Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Yeah, I started it just recently, though I only have it as part of the Monster World Vintage Collection on Xbox 360. I immediately fell in love with the music, the game plays and looks great too. Haven't gotten very far yet but I will continue soon. Such a shame the game was never released in the west until this collection arrived.

Btw, are there any plans for a game of the month for February? January is almost over now.

Holy shit, how did I not know about this? When a friend recommended me the collection a while ago I thought they were talking about the old JP ps2 collection. God I'm a dumb.

i'm trying but so immersed in Y0 at the moment =0

Haha, I can see that! I actually fired up Yakuza 2 a bit today. For some reason I never completed it back in the day. Seems like I got to the final chapter but got lost doing sidestuff lol. Now that i started it up, i feel like i should at least try to complete it. Looks pretty good still!

Was able to complete Wonderboy in Monster World. And damn that final boss was a real bitch to beat. I have no idea why they make bosses that have so many obstacles to piss you off that it basically becomes a question of luck if you can beat it or not - instead of laying out a boss area that is hard but takes skill to navigate and thus beat.

So what is there to say? I think the final few levels of the game are pretty weak, with lots of irritating obstacles like the falling blocks, the ice, jumping (and respawning) enemies and of course that final boss. Wonder Boy 3 on Master System and even Wonder Boy in Monster Land has a better balance to its difficulty and overall better level design imo. Still, the base action-rpg framework, the secrets and the presentation, are all top notch and makes it a pretty fun game for the system imo. Just not as good as the best games in the genre or even its predecessors.

Looking forward to Comix Zone!

I finally beat Wonder Boy in Monster Land today. I have no idea how I beat the last boss, I was getting destroyed over and over again. Landed a series of power attacks to finish it off on my last run. Good game.

So I got a Model 2 Sega Mega Drive that needs fixing. It's able to power on and play sound but there's no video. Bizarre. Gonna open it up later on tonight and inspect it further but anyone came across the same issue? I've cleaned everything so it can't be that. Maybe one of the solder has rotten or something.

Standard advice: Replace the caps.

The AV din port on the back might be messed up. Try to wiggle it with everything on and connected and see if you get a connection. It might be that the video pin has become detached from the board via solder breaking or the pin could be severely oxidized.

Congrats Morfeo.

I couldn't do Wonder Boy since I spent most of the month on Battletoads, which I barely beat a few days ago.

However, Comix Zone is all ready for February, my birthday month!

I got my copy of Beggar Prince finally this week. Ordered it so long ago, it went to my old address. Pretty neat. High quality package.

Thanks Timu. Your achievement definitely was bigger then mine, but Im still pretty happy, as Ive now beaten all Wonderboy-games sans the japan-only MW5.

Since january is coming to an end, I am starting taking nominees for march now. So please give me your nominations!

Guys, I beat the hardest water level ever yesterday.

Which level did you finish? You posted the password to Dark Water, but the images from the end of the game.

If you finished the last level, good job indeed, it's ridiculously hard. If you finished Dark Water, well... the worst is still to come.

By hardest water level, I meant the whole game. The reason I posted the Dark Water password is because it makes me laugh.

Also, I played the Sega CD version and there's a random part in it where they play an extremely low-quality educational movie about dolphins.

I gotcha. Well done then! That game is a beast.

The second Ecco game on Sega CD had CGI videos of the events of the first game. But if it's educational dolphin Sega games you want, look no further than Ecco Jr.

Wonder if anyone can help me with this. My Japanese Megadrive (Model 2) connected with RGB JP21 to the Framemeister, using FBX profiles. However there is some kind of sync issue: with sync at default level "9" the screen flickers and scrolls. When adjusted to around 19/20 the screen is more or less established but still there are still around 2-3 instances per minute of some flicker/instability, quite annoying. I have tried changing sync from auto to manual without any effect. Image looks absolutely perfect for the rest. Anyone can clue me in in possible fixes or what could cause this?

Could it be a RGB cable issue, or power supply possibly?

Congratulations! The CD version is a bit easier than the original cartridge release, though. ;)
That password made me chuckle, too. As with quite a few old games, Ecco's passwords aren't hardcoded words but bitfields represented as letters. If you're interested, there's a program that can show what information they store.

So... someone who understands economics better than I do... How much longer are the prices of old games going to continue to rise? It's getting to the point where any well-known Sega game costs $30 or more. It can't go on forever right? The bubble has to burst eventually.

Economics is a human science. That means that the prices will be what people are willing to pay for the stuff they want in the future. So it's very hard to predict what will happen.

Having said that, I wouldn't bet on it being a bubble that is about to burst any minute now. Resellers are making money out of it, they want to keep it that way. People paid good money for their games too and many aren't just going to throw that "collector value" out of the window when they sell again. And many older games will become even more rare, because copies still end up in the trash.

Even if demand drops dramatically, it's still not going to be super easy to get a hold of a copy of many a retro game. And anything that is difficult to acquire comes at a price.

Anecdotally, retro Japanese PC stuff hasn't been selling as frequently as it used to. This means that outside of things that have an inherent collectors value prices have been slowly dropping. I got Strider X68000 recently for 70. A year ago I saw it go for almost 200.

It's not unusual to see temporary spikes. E.g. around the launch of Metal Gear Solid V, around 5 or so CIB copies of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX) were sold on eBay for between $800-$900. Not what the game usually goes for ($300-$500).

So concerning Japanese PC stuff: I haven't seen MSX prices drop on average tbh.

I'd like to suggest Thunder Force 3 for the vote.

As the breeding ground for Konami, I feel like it's going to be a while before MSX stuff starts going down in price.

Is there a list to check? I tried to check the previous months but it got tedious after a couple dozen pages :/

Anyway, I hope it hasn't been played by the Club yet, but I nominate Marvel Land/Talmit's Adventure. I've started it before but didn't get very far. Cart only game value is OK, right? Otherwise it would exceed $40, sadly.

Oh shoot, I didn't realize that was a rule. I can rescind my nomination for Ristar if it's against the rules.

$40 seems a bit low given the state of the market.

40$ cart only, but lots of people here have Everdrives and should be able to participate anyways.

No problem, we will let it slide for now. The Game Club has been in a transitional face recently with Jake giving the reigns over to me. The point is to let games that loose a vote a month cool down so other games can get a chance.
