Ahh yes the great debate.

I have to go Genesis all the way. The Sega Genesis is still the best console ever released as far as I'm concerned. My favorite game ever(Chrono Trigger) may be on the SNES, but the collective Genesis line-up is just too amazing for me to deny. Despite the fact that the line-ups wouldn't even be close if not for Squaresoft and Super Metroid, the fact that SNES gamers got sweat in their MK gives Genesis the win.

Genesis has Herzog Zwei, Phantasy Star II, Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III.

Super Nintendo doesn't. Genesis wins! :D

True. The Sony sound chip in the SNES was amazing at the time!

Mortal Kombat was tough to swallow. But MK2 came and retribution for the SNESers!
 
Love 'em both, but Genesis wins.

I love the countless shooters, beat-em-ups, and platformers on that little guy.

SNES has great shooters, beat-em-ups, and platformers too...but the ones on Genesis were better and more varied.

There are three areas where the SNES trumps the Genny. Racing games(Mario kart and F-Zero specifically), Fighting games, and Nintendo games.

Everything else is alllll Genesis for me.

Yeah there was. It came late in it's life cycle if I remember correctly. I think one came bundled with some game from EA and I had another one too. Both broke not to soon after though.

EA's multi-tap came with General Chaos but plugged into both ports. Sega's four-way play thing came out a bit later but I don't know if it was a pack in with any game... also it only plugged into one port so eight player games were possible. Pretty sure only a couple of sports games used this, and I could also be completely off.

How the hell do you break a four player adapter? I wouldn't trust you with a paperweight.
 
Its obvious the Nintendo SNES easily cockslaped the Sega Genesis... to death. Still, the Genesis/MegaDrive was truly a golden gaming platform, with countless gaming gems under its belt.
 
I'll throw a vote in for SNES, although i have and like both. For me, Super Metroid, the FF games, Chrono Trigger, ActRaiser, amongst others put it over the top. Plus the Sony sound chip kicked the ass of Genesis' craptacular sound.

I never owned a Genesis, but I had a GameGear and I've heard that the Genny was just a much better home version of that.
Still, the SNES stands as my favorite system ever and it truly has a second-to-none library.

Mario RPG was also the best looking title from that era.

I am amazed at all those Genesis supporters here.

I figured we'd all shriveled up and died. Back in the 16-bit days it was neck and neck. Nowadays, Nintendo is still popular, but Sega....well, we love Sega.

Wow...I vaguely remember General Chaos and think that's where one of my 4 player adapters came from. What the heck was that game about??

I think both 4 player adapters just wouldn't "seat" well in the joystick plugs. I believe you had to restart the game if it disconnected. They broke in a similar manner to my Genesis needing (and still needs) a cartridge wedged under the power supply connection so it doesn't wiggle out.
 
heh.. now THAT'S how you do a console war.. probably less than 33% of their software at their peaks was cross platform (and most of the cross platform shit was EA Sports or licensed crap). CLEARLY different methodologies. the slow splodding processor of the SNES with it's 512 simultaneous colors or the race horse that was the genesis with only 64 colors.

For my money, I loved and still own both. Choosing just one is like having to choose between the Victoria Secret model on page 13 or the one on page 16. Why choose if you can have both at the same time?

The genesis was awesome and it had a great library, but it was no SNES.

NES > Master System
SNES > Genesis
PS2 > GC, Xbox

I left out N64 and PS1 because that one was really close.
 
Well I never had an SNES and never played the games on it until the N64 era, so my vote has to goto my Genesis since I've had so many more memories with it. :)

both systems are must owns. picking just one means you are missing half the great software from the 16-bit era. (no TG-16 means you are still missing at least a couple dozen other must have titles from the era)

I meant had it all in terms of genres.
 
I wonder how many generations gotta go by before this debate gets stupid.

SNES owned the genesis for me. Still played Genesis for the Sega games and EA sports, but SNES had better 3rd party stuff in most genres. But it was still a close race...probably the closes console race ever. I doubt that will EVER happen again.
