Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Nice review. I always found the Genesis version kind of pointless, but I didn't know you could use two controllers. That redeems it a tiny bit. Still ugly, though, and especially pointless since the SNES version is unquestionably better in every regard.

I don't think you mentioned it, but it was either a launch or super early XBLA game as well, arcade perfect and with online play. Too bad it had a shitty achievement to beat the game without continuing (fuck you!) and, even if you did it with the invincibility trick, the achievement was bugged anyway. Lovely.

Also, why don't you pan the camera up a little instead of slouching into the frame? And I hate, hate, hate when people sound out SSSSNESSSS. Ew.

Call me crazy, but I think the point of the Genesis version is that it plays on the Genesis. As for "SNES" or "Sness", who cares.

So thats where I remember "I'll buy that for a dollar".

Should we vote on upcoming contest games / an order of genre, or just randomly pick?

Anyone here played Magical Tarurūto-kun? Impressions? I should receive in the next few days, and it looks kinda fun from what I've seen.

Well it arrived today and it's pretty much brand new, which is nice! I guess it's a bit obscure or not very well known on gaf? It's a fun and colourful platformer, a bit unusual for the Mega Drive but appreciated nonetheless. The difficulty is obviously aimed at the younger crowd but it's pleasing to play.

It's another Game Freak joint, but IMO they didn't get platformers right until Drill Dozer.
Gorgeous art and graphics though!

The school bag with the face is kinda a cool mechanic. You have a little stubby wand you can whack things with (not very effective) or you can use it to pick up inanimate objects (like a schoolbag) which then become alive and you can throw them, sometimes through multiple enemies.

The graphics are definitely what attracted me though; there don't seem to be many games with this look on the MD (compared to say, the SNES).

It's kinda pricey now, but Game Freak's Pulseman is similarly gorgeous. Graphically, Ristar is another stunner.

Never heard of the game myself. Its not as crazy expensive as Pulseman is it?

Nope not at all, unless you're specifically looking for the JP version. Like most late-life JP Mega Drive games it's pretty scarce. NA Genesis copies on the other hand cheap and plentiful, just be aware most are loose cart as it was a cardboard case release.

I just looked up Pulseman and Ristar on eBay and... no, not by a long shot. There's one on eBay for $50 USD with free shipping. I got my copy for under $10 though because I got it locally and Sega stuff doesn't fetch crazy high prices here like Nintendo stuff does, particularly not Japanese stuff.

Whats the North American name?

The Genesis Taruruuto-kun game is decent fun but easy, yeah. There's also a Game Gear game from Sega, which is an easy shmup. The two Famicom (NES) Taruruuto-kun platformers and the SNES one, though... those are very tough games! The NES (Famicom) ones are "NES Hard" indeed. Huge contrast from the Sega ones in challenge. The NES ones look pretty nice for the system, too. Plus it has saving! But with such a hard game you need it. I'm pretty sure teh SNES one saves as well. It's a lot like the NES games, it seems -- platformer where you use your tongue as your main weapon, Mario 3 inspired clearly but with the tongue mechanic. Very different kind of game from the Sega games, though those two are different too -- the GG game is a shmup, after all!

Good shit. One that I really enjoy and has been in my collection for years. I recently picked up Doraemon which is another game aimed at the kiddies but it looks like fun - we shall see when my work allows me time to play it.

What Genesis/Mega Drive controllers do you guys mainly use, gamepads or joysticks? Or does it depend on the type of game?

I find the original Sega 3 button stuff to be excellent and for beat em ups and shmups, I use one of these:

A classic but the JP one is best (microswitches):

Wallet rapingly expensive (but awesome):

A recent pick up, haven't had time to try, but looks pretty solid (same stick also available in a much cooler black theme for the SFC):

I've been thinking of switching to a stick, especially for shmups/fighters/action games. I didn't know there were build differences between the SEGA JPN and US 3-button stick. Does the same hold true for the 6-button version?

Also, is there a difference in build quality between US 3-button and US 6-button stick? I don't have the 3-button, but it looks more sturdy.

Both of the JP sticks are better than their US counterparts since they're both microswitched. My understanding is that the 6 button sticks are less solid than the 3 button stick but I have no personal knowledge so take that with a grain of salt.

I had no idea the JP ones were microstiched, I assumed the same rubber contact deal North America got.

Putting one on my "shit i got to buy" list.

Damn, missed your post about this game earlier. I have a copy. I too think it's pretty neat. Decent platformer but really pretty graphics.

Now is time to the 68000 heart on fire!!

