Never played Wonder Boy.

I wish Ristar was picked for February since that's my bday month, oh well at least a game that I actually played back when it was new(Comix Zone) was picked.

I briefly played Wonder Boy in Monster World, made it to the Dwarf village, and died ... and ... found out there's no continues or anything? I was in every inn and they asked me if I wanted to save my game, so I assumed I'd continue there? But after I died, all I had was the option to start a new game. Did I miss something or is it really this brutal?

Are you playing on original cartridge? After you die, you should have an option to continue under new game, assuming you saved. If your cartridge's battery is dead, it won't save properly though.

It should have options for New Game and Continue. If you saved at the inn and there's no option to continue your battery is probably dead.

Playing on Mega Everdrive, which seems to be the problem - the ROM I was using isn't compatible with the flashcart, since there's the save function. However I read that there's a patched version available, I'll see if I can find that one.

Awesome pick, I adore WB:MW and not having had a chance to play 3 in the day it's prolly still my favorite in the series. Great music too!

I doubt I'm good enought for a 1cc run.. it's strange, even though I read on Krikzz' forum that a patched version should work, I've tried several, saved at the first inn, then game over'd but I still don't have anything but a New game option at the title screen. It's funny, this is probably the most trouble I've ever had with a patched game.

e: Maybe I'll try the PC Engine version ("Dynastic Hero"), I do believe it's pretty much the same game as this one.

e2: Or the japanese version. I think the save system is a bit different in that one.

I _will_ play this game! It feels like fun.

It will definitely be worth it.

WTF? That's insanity. It's not THAT short either...

I got to the last dungeon in about 5 hours. If I was better and dedicated, I could do it in one sitting I'm sure.

I simply could not get a version running on my Everdrive that would have the save working, so I'm going to bend the rules and play Dynastic Hero (the port on the PC Engine). It's mostly the same game mechanic-wise but I think the story is different and the hero is dressed in a stupid blue beetle armor.

Was able to just start the game today, and man is it beautiful and plays well! Hate the Ocarina stuff though, do i really have to write down a ton of songs? Anyways, really like the game so far, and its a nice nod to the older games that the starting screens are just like Wonderboy 2 and 3.

The Ice Castle is rough guys.

That's one of the places where I died. It was a really stupid death too. I was saving my potion and ended up dying before I could use it.

You just need to do the three songs. After that you can pretend that it never existed.

Ah thats nice to hear, I actually managed to remember all those three and get through that dungeon, so that means Im finished with the Ocarina. Kinda amazing that role the Ocarina plays in this game btw. No doubt a certain more famous developer than Westone copied this idea in Links Awakening and more famously Ocarina of Time.

The flute in Link to the Past is also an ocarina right? Probably around that time there was a lot of interest in it as a musical instrument in Japan. Maybe because it's a simple and old instrument with magical associations.

I never thought about that in Link to the Past, but considering it, yeah, I think you are right. It just seems so strange considering I had never even heard about the instrument before those games. Maybe something one of those gaming historians like Jermey Parish or Chris Kohler should look into it.

Guys, is Japanese Story of Thor playable/import friendly? I'm considering to pick that version up, since I'm having quite a hard time to find even a decent looking Beyond Oasis on sale (and I'm very nitpicky, so I tend to ignore anything below very good/excellent conditions).
Related: were the 'vanilla' print and the one that came with the special pin two different releases, in Japan, or is the latter how the game was supposed to be sold, and the auctions on eBay that don't come with the extra thingy simply are not complete?
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried patching the game yourself? I just gave it a try on my Mega Everdrive X3 and the unpatched game stops after pressing start at the title screen but the patched game works fine and also retains saves. I'm using it on a PAL Mega Drive if it makes a difference.

I think I'll take part in this month's game club myself. I played a couple of minutes already but may restart once my original version arrives.

Yeah, I did try. Patched or unpatched, they do work the same, but after saving at the first inn and then dying, the option to continue just isn't there. I'm thinking I'm doing something wrong since so many people are reporting that the patched version works just fine. I have SRAM turned on on my everdrive (X7) menu too. And using a modded PAL megadrive. What region setting you had on? Dunno if that would make a difference.

