Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Okay, I laughed pretty hard at that.

No jokes... Didn't even try to crop it and pretend I performed better. :D
The final zone munched out all my lives plus a whole continue. I beat Robotnik with my last life and zero rings.
Intense shit, after more than two decades.

At least I still can get all the damn gems, lol.

Still a bit rusty - that final zone kicked me in the nuts so hard... You can tell by looking at my pathetic score - but this is what I've got out of my Sonic playthrough, last night:

Game's so good.

(crossposting from the scanline thread)

No shame in that! You got the Chaos Emeralds in the end, which is probably more then most people can claim. Reminds me when I did a run back in '14 and got this as my result. (Crappy cell pic of a PVM @_@)

Wow, amost there... :D
That's impressive.

To be honest, I did decently - around 13 lives and 2 continues left - until Scrap Brain Zone 2. I forgot alot of tricks and traps, and that cost me a few lives here and there. Then SB3 happened and, oh my goodness, I totally lost it. :D
Cheap deaths, no rings, the adrenaline rush due to being almost at the end... I reached Final Zone with only one life left, which I quickly said bye to, as it took me a while to remember Robotnik's patterns. The epilogue was pretty lame... No rings and the score from just beating the boss, I guess.

I'm definitely going to try that again with fresh muscle memory, and see if I can do better.

wow congrats. i remember finishing it without Chaos Emeralds.

Haha, thanks Dave but I didn't achieve anything outstanding.
At least, scanlines turned out nice, in that picture. :D

People care about score in Sonic games?

Actually, I didn't. Just interesting to see what you got at the end of the game and how many lives you have left IMO. I found it pretty cool the video I linked had a similar amount of lives but beat my score. You wonder "What could I have done better?"

Hey I just received my Beggar Prince game, yay! And it's in a cardboard box, boo!

It's my first Megadrive Genesis cardboard box. Looking at the description on their site again, they do say it comes in a box, but the photo is still of the old plastic shell. Oh well.

A cardboard box? That's disappointing. I'm still waiting for my copy but I have to say I'm not looking forward as much anymore :/ I'm also disappointed in their ordering process. No emails whatsoever that they shipped the order or that they even received it in the first place. I doubt I'll order there again.

I haven't been around much, but that doesn't mean I stopped picking up games lol
This isn't everything, but I'm very excited to add these into my Genesis collection.

The fact that I waited this long to play Toe Jam and Earl, is ridiculous haha

I've tried to remain focused and just hunker down on the rest of what I want to pick up. Almost done with my want list.

Yeah, I know the drill. :) Each time I look at my Japanese MD wish list, I cry inside a little (Vampire Killer...).
Plus, I just started collecting for the Genesis as well. A CIB Game Genie is on the way to my door - it's been trickier than I thought, to find a complete set in the conditions I wanted - with Red Zone and the original Desert Strike already waiting on the shelves. Ideally, Eternal Champions and Rolling Thunder III will be next.

I just finished my Desert Strike Collection about 2 weeks ago and I still need Red Zone.

In Sonic 1, all they do is give you a better ending.
i didn't know that, i thought it was just bonus for more points.
thanks for the link!

the scanlines a so pretty =)
Hey! You guys know what today is?

Ristar_final.PNG
damn, i still need to grab a copy

Chun Li's birthday
LOL
I have just 2 days to play through Ristar before Zelda consumes me like Yakuza did. Let's do this.
just too many games to play!!!

Started Ristar today. I only recently bought it so I think I've only gotten through the water level before. I got to the music stage. I'm loving this game so far. The music is top notch Genesis stuff. I'm hoping I can finish it tomorrow before I get engrossed in the Switch.

sir, you are dedicated =)

Man, the boss of level 5 + beginning of level 6 really did a number on me. I was able to get back in the groove though.

Update

Finished.

Tips for the last boss:
Take advantage of the attack where he surrounds himself with orbs and fires them at you. If you grab them midair, they will drop stars. Keep doing this until he drops a blue one and then move on to the next phase. It won't go away. For the final part, it's easier to dodge his lightning attack by moving left. Stay on the right side of the screen and learn the pattern for when he will do that versus the black hole or a pause.

Wow that was fast Laev, congrats!

Did anybody manage to beat Comix Zone btw? I got to level 4, and im going to give it a few more runs this weekend before starting Ristar.

Btw, we also need to start the voting process for april, so i guess its time for you guys to come up with nominees!

I needed to finish it before tonight when I get Zelda. After what happened with Yakuza 0, I don't want to take chances. As for Comix Zone. I kept dying and gave up because it was so close to the end of the month. I only got to level 3.

I wonder how bad those wireless controllers are.

You'd be surprised, they are actually pretty good.
Sure, if you're one of those who handle a controller so the top ends up pointing upwards, to the ceiling, don't even bother. They need to be kept in line with the receiver.
That said, they are like a slightly bigger version of the standard 6 buttons controller, with a bit of extra weight added by the batteries on the back.

nice haul! didn't know about the wireless controllers, neat =)
Thanks Dave. It's all stuff I've got from January (controllers) to this very morning (Game Genie).
The wireless joypads - I'm talking about the official SEGA branded ones - came out everywhere (US, Europe and Japan).

I beat it pretty early into February, but I think I was the only one.

I did a run of Ristar last night, I've played it before but haven't finished it yet. I was doing really well, and managed to beat the level 5 boss, but the first act of level 6 completely destroyed me, I lost all my continues... It's doable tho.

what's that game about? i used to see it in videogame mags all the time.
setting reminded me of original wonderboy.

Two teenage aliens from the planet Funkotron are going on a joyride. Toejam lets Earl drive even though he doesn't have a license and Earl crash lands on Earth. The aliens must navigate the planet collecting the pieces of their ship in a randomly (or not) generated while avoiding or defeating hostile earthlings.

It's a lot of fun especially in two-player.

oh thinking of the wrong game (i seen some game ads in a pre-historic era setting), but i seen this too.

I beat Streets of Rage for the first time a few days ago (Normal/No Continues), which is notable because I've never finished a BeatEmUp before (without quarter scumming). It probably helps that I beat it on easy a week before that.

I've played the second one quite a bit via Wii virtual console and on Steam, but I might pick up a Genesis copy to play through it because I want to expand that library, and that's a game I already know I enjoy.

I know its Ristar time now, but i gave Comix Zone another three runs tonight, and i can now make it to level 4 without trouble all the time. Although, ive still not been able to beat that level. Kinda coming around on the game after being a bit lukewarm on it initially. And when you learn how to tackle stuff, it actually isnt that hard either. Really like the puzzle-nature of a lot of the screens, and while the combat is pretty basic, it still holds some secrets that you need to discover. All in all a very cool game, and i think im going to try to complete it before starting Ristar.

Btw, we still need game nominations!

Can you add this list to the OP?

Not having much luck with Sonic 2.

On Friday I managed to get all seven emeralds for the first time, but died on the final boss.

I tried again today and got all the emeralds easy enough this time, but the game froze when I was about a hour in. Maybe next weekend...

I decided to hold off buying Sonic 3 until I've completed it properly, as I never did get the emeralds a as kid. Wasn't expecting it to crash though :(