Welcome to the first of hopefully many, NeoGAF weekly retro contests! Kicking things off with a bang, we're starting with one of the top notch shoot em ups for the system:
Thunder Force IV aka Lightening Force!

jbg0rnXLlPhBKd.jpg

And now for the rules of the contest:

  • All options are left at default settings (which is easy since the game drops you right into the action after start).
  • The "order of attack" is as follows - Strite, Ruin, Daser, and then Air Raid. After that progression is determined automatically as usual.
  • Single credit only, no continues! Play as far as possible until you die, then run the timer down and enter your initials (first 3 letters of your GAF name) on the high score ranking screen.
  • While this screen is displayed, take a picture of the screen with your user name written and attached to your TV / Monitor / display of choice. Only an actual picture of the entire display and name attached, taken by a camera/phone/etc. will count. No emulator screenshots!
  • Make sure to type your score in the post as well.
  • You can post as many times as you want, but of course your highest score before the deadline will be the one that counts.
  • No cheat devices, save states, or turbo controllers of any kind.
  • The length of the contest will be from Saturday, 6/28 until Saturday 7/5 at 12am PST. You can post as many entries as you want during the contest, but of course, only the highest score you posted will count towards winning.

Well that was intense! I dunno who said Lightening Force was one of the easier of the series, but if you're rusty...whoo...some areas look impossible.

Just picked up a 32x with all cables for $40.00. From what i'm reading, this seems like a respectable price.

What kind of range should I be looking at for Knuckles Chaotix? It looks like one could easily overpay for it.

$40 ain't bad! Chaotix tends to run between 20-30 cart only, CIB 40-60 to my knowledge.

I'd tell you to definitely snag a cart if you run across it for 20, I really enjoy that game. Anything above 30 is probably overpaying.

Just make sure you test the thing out before you go and buy any games for it. I have a long and passionate history of abusive relations with the 32x.lets just say the failure rate on those is high.

And that's not even taking into account the SECOND unit I purchased AND THAT FUCKER WON'T WORK EITHER. GODDAMNIT.

those with 32x problems: have you taken them apart & cleaned the contact points? common problem, got mine working perfect that way

Just want to take a moment and sing the praises of this weird remake controller I found by a brand called hyperkin.

Edit: had no idea this was the same company that made the retron consoles, :lol I just figured it was another one of those weird knock off, fake Chinese brands that change brand names every couple of months.

I've been fiddling around with it and my original 6 button doesn't seem to make a connection properly with the extension cable I picked up. I like having a little bit of extra cord length to work with and this new controller works with it. Only problem with it was the stiffness of the d-pad and how it seemed to have difficulty registering an up/right diagonal input.

I cracked the thing open and found an idiotic design flaw. Basically there's a pair of very long, stiff rubber prongs protruding from the springy d-pad contact layer. They're used to help keep the rubber layer in place without shifting around inside the controller. These prongs were right next to the up and right contact points and basically any time you'd try to depress either of these points you'd be trying to depress a stiff rubber tube. It gave the pad extra spring, reduced response and if you tried to press both inputs at the same time the prongs would prevent both inputs from registering properly and diagonals would be near impossible.

I trimmed off the prongs as best I could, lubed the joint inside the d-pad with some silicone lubricant and now it's amazing. Very simple fix for a cheap controller and it works better than some of the other 6 button pads I have laying around. All it needs now is some break in time to wear down some resistance.

Anyway amazon sells these things for around 12 bucks: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HM3QAWK/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Dirt cheap for a controller that, after a simple mod feels nearly identical to the genius article. Or at least close enough. It's tough to say since I have several Genesis controllers laying around and they all feel radically different from each other anyway.

Too Many Games was a bit of a let down this past weekend. Admission fee was ridiculously raised from last year, less dealers, the 'arcade' was nonexistant, and the prices they wanted were just overall crazy stupid. Selling poor condition games for 'mint' prices was one thing, but the selection was just terrible. I didn't find squat between any of the systems I was there for and when I did the prices were laughable.

On the good side my brother got a Genesis 2/Sega CD Model 2 combo for $75, which was great and I sold my copy of M.U.S.H.A that I've owned for over 20 years for $220.

I also walked away with a System 2/3 power adapter that I needed for my Nomad...

Works great, even if it looks a bit janky on my 46 inch plasma. The smaller flat screen up in the bedroom looks decent however.

I just dream of a universal saturn controller. A wireless one with selctable recievers for different consoles. Of course build quality would have to be just like the original. Such a thing is too good for such an awful world... I'd settle for saturn adapters for every system.

TooManyGames was completely unorganized. I managed to walk out with a nice haul of Saturn imports, and a few decent deals from Sunday when i could make some low offers (Finally got Alissa Dragoon for 20 bucks complete in decent shape, excited to play that) but overall, as far as collection stuff goes, a big bust. Prices were mostly ridiculous, and the con seemed to have really poor planning.

Guys.. I'm falling more in love with boxed Genesis games as my life goes on..

I'm literally salivating looking at some of these games in boxes, on ebay, that I used to own, but foolishly traded in to the corporate pawnshops.

Do I have a problem?

My god, they're beautiful.

If you do, I do too. I was holding a copy of Truxton in a store recently, and it had no box and no manual. It wasn't even a bad deal.

But I just couldn't pull the trigger without the clamshell.

If you had said JP Mega Drive games, I would be with you. I'm not quite sure how the mostly horrid art of Genesis games can do anything but make one lose their vision.

I would happily own that box and tape a little text bubble onto the skeleton who is clearly recoiling in terror:

"Whoa, now THAT'S a vagina."
