I got the SEGA Genesis Entertainment Center all set up!

Here it is with the lid on. I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't cover the cartridges.

The Genesis fits pretty comfortably. But it sits just a tad too low to plug in the power supply and A/V cable. So I take it out and set it on the lid when it's in use. Kind of a hassle, but do-able.

The box says it will hold 16 cartridges, but I'm able to fit 18.

All-in-all, it's not a bad little organizer. It's not perfect, but it does make moving the system from room to room a whole lot easier. I'm happy with it. =)

When it comes to the Model 1 does it matter if you get the one that has HD labeled or not and I wonder if there's a difference in sound between HD/non-HD.

Sorry, I don't know too much about the Model 1 besides having the best sound of all the models.

The best thing to look out for is the ext port or the blank space where it was removed in the back. If you pick oune up and you see either of those, thats the one to get. Thats the best way to avoid the shit revision.

Some versions of the non-HD model 1 Genesis are identical in the sound department to the HD model 1s, but others have the bad chip like the model 2. There are ways of telling the difference by looking at the ports on the back of the Genesis.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll keep that in mind when I get a Model 1.

Also, Thunder Force IV's soundtrack is epic, I want to get this game someday!!!

Technosoft goes hard in the sound department. I love Elemental Master's soundtrack too. Their conversion of Naxat's Devil Crash pinball also sneaks in some original Technosoft beats, lol.

Wasn't aware that was PAL-only. Huh. Live and learn.

It has some pretty nice music, though. I mean, hilariously overpoweringly loud, but some of its tracks are good in spite of that.

My bad - the cart release was PAL only, in the US you had to be a Sega Channel subscriber to get it. It's quite good isn't it? Not as bad as i was expecting at all. Not sure why you have to choose between music OR sound effects though. I'm not playing on a Commodore 64.

^ It's a great game, but it's not that good! lol

Actually, I appreciate Golden Axe even more after having read "The Making of..." article in the latest Retro Gamer. I wonder how reception would have been had it been the original Genesis pack-in instead of Altered Beast (assuming it could have been produced in time)?

It was actually the game that convinced me to get a Genny over an NES. At the time everyone had an NES and I was really late to the console game being a Commodore 64 kid. Loved the Genesis graphics and there was a buy two and get one free offer iirc and I was already set on Forgotten Worlds (loved that game on my friend's Amiga) and Revenge of Shinobi(?) and I think Golden Axe was one of the games you could get free. The reviews said it was pretty much arcade perfect so I went to my local arcade at the mall and planned to play for a quarter - 20 minutes later I was down a dollar and hooked. Bought my Genny the next day.

That looks really bad!

I don't really like the look of crossing MD1 With Mega CD2 either.

The best looking add-on builds are:

MD1+MC1+Karaoke unit
MD2+MC2+32x

Mega Drive 1 and Mega CD 1 together is the favourite though, god damn it looks so early ninties cool:

The Karaoke unit isn't even attached though. It just kinda hangs out next to it. =P

I love stories like that!

I remember one time I had this girl over to my house who liked to play arcade games, with one of her favorites being Altered Beast. When we played it on my Genesis, she was like, "This is exactly like the arcade!" Of course, it wasn't exactly, but it was close enough for a casual fan like herself.

Man, the ones with the CD look terrible. And the Model 2 + 32X combo just looks bizarre.

As I'll mention every time a Model 2 Genesis on a Model 1 Sega CD comes up, IIRC there's a gap left underneath the Genesis with this setup; eventually, gravity will take its toll and start bending some of the contacts used to make the connection work. It's not a recommended combination.

Not having a Model 1 Sega CD on hand, I've honestly never tried it.

Console wars has instilled a new love of the genesis in me. I never had one as a kid, I asked for one but got s game gear instead and foolishly kept it instead of returning it.

Any hidden gems that aren't the usual sonic, thunder force, etc,

holy balls that looks gorgeous man
please use a better camera & post up again, really wanna see details!

I plan to, this was really quick snapshots. I plan to do a 2nd set of lights, and hopefully adjust where my systems are currently. I have to make do with the small amount of room available to me.

Hey guys, I have a model 2 coaxial (NTSC ATV) cable Sega Genesis but I live in the EU (Germany).

Trying to figure out the best way to get a good clean picture to the TV while maintaining 60hz. What cables or conversion boxes should I perhaps be looking into?

I got a genesis originally while I was shortly in the states.

Scart cable and depending on your TV tech of choice either a scart to YUV converter or an xrgb scanliner/upscaler.

Composite is bad but it is particularly horrible on the genny. S-video I believe requires a mod, but RGB scart is natively available as is and is better S-vid.

