

sorry to bump a post from two days ago. just got excited seeing mystic defender and EGM.

Steve, Ed, Martin and Sushi X... ahh... those were the days.

(Martin was into shooters), now called shoot em ups thanks to FPS Grrr.

these retro appreciation threads are awesome.

I tried Mystic Defender. Didn't like it too much. Charging gets really boring really quick. And the jumping feels a little loose.

So, I just ended up re-playing Contra Hard Corps for the umpteenth time.

Holding Mode worked like a charm. Problem solved. FWIW I am using the official 6-button controller with turbo (is that the only one?), model MK-1470. Not being very familiar with the Genesis, I didn't even know this was a thing. Don't think I even noticed the Mode button before...

I tend to forget the MODE button is there as well, even though some games actually use it as a legitimate button (e.g.: Lost Vikings, Doom 32X).

These are the 2 Six button controllers I own. The one on the right is what I use exclusively. I haven't found a use for the turbo button on the left controller.

I have used the mode button on Lost Vikings with no problems but Mrs. Pac-man still plays like crap. Unless i use 3 button. I don't know.

Yeah the one at right is the one I have. It looks like it might have been the one that came with the CDX? Or came out around that time? Bummer that it won't work for you with Ms Pac Man.

3 button works fine and switching from a 6 to a 3 doesn't bother because I'm not playing that much Mrs. Pacman these days.

Thoughts on buying complete Genesis games vs just carts? I'm starting to buy games and I have a few loose and a few with case/manual. Loose carts are so cheap. But many CIBs are cheap, too. I don't see myself being a serious Genny collector like I am with NES stuff. I don't even care much about the condition of the carts....

As someone who only plays the games I just buy whatever is the cheapest. So far it's been only carts with the exception of Thunder Force 4 that I found a cheap boxed copy of. An added benefit is less stuff that need storage.

I've always bought Mega Drive stuff boxed complete because aside from a few games (Mega Man The Wily Wars etc) everything is very reasonably priced. Plus because of the sturdy cases it's easier to get stuff in great condition.

Picked up Hellfire and Gunstar Heroes Classic Collection.
Haven't been able to play them yet, but I've played the PlayStation Store version of Gunstar Heroes before. Now I finally get to play it on the original hardware.

Kinda curious about Hellfire too, it's supposed to be hard.

Everything I have is boxed, most have manuals but that is not a priority when I pick something up. If I see it with the manual and box, sweet! Most of my N64 & SNES games are loose. Genesis for the most part is much cheaper, even CIB.

Hellfire is deceiving. The first level is simple, but the difficulty ramps up real fast. One of the hardest games I own.

I remember Hellfire being hard as, well, hell. Interesting weapon system with different shooting angles being selectable and not power ups.
I can't stand shmups that restarts the level when you die though, vaguely remember there not being any check points.

Not one of the better games on the system imo.

Thats part 2 right? Its tons better than the first.

Yes, it is. I'll take that as a recommendation and buy it then.

Yeah its really hard to find apparently, but from what i've heard/seen, it has a really cool soundtrack and some great action going for it.

I'm in heaven guys.
I treated myself with a Japanese Mega Drive 2 + Mega CD 2 combo, this Christmas, and yesterday I ran my first Mega Drive retrogaming night, after SO damn long. Bare Knuckle III, Street Fighter II' Plus and Final Fight CD. It's been a blast!
And holy shit, didn't expect the good old MD being able to produce such a crisp, beautiful RGB picture. It looks gorgeous, even on my very mid-range Sony Trinitron.

The one on the left is the one by Sega, released for MK and SFII. It's an incredible controller and is my favorite non-analog controller ever. The one on the right, though, is the one included with the Majesco Genesis 3. It's okay, I guess, but not as comfortable as Sega's model in my opinion... and I don't like the look with all 6 buttons being the same color, the Sega one looks nicer.

Yeah Genesis/MD is probably one the most identifiable RGB upgrades. Still waiting for the time to be right to upgrade my PC engine.

Have some questions. I did research them but wanted GAF to double check.

1.) The Game Genie lets you play imports, correct?
2.) Model 1/2 controller works on a Model 3 and vice versa, correct?
3.) Model 2 and 3 share the same AV output, correct?

Thanks for answering.
