Nice review. I always found the Genesis version kind of pointless, but I didn't know you could use two controllers. That redeems it a tiny bit. Still ugly, though, and especially pointless since the SNES version is unquestionably better in every regard.
I don't think you mentioned it, but it was either a launch or super early XBLA game as well, arcade perfect and with online play. Too bad it had a shitty achievement to beat the game without continuing (fuck you!) and, even if you did it with the invincibility trick, the achievement was bugged anyway. Lovely.
Also, why don't you pan the camera up a little instead of slouching into the frame? And I hate, hate, hate when people sound out SSSSNESSSS. Ew.
Anyone here played Magical Tarurūto-kun? Impressions? I should receive in the next few days, and it looks kinda fun from what I've seen.
Well it arrived today and it's pretty much brand new, which is nice! I guess it's a bit obscure or not very well known on gaf? It's a fun and colourful platformer, a bit unusual for the Mega Drive but appreciated nonetheless. The difficulty is obviously aimed at the younger crowd but it's pleasing to play.
It's another Game Freak joint, but IMO they didn't get platformers right until Drill Dozer.
Gorgeous art and graphics though!
The school bag with the face is kinda a cool mechanic. You have a little stubby wand you can whack things with (not very effective) or you can use it to pick up inanimate objects (like a schoolbag) which then become alive and you can throw them, sometimes through multiple enemies.
The graphics are definitely what attracted me though; there don't seem to be many games with this look on the MD (compared to say, the SNES).
Never heard of the game myself. Its not as crazy expensive as Pulseman is it?
Nope not at all, unless you're specifically looking for the JP version. Like most late-life JP Mega Drive games it's pretty scarce. NA Genesis copies on the other hand cheap and plentiful, just be aware most are loose cart as it was a cardboard case release.
Whats the North American name?
I think he thought you meant Ristar. That game never came stateside.
What Genesis/Mega Drive controllers do you guys mainly use, gamepads or joysticks? Or does it depend on the type of game?
I pretty much always use the first party 6-button controller

I've been thinking of switching to a stick, especially for shmups/fighters/action games. I didn't know there were build differences between the SEGA JPN and US 3-button stick. Does the same hold true for the 6-button version?I find the original Sega 3 button stuff to be excellent and for beat em ups and shmups, I use one of these:
A classic but the JP one is best (microswitches):

Also, is there a difference in build quality between US 3-button and US 6-button stick? I don't have the 3-button, but it looks more sturdy.

Just picked up a 32x with all cables for $40.00. From what i'm reading, this seems like a respectable price.
What kind of range should I be looking at for Knuckles Chaotix? It looks like one could easily overpay for it.
Just make sure you test the thing out before you go and buy any games for it. I have a long and passionate history of abusive relations with the 32x.lets just say the failure rate on those is high.Just picked up a 32x with all cables for $40.00. Same here.Had my 32x for years, never a problem. *shrug*
those with 32x problems: have you taken them apart & cleaned the contact points? common problem, got mine working perfect that way
Too Many Games was a bit of a let down this past weekend. Admission fee was ridiculously raised from last year, less dealers, the 'arcade' was nonexistant, and the prices they wanted were just overall crazy stupid. Selling poor condition games for 'mint' prices was one thing, but the selection was just terrible. I didn't find squat between any of the systems I was there for and when I did the prices were laughable.
On the good side my brother got a Genesis 2/Sega CD Model 2 combo for $75, which was great and I sold my copy of M.U.S.H.A that I've owned for over 20 years for $220.
I also walked away with a System 2/3 power adapter that I needed for my Nomad...

Works great, even if it looks a bit janky on my 46 inch plasma. The smaller flat screen up in the bedroom looks decent however.
Picture of a Sega Genesis with a Demon's Souls poster in the background? You're officially my new GAF best friend. ^_^
Guys.. I'm falling more in love with boxed Genesis games as my life goes on..
I'm literally salivating looking at some of these games in boxes, on ebay, that I used to own, but foolishly traded in to the corporate pawnshops.
Do I have a problem?
My god, they're beautiful.

If you had said JP Mega Drive games, I would be with you. I'm not quite sure how the mostly horrid art of Genesis games can do anything but make one lose their vision.