So it's been one year since I made this thread. I've been buying up a LOT of video games within the past year or so. The scope of this has been bigger than I originally intended it to, but I think I'm at least 90%-95% of where I want to be with my retro video game collection.

So here's what I got for the Genesis/CD/32x. About half of the Genesis games in my collection are holdovers from when I was a kid, but all of the CD and 32x games were bought within the past year. All of the Genesis games are CIB, every single one includes the manual.

Click here for the full album.

The two Sega CD games you can't see are Road Avenger and Sewer Shark. They are manual and disc only, don't have the original box with those.

So a quick search for an X'Eye compatible AC adapter took me to some information saying that using a low-powered adapter could damage it.

I've been using my PC-Engine Duo-R AC adapter, it's 9v/1000mA.

The X'Eye adapter was 9.5v/1500mA.

Now I need a new adapter one way or the other (ya know, I can't hot swap them forever, especially now that my game room is starting to resemble a real setup), but I was curious if anybody here knew how valid this claim was. And while I'm out looking for a comparable adapter, how far from the original values can I go? Aparently a Sega CDX adapter will work as well, but that's probably just as common as an X'eye one.

Voltage usually has to be the same, but every internal circuitry, when well made, allows a percentage of variation (because our energy distribution system is not very good). So, if a circuit needs 9v, it'll work on 9.5v or 8.5v, because we can't guarantee that the nation-wide energy distribution system will always be stable - and those are fictional numbers. There's no hard rule on how much variation a circuit allows.

Amperage, on the other hand, is much simpler: Technically, electronic devices will only use as much amperage as they need. So, if a console requires 1000mA to work and the PSU provides 1500mA, no worries. The console will only use 1000mA.

If I were you, i'd look for a proper voltage adapter, while you can go up in amperage without any problem. Using lower PSUs on a device will, eventually, lead to problems, as there won't be enough energy to run the device properly, but I doubt any actual damage could be done.

That's a pretty rad collection Zealous!

In an unrelated post, i really, REALLY wanna like Landstalker. I will still likely finish just because i dig the characters/simple story, but fuck do i really hate the isometric platforming in this game.

So, i have a reproduction game, and a couple cart only games i'm ready to part with, and i figured i would be down to give them away on here, but i'd want it to be fun.

My idea: Upload a medley of Sega Genesis/32X/CD songs to my youtube channel, post the link here, disable comments, and you wonderful fans can see how many you can get right. Whoever gets the most gets the nice repro care and their choice of 2 of the 4 loose cart games. 2nd and 3rd will get choice of the last 2.

I will say, all 4 carts are actually solid, not crap titles. If there is enough interest just to have fun and do something cool, i'll make the mix and post the name of the games i'd be giving away. But i wanna see if you guys would be down without knowing the stakes first. Just for a bit of fun!

RGB cable would be your best bet

Thanks for the replies guys.
Any idea, of course you guys do I imagine, where I can find a good RGB genesis cable (that is to replace the Antenna TV cable)? Online retailers always make me nervous.

Retrogamingcables on ebay has the Euro scart cables you'll need for a CRT setup. If you are using an xrgb mini, you want the JP21 scart cable which I'm not sure if they sell as well.

Wasn't there like a anti-static metal plate to put underneath, that hopefully fixes this?

I don't know if they're anti-static plates, but yeah. There's this plate that you screw onto the bottom of the M1 Genesis with hooks on it that slide into grooves on the M2 SCD. Holds it nice and tight in place.

Unless he means that the platform of the M2 SCD is meant to accommodate the smaller footprint of the M2 Genesis. I've noticed that a lot of people don't realize that it came with an extra piece that attached to the side of the platform to extend it to match the footprint of the M1.

I had an M1 Genesis and got an M2 SCD for Xmas one year. I remember my mother telling me that the sales guy at the store tried to get her to buy an M2 Genny because it wouldn't fit and it would ruin both systems. She didn't buy it. (Unrelated but that piece of trash hardly worked 6 months after I got it; I'd have to give the CDs a head start by spinning them before turning it on.)

I said Model 2 Genesis on Model 1 Sega CD, dude, not Model 1 Genesis on Model 2 Sega CD. I own a Model 1 Genesis on a Model 2 Sega CD, I'm well aware that combo works.

So I ordered a mega amp from a guy named helder that cleans up the audio on later genesis models. I went with unfiltered ym3438, and I think it sounds amazing. Of course YouTube won't do it justice, but man it sounds so much more clear in person. Not only that but it fixed the problem I was having with an audio hum using rgb.

This was supposed to just be a quick sample showing off the audio but I ended up 1cc'Inc it. Not that streets of rage 2 is hard, but check it out if you want.

Is the unfiltered YM3438 the "System C-2" version? Or is that different still? I'd like to try one of these mods, but it gets a bit confusing with the different versions.
