Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Maybe I'll make a more in depth post later but the Genesis was absolutely the best system of it's time. It's line up was second to none.

Nintendo wished it had 2D platformers like Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Ristar. Even to this day they don't. Mario World, DKC2, and Yoshi's Island were great platformers on their own but they were garbage in comparison, if I'm being honest.

The strong mechanics and smart level design that did the most it could with those mechanics... Holy shit, I'm still stunned at those two games at times and I've played both of them dozens of times to completion.

Speaking of how damn good Sonic 3 & Knuckles level design is... I highly recommend you all check out soniczone0.com if you haven't. It's a fan site that goes into all the little details about classic Sonic level design.

Does anyone here play Puyo Puyo or Mean Bean Machine?

I've played Mean Bean Machine on a few different Sonic/Genesis collections and it's a fun game with friends.

I grew up with Nintendo but games like Ristar and Sonic 3 and Knuckles quickly took my attention. Ristar was a masterpiece and really amazed me as a kid. I wish there was some sort of revival.

I feel like this game is underappreciated.

Question for everyone here: Does anyone have a copy of Virtua Racing? Mine works, but it gets severe graphical issues when running it, like the SVP on it has gone bonkers or something. I'm sure it's worked before, but no dice as of now.

Also, what are the different kinds of ROM carts to get? I've seen the Everdrive mentioned a few times, love to know if there are any others (and about compatibility etc.)

Thanks to Jake from State Farm, i got gifted a free copy of that.
Have you played it yet? And if it's a US copy, is the cartridge silver or black? Mine's a silver one, and it's definitely not a "classics" release or anything like that.

Have a hunch the case was silver as well.

One of the last full-priced games I bought for the MD, from memory.
Edit: Looks like only Australia got the silver cart/box release. Woo!

I freaking LOVE the Mega Drive too, but there is no reason to come with statement like these now 20 years later lol. Both those consoles had amazing games - and the best on each system was not garbage compared to the best on the other one.

I think when i was a kid the EA cardboard boxes were unattractive in the U.S. so i avoided them. I never played desert strike, how is it?

I always enjoyed playing the Strike series on the Genesis. My brother and I love the games. Jungle Strike I have the most memories of but Desert Strike and Urban Strike hold up really well. They are mission based so if you try and do a really high mission you will hit a danger zone and get rocked. So it is best to do the missions in order. Desert Strike is a cheap title to pick up and even a re release in a standard Genesis cart exists just in case you still don't like those yellow EA tabs. ^_^ I didn't play much of the 3D versions of Soviet and Nuclear Strike though. I never gave the games much time. Maybe some day I can sit down and give them another go.

When it comes to best Genesis platformser you can't leave out RKA... unless you consider it an action game I guess.
Let's name all the rad platformers (or platform-likes) that kicked heaps of arse. And exclusive (or better than the other versions in some way).

From the top of my head:
* Rocket Knight series
* Gunstar Heroes
* Sonic series
* Tiny Toon Adventures (the first one?)
* Global Gladiators
* Dynamite Headdy
* Earthworm Jim
* Bubba n Stix
* Ristar
* Castle of Illusion
* Strider
* Pulseman
* Vectorman series
* Shinobi series
* Aladdin
* Contra Hard Corps
* Alien Soldier
* Castlevania Bloodlines
* Quackshot
* Ren and Stimpy

Then please make sure to vote for Ristar et. al in this thread! This goes for everyone in Sega-GAF :)

The best games on the SNES weren't platformers imo. The Super Nintendo's best games certainly can go head to head with Sega's best, no doubt. Like I said, I still feel that most of Nintendo's first party platformers for the SNES were great games in their own right but they simply had nothing on S3&K, Ristar, or a few others that are the peak of their genre.Not trying to incite a stupid console war. Both systems are must owns!

How's it gone south? I just edited my post to remove the system wars-y stuff if that's the problem.
I said before it goes south. And yes editing that post helps. lol

I now really wonder what system wars-y stuff that got edited out :) But yeah, wouldnt mind seeing the game of the month!

March Game of the Month
April Game of the Month
May Game of the Month
June Game of the Month

One month cool down on the following games

*X-Men 2: The Clone Wars
*Road Rash 2
*Rolo to the Rescue
*Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf

Sega Genesis Club Guidelines

The nominated title should be readily available via standard
channels such as eBay, for a reasonable price (Maximum $30,
preferably less to give the majority of people a chance to join
in). The title should be a licensed Genesis/Megadrive title (No hacks,
homebrew, multicarts). Only exception is unlicensed, but readily available titles.
The title should be available in English, and if not, it should at the very least be
playable without knowledge of Japanese.

Due to the nature of the Club, excessively long or grind-heavy
games such as RPGs will be excluded.

Selection Process (see above)
The first week of each month, the selection process for the following
month commences. The first five games suggested that have not
yet been played, and were not nominated the month before will be
added to the list and will be voted on. So be sure to come in early to
nominate your favorites!

On the 7th day of the month, or when we reach five nominations (whichever comes
first) the nominations are tallied in the following manner:
The list of nominees are checked for infringements of the above
guidelines, and any not meeting the requirements are removed.
The voting list will be shuffled for each member voting.
Voting will take place until the 20th day of the month, at which point the poll will
close and the votes will be tallied.
The winner will be announced as soon as the tally is counted so that members
will have time to pick up the winning game.

Probably will skip this one unless I can find it at a really good price. Went a bit nuts and bought too many games over the past couple of months so I have a big backlog and balance on my credit card. Plus I have been cheating on my Genesis and playing Bloodborne on PS4 ;)

Nice, I voted for Biohazard Battle! Looking forward to playing it.

I'm also going to try to play Quackshot this weekend too... I haven't played much Genesis recently because I played a lot of Dreamcast this month, and was too lazy to switch my Framemeister settings from 480p back to 240p ready, haha. But now that my Dreamcast has died...

Boooooooooooooooo. I could never get into Bio-Hazard Battle. I guess now is a good as time as any to give it another shot though.

On nomination news, i'm gonna pick something truly weird. Lets get some Crue Ball GOING IN HERE!

Sell the PS4 while it's still worth something and buy genesis game with that money. You can get a PS4K later down the line lol.

I approve of this advice.

Anyways, Bio Hazard Battle is of course the only one of these games I dont own :( But guess thats just a good reason to get it!

Edit: Im nominating Alisia Dragon!

I'll check the local comic shop and see if they have a copy. I like shmups and don't want to be a sore loser.
