Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Actually it's very cheap, it's just a small plate with the right copyright notice that is added inside the mould and can be switched at will.

Well that makes much more sense than what I was thinking. I guess the only strange thing then is that this was made in Japan, when most other Sega 6 button pads seem to be from China or elsewhere in Asia?

I just took a look at my first party 6-button controller, and it was made in Japan.

A bit dusty still.

It's huge.

Closer image of the Genesis PAC. I've heard that the PAC can actually play MD cartridges, but not Mega CD games. I hope to confirm this later in the week, after I buy a junky cheap MD game (if they even exist).

The Reset button glows bright orange when the system is on, and sits inside a bumped-out IR sensor. I love the gold trim around it.

Over here we've got the spectacular 1/4" headphone jack, and the mysterious "Digital Memory" button. Its purpose eludes me.

The back panel, made in Japan.

The sum total of the inputs and outputs. I've read that the Optical Output is actually only for the LDs and CDs. I'm curious if when playing something like Sonic CD if the music pipes out, but the Genesis sounds don't. The Headphone jack mixes everything properly of course.

And the back of the Genesis PAC. This is where the bad stuff lives. From this close, I can clearly smell leaking capacitors. Everything I've played on it has functioned properly, but it definitely needs a recap before I use it for extended periods of time.

So cool! Really like it, thanks for the pics!

Thanks for posting those pictures, I love the look of the Laseractive, Pioneer really knew how to do the 90's premium home theater aesthetic.

Now you need to get a PAC-N10 to go with it!
(only if you have too much money laying around that you don't know what to do with)

Ugh man I'd settle for an N1. But they're all so expensive. It would be cheaper to get two RGB'd Duos...

This is so the truth. I loved their whole aesthetic.

Didn't you put a piece of Laseractive swag on Instagram recently? Or was that someone else?

Whoops, nope, it was this:

I got Batman (the one by sunsoft) over the weekend from this place called Retro Taku over the weekend while visiting Michigan. The case, manual, and cartridge cover are all in excellent condition. Unfortunately the game itself doesn't work. Looking at it closely, I can see one of the pins is a bit damaged. They don't have a return policy either. Such a waste :(

Oh! I didn't know there were any in Japan in those days.
Oh, sorry, I thought you meant Genesis games in general.

That said, I'm sure there's plenty of cheapo Japanese sports games... though they'll probably skew more toward soccer/association football and baseball than, say, American football.

Man the laser active is right up there on my list of "things I don't have the space for but will still buy if I find one in hard-off someday"
I see them all the time on yahoo auctions ranging from $150-$500 with or without game pacs, usually PC engine, occasionally MD, suspect my better half wouldn't take kindly to that monster sitting under the tv unit though.

The retro game store near me has a Laser Active for sale but they didn't even know there was a Genesis Module. It's pretty neat but very far down the list of "things I don't need but will buy anyway". If I saw one for a good price with the Genesis module I don't think I can resist but I'm not going to seek one out.

Man, the system is worthless without one of the PACs. It doesn't even have a boot up splash screen, and you need to have the generic remote to do anything other than play and pause.

Oddly, I think the PACs disable the remote entirely.

That Laseractive is really damn sexy. I love retro electronics' aesthetic like that. If I had a thousand € to drop, that thing would probably be on top of my list of "completely unnecessary things I don't need but somehow want badly".

One of the corner pins looked like it was only half the width of the others, but looking at other cartridges, I guess that's just how they're made. So I guess the pin isn't damaged.

However, the game doesn't work. I tried using WD40 with a qtip to clean it but no luck. As you can see, everything looks like it's in great condition, but the damn cartridge doesn't work. So pissed at that stupid retro store.

I have copies of The Little Mermaid for the Genesis and Tonic Trouble for the N64 that are the same way, and while Tonic Trouble I'm pretty sure has had its circuit board cracked slightly and thus probably isn't making a good connection to the ROM chips, I haven't the foggiest why Little Mermaid doesn't work.

