Yea, the game may just be the best beat em up I've played. Here's a photo I took of the ending screen for the scanlines screenshots thread:

Let me know if you're ever in my neck of the woods and we'll play this one over a bear or two.

And that goes for the rest of you: If any of you retrogaffers visit NYC and want to hit up some arcades and grab some bear, send me a PM. There's a lot of great arcade cabinets in this city.

I'm actually going up to NYC the weekend of 1/9, but I'm taking my wife to a Broadway show and skating at Rockefeller. Although if you know of any good restaurants near Times Square, let me know.

Stuck in my wishlist for way too long, I finally added Final Fight CD to my collection, and played my first couple of matches last night. I love FF - it's easily my favourite arcade classic ever - and I realise I'm totally biased here, but this Mega CD port has some of the most incredible sprites I've ever seen on the system. Even after playing Bare Knuckle III, it still blows my mind.

^awesome! hope you got a good deal

okay so really dumb question but where the fuck are the shops in Shining Force CD? just not seeing them where they usually are...

also this might be IrishNinja

I think I got a fair deal, on the whole. The Japanese Mega CD 2 is pretty much mint - only the box shows a tiny bit of aging, yet it's still in perfectly good conditions, while the system itself looks brand new - and the set is 100% complete. I paid around 215 euros for that and Final Fight CD (excellent conditions too, with spine card). The Japanese Mega Drive 2, on the other hand, was much cheaper, as it cost me around 80 euros. Once again, the set is complete and in very good conditions.
I'm quite the anal collector, so I ended up waiting for a LONG time before finding the two systems in the conditions I wanted, at the price I was willing to pay, and in my area too. And yeah, I'm genuinely super happy with my purchase, even though I still want to add a Japanese Model 1 Mega Drive to the family (MD2 and MCD2 look better combined, in my opinion, but the audio output of the MD2 truly is quite rough).

Which is better, Super Street Fighter II or Championship Edition?
Quick and dirty. Super is the better game, but the porting of Plus/Special Champion Edition is superior, IMO.

I hope that MCD2 included the MD extender piece in that case although there are a couple being sold separately on eBay atm just in case.

I haven't really played much of SF on the Mega Drive before but since I have a 6-button controller I figured I'd just go for it. The voices in the CE game sound terrible.

Yep it did. The extender, the metal plates, the screws. It's all in.
I'm one of those looking for matching serial numbers on the manual and the system too, just to give you the idea. :D

Well, they're even more terrible in Super, if this can help. :p
They're both solid ports, if you ask me, but whereas Plus/SCE manages to look quite impressive on the Mega Drive, Super feels like it's a bit too much for the system. It's one of those games I'd recommend to get for the Super Famicom, if you have the chance.

Hm, I just passed on a 150 € 32x on ebay. I see units coming up starting from 200 € onwards...but the games are so expensive!

I remember Toys R Us selling 32X units for $20 back in the day. The only reason I got one was to play Doom which at the time I thought was the superior version.

Were the voice samples in Super better? IIRC it was a 40 meg game, so I'd hope so.

Nope. They're significantly lower quality. The PCM usage in SSF2 is some of the most amazingly unoptimized and poorly thought out I have ever seen. Almost every sound effect is PCM-based in that version. The space for the samples totalled at something like 700kb which is like 50% more than the entire Sonic 1 cart. They could have redone a lot of the sounds in FM like the thunder and hadoken sounds in the animated intro, or the ambient sounds in the Hong Kong stage, etc etc, which would have both sounded better and saved up on space which could ultimately have been used to improve the fidelity of the existing samples.

It's like they just indiscriminately transfered over the whole sample reel from the arcade board so they didn't have to bother with actually designing sound effects.

Also I think that the unique echoed KO screams for each individual character accounts for around 1/3rd of the space occupied by the samples. That's just incredibly badly conceived in itself.

Actually there's a really great NYC thread in off topic that I suggest you check out. It has a complete list of GAF-vetted things to do and places to eat by native New Yorkers. I'd link you but I'm on mobile right now.

Definitely check it. I've learned a lot about my own city from that thread and found so many cool places from it.

And to be honest, I don't hang in Times Square much so I'd rather not make a suggestion.

Also if you're going to be in Rockefeller, definitely check out the Nintendo World Store right next to the ice rink! They have Miyamoto's drawings up and his original level designs on graph paper from Super Mario Bros. on display right now. I posted some pictures of it in the Retro GAF Unite! Thread.

Cheers! Enjoy your visit.

Yes, you do.