Here are my settings. Maybe they will help you. I didn't select any special options though.

OS Version is 3.02.

Settings are the same, but I do have an older OS. I have to see if that would help. I bought mine last september but doesn't seem like it's the latest. Gotta see if maybe that would fix it.

Nope, even with the newest OS it's still a no-go, tried with the rom you sent me. Pretty puzzling. I was thinking it might be the Everdrive, but then again, I've been playing Monster World IV and it saves just fine.

e: With the latest Everdrive there's the in-game menu and save states, but they don't seem to work with this game either - it freezes whenever I save or try to load. Also used that function in other games like Twinkle Tale successfully.

Then I'm out of ideas. As a last resort you could ask around on the official Everdrive forums, or maybe even ask Krikzz directly. It's really puzzling though.

Of course, but after selling my collection of games once, buying them again would be going a bit backwards.

I'll ask around, but in the meantime, I guess I will have to get good at this game!

Guys, there's an easier solution to a game not working properly on an Everdrive....
To be honest it wouldn't be a big deal if it didn't work for me either because I'm expecting a copy of the real game tomorrow. I was just curious why it wouldn't work for him.

Really hope you manage to figure it out TeaJay so we can have you in the Club this month. Unfortunately I have no experience with Everdrives so cant help myself.

Emulators coughcoughcough

Yeah, yeah, but I mean, I got all this great equipment, my PVM, modded Megadrive, Everdrive, a comfy couch, an original controller in hand, (and a beer) so I'd like to use it!

Wonder Boy is a good game though from what I had time to play (past the first Inn, which I've made it to about a 100 test runs now) so I will return to it one way or another.

Ok, I'm trying to fit Wonder Boy in my schedule since I'm trying to beat Battletoads and trying to 1CC Contra 3 without the crush missiles, plus it being an RPG means I have to find a way to be able to play it in time.

Comix Zone for next month is guaranteed though!

How's everyone doing with Wonder Boy? I just beat the first boss and used the ocarina codes from here. I'm wondering though, how was I supposed to figure out the correct sequence? Do the villagers tell you? I didn't actually check and can't go back anymore.

One of the villagers tells you and makes you repeat it for her.

I'm getting close to the end of the game (I think), and
that jumping section with the moving platforms and the miniboss you have to repeat is incredibly frustrating. I had to resort to save states after the 100th failed attempt.

That's basically the last dungeon. That part can be frustrating for sure but I ended up enjoying it. It only took me about 10 tries but I'm playing on real hardware on a CRT. That probably makes it a lot more tolerable. At least you don't have to backtrack too much.

I just finished the game today. Solid game, with some really cool moments, but hoo boy I was getting frustrated towards the end.

I finished WBiMW today. It's been 22-23 years since I last finished this game. I did play it when it was released on the Wii VC, but I got stuck. I had the Oasis boots, but I was still not able to cross the desert for some reason. Never figured out why.

Did not remember how ridiculous that last full dungeon and the final boss were (at least compared to the rest of the game which was pretty easy).

Still, the game holds up pretty well, I think.

Quick question, Genesis-GAF.

Any of you - with an originally brand new, US Eternal Champions - can help me to figure out whether or not it came with its poster, other than the manual and the Genesis 6-buttons controller ad?
I know the PAL version did, and there is an American version of Eternal Champions poster/catalogue too, but all the auctions that claim for the game to be 'complete', only show the manual and the controller flyer, so I'm a bit puzzled. I remember other Genesis titles - such as Jurassic Park and the first X-Men - included their respective posters, but I can't find solid informations on Eternal Champions.

Thanks in advance!

so a mod over at sega-16 got me playing Sonic 3 Complete, and man this thing's cool - has a ton of options too! i chose to play the non-released way, i guess that's the intended one, it's got one zone down as "prototype" and i'm told it's the intended order. should be cool!

also, i literally have "get every chaos emerald in sonic 2" as a new year's resolution, so this is the year that finally happens! i just have to ditch tails, i think.
