Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Never played it, but it's pretty well reviewed - but the game is going for an insane amount on Amazon/Ebay, loose carts for $200 and the like...

I like shooters, but to me platformers will be my fav genre ever!
You should try Rolo, then :V

I did notice some guy on Classic Gaming Room absolutely hates it, but I can't really empathize. It's a hard game, sure, but that's kind of par for the course that generation, and the rest of his tirade is extremely exaggerated.

Sort of a puzzle platformer. You're an elephant whose friends and mother got captured by some sort of circus, who thus goes on a quest to save them all. Every level thus has you defeating an animal catcher to get his key, then running by every cage in the level to rescue your friends, get a puzzle piece for doing so (ie: unlock more of the world map), and leave. The last three animals you rescued also follow you, and you can optionally switch to them; each has a unique trait that lets them access areas the others (Rolo himself, notably) cannot, so you'll be doing a lot of this. Bunnies jump high, beavers can swim (water instantly kills anyone else), moles can dig, squirrels can climb, and (once you've unlocked them, anyway) porcupines can fit into small holes. It's pretty good stuff, only really let down by the lack of a save feature (the game can be pretty long if it's your first time).

It's made by Amiga devs, and you can kinda tell with the art style. Same guys who did James Pond, too (right down to
a cameo in the extremely-brief moon stages
), though JP never quite grabbed me in the same way (might just be due to nostalgia, I dunno).

Also the first EA game I ever owned, back when they weren't quite as evil as they are in the modern day.

This game sounds very interesting, I want to try it now.

I'm sure Sub-Terrania had appeared once or twice in the noms, not sure where it is now though. I'm itching for everyone to see how amazing that title is.

Amiga devs made some of the best MD games. See above ;)

My good friend Yoshi (the poster here, not the dinosaur) wrote in his GOT4G post about a game called Soleil/Crusader of Centy that I've never heard of. Anyone here play it? Would you also recommend it? I'm always looking for Zelda-likes. Thanks all!

I think Soleil is extremely overrated actually. Played it about two years ago, and almost fell asleep from the boring level-design, the boring combat (which is also ridden with less than good controls). The game looks great, and it is not bad - just very mediocre.

Great write-up of one of my favorite plattformers on the system!

Sounds like Psycho Fox. With more animals.
And better gameplay.

Way better gameplay :)

And I think I nominated Sub-Terrania. And nominated/voted for the semi-shooter Desert Strike this month.

I trust your taste and I think we usually have similar taste in games. So I really appreciate the info and will not eagerly seek out the game. Thank you! In the meantime, Rolo sounds awesome!

That is nice to hear! Im sure more people in this thread will chime in though - and many will also disagree with me. But yeah, the price is really high these days, so i definitely wouldnt go out of my way to search it up now anyways.

I know it's meant to be read as 'it's almost hard to believe these two games were on the same system' (in comparison to Curse). But the post you quoted makes you sound like you are putting to shame Gaiares vs ThunderForce IV. :p

And... Arrived today!

Nice pickups! Can't go wrong with any of those (as I'm sure you know).

As for Genesis shmups, I can't think of one I've played yet that is truly bad. Wasn't a huge fan of less traditional ones like Sub-Terrania, but still not *bad*.

Racketboy has a nice list:

Love the soundtracks on most of them. :)

Unrelatedly, I was enjoying the Genesis version of this last night. Interesting to see the graphical and audio differences:

We need to all unite and push a shooter through.

Thanks to Jake from State Farm, i got gifted a free copy of that.

I voted for Thunder Force II as well.=O
yeah, that's a good game. i still play it often.

I think when i was a kid the EA cardboard boxes were unattractive in the U.S. so i avoided them. I never played desert strike, how is it?

Thanks! I almost forgot how good it feels to collect for the MD, especially when you find what you're looking for, all in one deal and for a truly awesome price. Really hope to be this lucky with Vampire Killer too, eventually. :D

I don't think i could ever state how much i love PSIV. The only question that will linger on for me, until the end of time is, what would that game have been like had it been the Sega CD game it was originally planned to be?

Nice! I love that box art on all 3 games.

So, odd request for you guys, but if anyone has a few minutes and digs Genesis music:

I work for 8 Bit Evolution, and we are currently doing homebrew titles for old retro systems, and next two big ones are both Genesis-based. I've recently uploaded the music to Soundcloud, and i figured you guys would be able to tell me what you guys think (i didn't do the music personally, i'm mainly handling PR and production stuff)

Here's a link to our account, Ruthless Racer and Viking Democracy are the games

Here's a link to our coming soon page so you can see what they look like and all that jazz

What are you guys talking about, Gaiares is an awesome game. I looked for a 60fps longplay video with little or no commentary. Yeah it's windowed, but that was the best I could find.

I don't get it :D

I see. This is an IrishNinja-level misunderstanding. Out of context it looked like your post was shitting on Gaiares (a 1990 release) for not looking as good as TF4 (a 1992 release). Then again, they're both 8 Meg games which really does make TF4 that much more impressive.

Quick question about "Crying" / "Bio-Hazard Battle":

I bought a loose cart of it long ago...thought it was Japanese....but the music runs waaay too fast on my 60Hz modded PAL Mega Drive.
Is there some sort of incompatibility or do I have some 50Hz-optimized Asia version? Any ideas?

Playing with my Everdrive and the Japan version:
You need to flick the switch before starting the console. The music is optimised in this one: the game detects the region of the console at boot and adjust the music accordingly. If you change the refresh rate while the console is on, you'll get too fast or too slow music.

Giod to know, thank you!

Just tried it...and the game won't start. It tells me that it won't run on systems sold in Norh America....apparently that's what it thinks my 60Hz EU system is.

Soooo......maybe I'll be more successful on my Mega Drive 2....that one has a language switch next to the 50/60Hz one. It's certainly worth a try. Thanks for the pointer!

It should, this is what I use. I saw the region lock screen but assumed you had a language switch as well.

I encourage you to do the single switch mod for both region and refresh rate. It's just as easy to do and it's much more practical in everyday use. You just switch regions instead of thinking in languages and refresh rates independently.