And yes, I can't think of a better beat em up out there. I was actually floored by how great it was and ended up investing tons of coins into it. The barcade itself that it's in also has a 4player Daytona USA cabinet, TMNT, X-Men, Contra, Double Dragon, Discs of Tron (this game is rad as fuck and possibly my favorite arcade game ever), Punch-Out!!!, Vs. Super Mario Bros, Altered Beast, Space Harrier, Ms. Pac-man, Pac-Man battle arcade, and Donkey Kong (just to name a few).

You get the point, it's a great place to drink and play. And all credits are 25 cents like the good lord intended.

So definitely, hit me up. It'd be cool to meet up with some Gaffers at the arcade.

...so nobody here played Shining Force CD huh

also my game started freezing up the other day, sucks! everything ive read says i prolly need to clean the laser, using a disc to do that tonight & prolly do the old sega trick of cleaning the genny/CD system contacts with an eraser or something. it's nothing severe so far, hoping it's just this stuff and not capacitors/etc

I'm visiting home for the holidays, and I dug out my Model 1 and my Sony 20" PVM and got everything hooked up with RGB. It's so good to be back. I've found most of my carts in storage, but there's a few that are still hiding out somewhere...

SoR2 has some killer kick drums and bass parts. And I forgot how much Shantae looks inspired by Monster World IV.

I got nostalgic just reading this. There's nothing like playing in the room where you grew up after being away.

At some point. Im still sticking to my series progression rule.

I still need to replace my AD&D Sega CD disc since somehow it got a radial scratch that just makes all audio skip.

I played it, but its been a long time since I'd played it last. I think I only ever played through it once and that was back when I got it back in 95. When I want to replay a Shining Force, I tend to go with one of the mainline entries.

I ordered Pit Fighter. I know most people regard it as one of the worst games ever, but it's one of my favorites. I have odd tastes, I know. But it was only $6 CIB. I also snagged a CIB Forgotten Worlds, another favorite from my high school days.

I got Revenge of Shinobi from the link someone kindly posted and it came in time for Christmas, so I spent Christmas morning playing it. Got to the final boss but didn't have enough lives banked to beat him. Will have to give it another go soon. Really surprised I remembered how to get through the maze before the boss.

Pit Fighter on the SNES is the worst version and I believe the Genny version is the best of the bunch. I love Forgotten Worlds, it's a great port of the arcade and is possible to complete it solo with some practice. I think I gave you the link, the version with Spiderman, Godzilla? Glad you like it.

Yup, it had all the bootleg characters in it. My wife was watching me play and I got to the Spiderman/Batman boss fight and she was like "this is the weirdest game ever".

SNES Pit Fighter is horrible. I got it from my local mom and pop game rental store and walked back 2+ miles in a Minnesota winter to try and get my money back. I think even the SMS version was better.

I believe sega had the rights to at least Spider-Man when they made the game. Probably not Rambo, Batman or Godzilla though.

They didn't have the rights to any of them as far as I know. A later revision of the game features a trademark notice for Spider-Man right at the front. That was when they got the rights.

Yeah, they didn't have the rights at first. According to the Japanese manual for the first version of the game, the Spiderman/Batman fight is actually against a shapeshifter. It was after Sega got the license for Spiderman for Spiderman Vs the Kingpin, they changed him in Revenge of Shinobi.

Just a really odd mess of skirting copyright laws. Even the title screen is ripped from a Sonny Chiba TV series and was changed for the Wii/PS3 versions.

Yeah, they had the rights for Spiderman. They mention his name directly in the instruction manual and there's also a copyright notice. Spidey was kept in the game even though the bootleg characters were tweaked to avoid lawsuits for the Sega Classics, Sega 6-Pak, and Sega CD versions. But after Sega's license ran out (and I'm assuming Marvel wanted way more money) Spiderman's name/likeness was removed (changed the costume to pink and changed the attacks IIRC) on the Wii Virtual Console and PS3 versions.

The Terminator boss has always stayed the same, but I guess that's generic enough that no one cares. Same goes for the characters that are supposedly based on Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.

Rambo got a haircut though

Which was odd, because I think Sega actually had the rights because of the Rambo III game.

Maybe it was changed because the hairy Rambo character would glitch sometimes when he moved? Basically the top half would move but the bottom didn't.

Trying to finally play through E-Swat. The level where you have to fly everywhere is really testing my will to continue. That's only like half way through the game too, damn.

Crossposting from the Upscalers thread.
Any of you euroguys is using this thing here? http://en.retrogamesupply.com/colle...all-in-one-for-sega-megadrive-genesis-mega-cd

This would be super convenient to me, but I don't get how I wouldn't need a stepdown converter, with my Japanese MD2 + MCD2.

Any chance this device would also get rid of/reduce the slight buzzing produced by the MD2 throughout the speakers (I've been told it's pretty normal, due to the console model and the fact I'm using an RGB cable too)?