Can you open it and use an eraser on the pins? From the picture above the pins look dirty to me (it could just be the picture tho).

Also, WD40? I haven't heard of using that. I don't think I would either.

Woahhhhh don't use WD40. It leaves a film on the contacts, and is probably making the problem worse. Use rubbing alcohol instead.

That sucks, man. Especially if the game looks like it should work.

I recently noticed that the Genesis Konami games all seem to have a half-pin on one side of the circuit board. When I first saw it on one I also thought it was damaged, but they all work fine.

I have a similar (maybe?) problem with my Virtua Racing cart. Only problem is that it does actually work, but I think the SVP chip in it is cactus. It plays music fine but whenever there's 3D stuff going on, the display is all screwy. I've checked all the pins, cleaned everything and even checked for dry solder joints, and nada.

Thankfully it's actually not that expensive to rebuy if I like. And then, I'd probably get a Japanese/US version that runs at 60Hz (not sure how the PAL version copes with being sped up).

Anyone else have any ideas?

absurd price for a cardboard box that'll probably disintegrate anyway :V
I still can't believe they were ever a thing. Thankfully never had to deal with them in Australia :D

So here's a new one... I went to play my 32X today, finally got everything hooked up, only to find that one of my power cables no longer works. I have no idea how it happened, it was working fine last time I used it, and it's only sat in a box since then. I know it's the power cable, because the one the Genesis and 32X uses are identical and I can switch them back and forth and see no power coming to the system. Any ideas? Or do I just need to spring for a new power cable?

Get a single cable that works for both (or all three if you also own a Sega CD).

I own all 3, do they make single cables that work for all 3? I thought the Sega CD ran on different values than the other two? Or do they make 3-in-1 cables, in which case I need to pick one up.

Yes, I own this one sold from the EU, but i know there is a supplyer in the us somewhere as well. Somebody here can probably chime in.

This is life changing. Wow.

It is indeed. They also produce one for the Famicom/FDS so ive been able to remove three psu's from my setup after discovering this.

Played some more Comix Zone tonight, got to what I assume is the boss of the second level, and man, this game is brutal. You dont even get a life refill when you enter a new level :( Have to check out some alternate paths on my next run.

I've always wondered if I should mention the trio power supply in the OP, it really is the Genesis owner's best friend

I wish I'd had one. I still don't understand what Sega was thinking... why couldn't they have at least given you a double adapter with the Sega CD? Dumb.

yeah damn, looks like the trio prices went up, maybe when they changed form factor? i definitely don't recall paying that much

neat that they have an NES & SNES one too, but $50 is a bit steep to save on one plug

You do actually get a life refill in the third level and I assume after every boss fight. You also get a continue. Seeing that made me have hope I might see more and maybe even the end :)

This is nice to hear. I should probably be able to get to the third level next and get some refill then. The presentation in the game is outstanding btw, some of the best of the era for sure.

Hmmm.. That's a little pricey for me. It would almost be cheaper to purchase the UK version and have it shipped here. Does anyone have alternate options, or is that the best?

Sorry I don't know of any alternatives. It is pricey, and I think that's maybe only 15 - 20 dollars more than I paid for mine when I got it hmmm 18 months or so ago. I will say though it works great, and for me, where I've got 25+ systems, switchers, and other devices plugged in, being able to cut 2 plugs out of the equation was worth it.

In case you want a tip on how to beat that boss really easily:

After you damage him a few times, he will pull himself up and recoil for a few seconds. You can quickly run underneath him, and jump over a barrel on his right side. Start pushing the barrel towards him, and let him shoot a fireball or two so the barrel catches fire. If you push the flaming barrel into him, the flames will repeatedly damage him until he dies. You have to make sure the barrel is on fire before you push it into him, otherwise he will just destroy it and you'll have to fight him the hard way!
